Wisdom quickly came with age. Or it could just have been that I stopped listening to the people around me and started finding my own way. Sadly, by the time I woke up, Riley was mated to Jeremy and, from the sound of it, she was happy. She had moved on. I couldn’t claim her anymore. I made peace with it. Everyone was pressuring me to get a mate, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
There was nothing wrong with any of the young ladies I was introduced to. They just weren’t Riley. I kept promising that I would find a mate, but in the back of my mind, I knew I would die alone. It was my punishment for the way I treated her. I didn’t care that I wouldn’t have an heir. I felt I didn’t deserve one. I didn’t want our bloodline to continue if that was the way we treated people.
