"Please, please," I whispered, closing my eyes shut now. A second later, I heard Ace knock on the door in a certain rhythm, and a moment later, I heard it unlock. I opened my teary eyes, to see him smirk at me, before stepping out of the washroom, taking Medusa with him. I heaved a sigh of relief, and wiped away my tears, taking deep breaths to calm myself down. My legs were still trembling, but I managed to step outside the washroom, where there was a huge group of students waiting for me. Hoots, whistles and laughter broke out in the hall, as a few people started to take pictures and videos.
I looked around, as a huge lump formed in my throat, and more tears rolled down my cheeks.
"Aw, the little duckling is crying," Sapphire mocked, walking up to me. "What happened darling? Lost your swagger, and your courage?" She tried to touch my face, but I slapped her hand away, stepping away from her. The rest of the Wolves soon joined her, except Ace, who was nowhere to be seen.
"Doesn't she look gross, guys?" Darren asked, and everyone hooted.
I gulped and wiped my tears, and then my nose, shifting my gaze to the floor.
"Scared of a little snake?" Aisha said softly, raising an eyebrow at me. "You seemed braver than that."
"Wanna say anything about animals now?" Priya asked, pushing me back my shoulder. I stepped back, a sob escaping my lips, as I refused to meet anyone's eye. The Wolves kept walking towards me, until they had me backed away into the washroom door.
"How's our duckling doing?" Ace's voice echoed through the corridor, and everyone made way for him, the crowd parting like the Red Sea. The Wolves too, stepped aside, as if on cue, and Ace walked up to me, in his terrifying glory. I quickly scanned him for any signs of the Viper, but it was gone now. Fortunately. "You're actually crying like a toddler," Ace mocked, bending down to my eye level.
I wiped my tears away with the back of my hands, whilst silently looking him in the eye.
"What's wrong, babygirl?" He asked, extending his hand towards my face, making me push it away. "Don't have any witty responses? You're not gonna call me Satan?" He asked.
"Nah," Sapphire said, feigning a look of pity. "The little girl is too busy bawling."
"Your nose is running, Clayton, you should wipe it," Darren said, offering me a tissue.
"Darren," Ace said, clicking his tongue. "That's our thing. I offer her the tissue, not you." Darren shrugged and handed it to Ace, who extended it towards me. "Here. Wipe your tears," he smiled.
I slapped his hand away, before trying to leave the scene, but he grabbed my arm and pulled me back, making me clench my jaw. He then grabbed my chin, making me gasp, as he tilted it upwards. I was forced to look him in the eye, and a scowl took over my features as I tried to get free of his hold. But every struggle made him tighten his grip, to the point it began to hurt.
When I stopped struggling, he loosened his grip.
"Good girl," he said softly, so only I heard it. He proceeded to wipe my tears away, followed my by runny nose, whilst I stood there, glaring daggers at him. He then took my hand, and placed the tissue on my palm, before closing my fist. "There are a lot more tears to come, Ava. Suit yourself."
He then turned around to leave, and the rest of the Wolves followed him. Darren winked at me before leaving, making me clench my jaw as the anger began to rise in my chest. I glanced down at the tissue Ace had handed me, before closing my fist again. The students started to disperse, talking amongst themselves, and I gulped, taking in a deep breath to muster up the courage.
There was no way he was having the last word.
And so I went after him, and grabbed his jacket from behind, turning him around. He looked taken aback by my action at first, after which it was replaced by a hard, warning look.
"That was it?" I said loudly, glaring up at him, as I wiped away the rest of my tears. All the students around us stopped, their attention back to us.
"Just back off," Aisha warned me, but I ignored her.
"Was that the maximum you could do?" I asked, my tone louder than before. I was still shaking, but whether it was the previous fear that caused it, or the new rage, I was not sure.
"There she goes again," I heard Darren mumble, as he huffed and crossed his arms.
"What happened? Answer me, Ace Argent," I said.
Ace clenched his jaw, slowly shaking his head at me. "You're making the same mistake again, Ava."
"No," I let out a chuckle. "This isn't a mistake, Ace. The last one was, because I actually stooped to your level. I punched you square in the face, made you bleed, just like you guys do. But I'm not gonna do that again, because I'm better than that. I'm better than you guys, who hurt others to get over their own pain."
"Just shut the hell up!" Sapphire yelled, pushing me back by my shoulder as she stepped in front of him. "You think, you can come into our school, say whatever you want, and just walk away? We'll finish you, Ava Clayton. You'll regret the day you moved to this town."
"You done?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at her. "Or are there any other empty threats still left?"
"Empty threats?" Priya asked, before laughing as she clapped loudly. "Two minutes ago, you were sobbing like a little baby, locked inside the washroom. Begging us, to let you out. And now you're saying our threats are empty?"
"Yes, they are. Because I'm still standing in front of you, as brave as before," I replied, crossing my arms over my chest. "Besides, stop interfering. This is between me, and your jerk of an Alpha. Your leader, who you like to follow around like little puppies, just because he's the son of the Mayor."
"You know nothing about us," Darren spoke up now, walking up to me. He too was pretty tall, and his build was more muscular than Ace's. His proximity to me was enough to intimidate me, but I was done being afraid.
