Chapter 4 - "Spicy!"

1140 Words
Caleb The pain was excruciating, but I refused to give in to it! The past three days had been the toughest I ever had to endure. Finding out that runt was my mate set off a chain of events beyond belief. My father finally declared me alpha after my decision, which at least was a good thing. I had been eighteen for months, and it took a rejection of my future mate for him to see that I would be capable of taking care of our pack! I couldn’t stand the sight of her and, thankfully, my parents remembered that alpha Jeremy was looking for a mate at the last alpha meeting. It was the perfect solution in my mind. I could make some money out of the worst decision the moon goddess had ever made, and I would be rid of the memory of her! Jeremy I heard her cry, and it took everything I had not to check on the poor girl. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what she must be going through. It was a huge relief when Caleb called and told me he had someone I could consider as my Luna, since my pack wasn’t happy about my lifestyle. I had a couple of mistresses in the pack, and one or two had children. My children. Sadly, the pack didn’t accept those as possible future heirs. Now they might not have a choice. The only female I could find as a possible mate was far too young! My reputation had preceded me and nobody wanted me to mate their precious daughters. I looked at the door that led to Riley’s room and shook my head. Nope! There was no way I could do that. She was a child! If her pack had strange practices, I wasn’t going to follow their damn example. I walked into my office and poured a drink just as Mike walked in. “What about me?” He laughed, and I grabbed a glass to pour him one as he flopped down on my couch. “So?” Mike raised a brow when I handed him a glass. “I’ve given Anna instructions to teach her the ropes. I am not bedding that girl!” I took a long sip before sighing deeply. “Dude, I thought you were going to strangle Caleb!” Mike burst out laughing and I rolled my eyes. He was right. I really wanted to strangle the young alpha the second I realized what he had done. “Do you think it was her family?” Mike frowned and I nodded. “Was it just me or did it seem as if they were relieved to be rid of her?” I frowned as Mike nodded. “Maybe there is something wrong with her? Maybe she is crazy or something?” He shrugged and I shook my head. That wasn’t it. There was more to this story, and I was going to find out what it was. Caleb told me she was his destined mate, but he rejected her. He also told me that she was an omega from one of their respected omega families and that her brothers had worked themselves up the ranks to gamma. Now that I have thought about it, it all sounded far too good to be true, and I should probably have done more research before taking the girl on. “What’s done is done.” I sighed deeply as Mike laughed at me before emptying his glass. “I’m off to check in on the border patrol. Do you feel like joining me?” He laughed and I nodded. A run would do me good. Riley Anna wasn’t joking when she said they got up early in the mornings. Thankfully, I wasn’t a very heavy sleeper and I heard her coming down the passage. My door ripped open and she glared at me. I was dressed in my uniform and had my hair tied back in a neat bun. I took her example to heart and thought if I went the extra mile, I might just win her over. She looked a little deflated the moment she saw me and whipped around. I took it to mean I should follow her, and I was right. We spent the better part of the morning cleaning an impeccable home. It was almost as if dust wasn’t allowed inside the house! Every surface was spotless. When lunchtime rolled around, I prepared myself to speak to Jeremy, but he wasn’t there. I took the chance to join Anna at her table and from the looks of the other women around the table it quickly became clear I was intruding. Nobody said anything. That was the thing. People had been talking behind my back all my life and I had kind of gotten used to it. So, they didn’t have to say anything. After lunch, Anna showed me Jeremy’s room and told me how he wanted it cleaned. His room was exactly what I expected it to be. There was no mistaking that a male lived there. His room oozed masculinity, and I was relieved about that fact. It meant he didn’t allow any of his numerous girlfriends to make themselves at home. That sounded awful, but it meant I wouldn’t have to deal with a spoiled woman who just made a mess for the sake of it and left it for me to clean up. I didn’t change for dinner and decided to stay in my uniform. Jeremy joined us for dinner and as soon as he waved for me to come over, I knew I had to say something. “Thank you, but I think I should sit with the rest of the omegas.” I regretted my words instantly. I didn’t exactly ask him. I told him! “That is where you are wrong. You might be an omega, but you are mine. That makes you third highest ranked until I find my mate. Then you will be fourth and so on and so forth after we have children.” His eyes flashed, but it happened so fast that I couldn’t exactly place what it was. “Your place is here by my side.” He patted the chair beside him and I blinked at him. “Anna is higher ranked than me, and she doesn’t sit with you.” I glared at him. “Spicy!” The man beside him commented, looking amused, but he swallowed his laughter quickly when Jeremy growled softly. “I suggest that you take your proper seat, Riley. You are making everyone wait.” Jeremy glared at me and as I turned around, I realized that nobody had started eating. Everyone was waiting for Jeremy, who was waiting for me to take my dang seat!
