"Wh-what do you want?" I whispered, trying to contain the shuddering of my legs. He was radiating an extremely dangerous aura, despite his apparent calmness. I knew he was not going to let my actions go.
He was probably going to kill me.
"To give you a chance," Ace replied, tilting his head to the side. "You said you'd punch me again if you got the chance. Why don't you try doing it right now?" He raised an eyebrow.
I blinked up at him, as my breath hitched.
"Come on," he said, tightly grabbing my wrist and bringing it close to his face. "Punch me, Duckling," he said through gritted teeth, now scowling at me.
"Let go of me!" I yelled, struggling to get my wrist free from his hold.
"Shhh!" He scolded again, pushing my clenched my fist behind my back, as he stepped even closer to me. "What's wrong now?" He asked, using his free hand to grab my chin, as tears pricked my vision. "Afraid, are we?" He whispered, glaring down at me.
I gulped, closing my eyes shut. "Let go of me," I repeated softly, sniffing. And he obliged. He took a step back, and I immediately tried to rush out, but the door was locked. I pulled at the handle with all my might, before realizing that he had locked it from the inside, using the latch bolt lock on the top of the door. Which was, of course, too high for me to reach. I gulped, and got on my tiptoes, but it was of no use. My fingers barely grazed against it. I turned and glanced at Ace, who was leaning against the sink, silently watching me with his arms crossed over his chest. After trying a few times more, I sighed and gave up, biting my lip.
"You done?" Ace asked, walking up to me. I tightly backed away into the door, trying to create as much space between us as I could. He placed his hand beside my head, as he bent down to my eye level again. "Now that you're done flapping your little wings, I'll get to the point. You know I was genuinely planning to let you go. Forgive you, for what you did. I was impressed by your courage, Ava, truly. All I asked, was for a simple apology. It would have saved you so much trouble."
"I'm sorry!" I cried, wiping away the tear that had escaped. "I'm sorry for punching you, I'm sorry for saying all that. Please just let me go," I begged. I'd deal with his s**t later. But I didn't want to be alone with him. Not in a washroom. He could do anything he wanted, and I had no way out. If begging could save me, I would beg. It was better than getting hurt or assaulted.
He shook his head, chuckling in amusement. "That's the thing, babe, that didn't come from your heart. And now you're only saying this because you wanna get out of here, because you're afraid of what I'll do to you." He completely closed the space between us, stepping even closer to me, making me turn my face away from him. "You're afraid of being alone with me, in a closed space like this," he whispered huskily, using his free hand to move my hair away from my face. I flinched at his touch, but didn't have the courage to push his hand away again, knowing there was no way out for me. Knowing that no one would help me even if I screamed, as I was the target of the Wolves. Their prey. "And you're just too late now. The damage has already been done," he said, pulling away slightly.
"So-so what will you do now?" I squeaked out, looking up at him.
"Now, I'll take my revenge, obviously," he shrugged. "And I'll take my time with it. Slowly and gradually, Ava, I'm going to strip you," he said softly, making my eyes widen in fear.
"What?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
"Of your ego," he added, the ghost of a smirk on his face. "Of your self-respect, and lastly, of your courage. By the end of it, you'll come crying to me, begging me to ask the Principal to expell you. And when I break you, that's when my revenge will be complete," he said, his eyes threatening. "This, Ava," he took my wrist, making me clench it, "I'll never forget this. And I'll make sure neither will you."
I gulped, shivering, as tears pricked my vision again. He suddenly pulled me away from the door, making me let out a small scream. He let go of my hand and unlocked the door, casually walking out of the girl's washroom, leaving me alone. Two girls entered immediately after he left, and gasps escaped their lips as soon as they saw me inside.
"Oh my God," one of them whispered. "What happened here?" She smirked, looking me up and down to get a hint of anything.
A small cry escaped my lips and I pushed past them, tears finally falling from my eyes. I ran all the way back to my dorm room, wiping away my tears, and hiding my face so no one would see me cry.