"And I don't want to," I replied, looking him in the eye. "I'm sure there's only darkness and pain in your lives. That's why you're so bitter."
"That's enough," Aisha said now, glaring daggers at me. "You do not want to comment on our personal lives, Ava. Especially when you don't know anything about us."
"So what? What do you expect me to do?" I asked, walking past Sapphire, Darren and Aisha, back to my original spot. "I should stand here and quietly endure whatever you throw at me? You think you're the only ones with the right to speak up? You're wrong, Aisha. And as far as your personal lives are concerned, you should have thought about that before poking your noses in my private life. Before trying to ruin my career, my school life, my relationships with my friends."
I then looked at Ace again, whose jaw was clenched, fists were balled. "And you. Son of the Mayor. If you were really a man, you would try someone your own size. But you're a coward. Which is why you go around befriending every rich student in this school, and target the ones who have less money than you. Or girls. Who you think cannot fight against you, who are intimidated by your false masculinity. It's not your fault, you know? I've seen the way girls stare at you here, the way they're either so afraid of you, or can't wait to throw themselves at you. But I'm not one of them, Ace Argent. I hope that you will remember my punch your entire life, as a reminder, that there was one girl out there who did not give a s**t about your good looks, your money, or your power. Now crawl back to your father and ask him for a new shiny car. It'll help with the ego boost, and when you make the tyres dirty by your stupid stunts, you can clean them yourself. It'll help you realize how tough it must be for all your workers, who you probably keep bossing around all day." I took his hand, and placed my tissue in it, proceeding to close his fist.
By now, Ace was seething with anger, and I could see the devil in his eye. The veins of his neck looked like they were about to burst, and his Adam's apple bobbed up and down as his eyes narrowed at me. His jaw was clenched tightly, his fists balled, and he looked like he would lash out any second.
"You bloody b***h!" Priya yelled, turning me around by my shoulder. I winced as her long, painted nails dug into my skin, possibly drawing blood. I pushed her hand away, glaring at her. "I'll show you," she seethed, raising her hand to slap me, but I caught hold of it before she could hit me. I twisted her hand behind her back, making her groan.
"I have had enough!" I snapped. "Keep your hands to yourself, or you'll be the one getting the next punch."
"That's it!" Ace yelled, making me flinch. He stormed up to us, tightly grabbing my wrist, making me let go of Priya.
"You ugly piece of s**t!" Priya yelled, mad with anger. She tried to come at me again, and I backed away, but Ace stepped in between us.
"That's enough, Priya," he said softly, placing his free hand on her shoulder. His other hand was still holding onto mine, even despite my efforts to get it free.
"Ace, I'm gonna kill her. Move out of the way," Priya said through gritted teeth, glaring at me.
"No, you won't," Ace replied. "She's right. This is between her, and I. I'm the one she punched. And I don't need anyone's help to show her her place. So calm down, and back off. I have this covered."
"But Ace-" Sapphire tried, but she was silenced with one look Ace directed at her. She shifted her gaze to the floor, her jaw clenched.
"Alright Ace," Aisha said, her eyes slightly narrowed, as she stared at him, and then at me. "She's all yours now." She gently took Priya's hand, pulling her away from us.
"Great," Darren said, walking up to Ace and looking him in the eye. "You can have her, but you better teach her a lesson soon. Because she tried to hurt Priya, and I'm not gonna have it."
I gulped, realizing the situation I had put myself in. I had to do something quick, or this would get worse.
"Let go of me!" I snapped, yanking my hand out of Ace's grip. "Stay away from me," I warned, pointing my finger at him, before I stormed away from the scene. The truth was, I was afraid of what was going to happen next. I knew I had pushed them too far, and that consequences would be severe. But I had no choice. Someone had to show them their place, someone had to stand up against them.
Just as I turned the corner, someone grabbed my arm from behind, and dragged me away, making me let out a small scream. Before I knew it, I was being pushed into the janitor's closet, and I stared with wide eyes as Ace stepped in as well, slamming the door shut and locking it. We were surrounded by darkness except for a few rays of light, and I backed away from him, my heart hammering in my chest.
Ace stepped forward and pushed me up against the wall, making me gasp, as he caught hold of my wrists and pinned them above my head using one of his hands. I tried to scream, but he covered my mouth with his other hand, glaring daggers at me. He closed the space between us. I whimpered, my breath hitching, as I struggled to get free. But he was too strong. I had no option but to stare at him with my widened eyes, while trying my best to get free.
"Laying your hand on my best friend was not a good move, Clayton. You punched me and I didn't do anything, but you don't get to touch my friends," Ace said, his voice dangerously low as he scowled at me. I had never seen him look so angry before, and I gulped, letting out a shaky breath. "I have been lenient, I've been going too easy on you. But now it's time for you to understand, what Ace Argent can get away with. What I can do, and how easily I can do it." He removed his hand from my mouth, but I made no sounds.
I was terrified of him.
"Good girl," he whispered through gritted teeth. "If you make a single sound, I will make sure you're never able to speak again. Do you understand?" He practically growled at me.
A tear left my eye, as I trembled against him, before nodding my head.
"Good." He said, before leaning in.
