In what was probably three minutes, but seemed to Colin to be an hour, the doctor came running in. A nurse ran behind him, tying his scrubs and pulling up his surgical mask. A second nurse followed with a prep and delivery tray. “I’m sorry, but you’ll need to leave now,” the nurse whispered to Colin. “Honey. I’m sorry. I have to go now,” Colin said, and just then Leah began a rapid succession of exhalations, and released her death grip. “No time to prep, the baby’s coming,” the doctor said just as Colin slipped out the door. The doctor quickly threw the sheet up over to Leah’s hips, and reached between her knees. Leah screamed one more time, and then fell back onto the bed, panting to catch her breath.