"Ava," Tanisha said, standing up from the bed as soon as I entered. I ignored her and rushed inside the washroom, shutting and locking the door behind me as I broke down. My breath was still caught in my throat, and my head began to pound from the stress. I wiped away my tears and washed my face, struggling to calm myself down.
"You're okay, you're okay," I repeated, sniffing, as I took deep breaths. "He-he didn't do anything. He didn't... You're fine. He was just... He was just trying to scare you. Don't give him that satisfaction. He can't win, you-you can't let him win, Ava," I told myself, looking in the mirror. I nodded at myself, taking another deep breath, as my shivering stopped now. "You're okay," I said softly. "You've dealt with jerks before. You can do it again."
Once I felt I was presentable again, I stepped out of the washroom, only to find a teary Tanisha right outside.
"I'm so sorry, Ava. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you the truth," she cried, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I should've warned you, I was their target. This is all my-"
"Calm down, Tanisha," I said, shaking my head. I placed my hands on her shoulders, stepping closer to her. "None of this was your fault, okay?" I reassured. "And stop crying. You're fine."
"I am, but what about you?" She asked, sniffing.
"I'm okay," I replied. "I punched Ace in the face."
Her eyes widened, mouth parting in shock.
"You... You did what?" She asked softly.
"You heard me," I shrugged, walking over to my bed and sitting down. She followed after me immediately, still staring at me in disbelief.
"You're going to be expelled, Ava! Why would you do that?" She asked incredulously.
"I won't," I sighed, looking away from her. "Ace has promised me he'll keep me here and make my life hell, until I beg him to get me expelled."
"Just like they did to Kelly," Tanisha said, a deep frown on her face.
"Kelly?"
"The friend I told you about."
"But I thought you told me your story."
"The fire part was me. The rest they did to Kelly, for standing up for me. I had spilt shake on Priya, and she had insulted me. She got pretty... Personal, while doing so. So Kelly had defended me," Tanisha explained. "She too, got a little aggressive, and said some pretty colorful words to Priya. We have been best friends since seven years, so she's pretty protective of me. The Wolves then started to target her, made it really difficult for her to study here. So she eventually left herself, even though she didn't want to leave me alone. They left her with no choice."
I gulped, biting my lip, as my heart beat paced again.
"Did they... Um, harm her?" I asked, unsure if I wanted to know the answer.
"They tripped her multiple times. She once broke her glasses, and she'd get scratches, but never anything too harsh. It was the mental torment that bothered her more. She'd get calls at night from unknown numbers, threatening her. The girls would trap her in the washroom, and they once locked her in the janitor's closet. That was the last straw for her. She couldn't take it anymore," Tanisha said softly, her gaze downcast.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, placing a hand on her shoulder. "When did the fire thing happened?"
"That was on a bonfire night. There was a party, and um, I heard Darren and Ace speaking about it. They were saying something around the words of 'giving the nerd a barbecue', and I figured she'd be in trouble. The students had rounded her up, and Darren was making a video. Priya had this weird, lighter type thing, but with a larger range. She was waving it around, and I tried to intervene. The lighter caught my hair... And... Um..." Her voice broke at the end, and I took her hands in mine.
"It's okay, you don't have to tell me the rest," I said softly. "It's a good thing you're not their target anymore," I added, chuckling.
She looked up at me with guilty eyes. "You should never have stood up for me."
"Maybe, but I already did. And you know what? If I had known all of this in the first place, I would still take a stand for you. I'd do it for anyone. Because that's just how my parents raised me," I said with determination. "These people, they think they're so tough, I'm pretty sure they've never been loved by their parents. That's what makes them so bitter, so angry."
"If you're planning to solve this by showing them love, I-"
"I'm not," I laughed. "I know that s**t doesn't work. But I'm not going down without a fight, that's for certain. Let's see what they have in store for me," I smiled, even as my heart was pacing in fear. Tanisha smiled back, but I could see it in her eyes. She was scared for me. She had seen it all happening before, and she knew it was about to happen again.
But this time, the target was not going to give up so easily. Ava Clayton was not a quitter, and I would fight till the last moment. The Wolves were going to regret laying their eyes on me.
Hopefully.
