Chapter 18Sandy ran into the circle, not sparing Albert or Jaecar so much as a glance, and sank down on his knees next to Ric. “Ric?” A wind swept through the cavern, blowing out all the candles, and leaving them in complete darkness. Sandy listened for sounds, ready to attack to protect Ric. “Thaddeus?” “I’m on it.” His voice sounded closer than it had been before, and soon a soft glow came from a torch on the wall. Another was lit, and another. “I think it’s best if we don’t light the candles in the circle. I don’t think anything can happen, but better safe than sorry. Can everyone see well enough?” Leo made an affirmative sound, and Sandy nodded. Ric slowly returned to human shape, painfully slowly. Tears trickled out of the corner of his eyes, and he hissed through clenched teeth.
