CHAPTER NINE

Clair

I could already hear Karly’s scolding and long advice even before telling her everything. She’s going to say ‘Can’t you see he is best shot at love, why can’t you just listen to me for once?’

I don’t think I’m ready for her lecturing but I have to be ready by force so I can tell her else she’s going to start suspecting.

Here goes nothing.

“Ahem,” I cleared my throat nervously and told her everything.

Her look after telling her everything scared me, she looked like she would eat me alive if she could.

“Clair! You what?! You hung up on him? What do you still want to think about? How will you know him if you don’t go out with him and find out more about him?”

“Hmm… I…”

“I’m sTiLl TaLkInG!” She said, interrupting me. “Don’t interrupt me again! I’m not done talking to you!” She said, looking directly into my eyes and I nodded obediently.

Karly has the characteristics of a mother, I don’t know if she thinks I’m her child because she sometimes acts like I’m her little daughter who should follow her instructions and do the right thing.

I think she forgets most times that I’m her best friend!

She gives good advice like a mother would give to her child, I sometimes listen to her advice, and other times I disagree with her and that is when she unleashes her scolding and lecturing just like today.

While I’m like her older sister who is protective and caring.

I act like her older sister most time even without knowing it, the whim to protect her comes naturally.

I feel like it’s my priority to keep her safe from all the hurdles and vileness of the world.

It’s what probably makes our bond stronger and unbreakable, we are the family we never had and that’s why I trust her so much.

“Why do you look absentminded? Listen to me Clair, you have to get to know Blaze better, he might be the one to guide and protect your fragile and precious heart.” She said in a calm voice. It’s more scary when Karly talks in a calm tone when she is anything but calm.

“Can’t you see he is the best shot at love? Why can’t you just listen to me for once?” She added.

“Déjà vu,” I said silently.

“Did you say something?” She asked

“No, I didn’t” I replied almost immediately.

“So… do you still want to think about it?” She asked raising an eyebrow. The question threw me into a dilemma, I couldn’t decide if I should say yes or no.

If I say yes, then I will get another scolding and this time it will be longer and worse.

If I say no, she will tell me to call Blaze immediately and choose tomorrow as the perfect day for the date.

“Umm… Karly?”

“Yes? What will it be?” She asked with a straight face.

“I… I didn’t reject Blaze nor did I tell him no, I just told him I WILL THINK ABOUT IT. So it doesn’t necessarily mean I refuse the idea of going with him on a date.” I explained calmly and carefully.

“So does that mean you accept to go on a date with him? I’m using your phone to call him now and tell him that you accepted and you chose tomorrow as the perfect day to go on a date.” She said excitedly grabbing my phone instantly.

“No, no, no, I didn’t say so,” I said, slowly taking the phone from her before she called Blaze.

“Isn’t that what you meant?”

“Karly, I know you want the best for me but you know how hard it is for me to trust a person. I just met Blaze, I need to take time to observe him before I show any interest in knowing him. I know you want to ask if I no longer feel attracted to him like I said yesterday. The ask is no, I still find him very attractive and compelling but I have to ignore these feelings and know who he is before I accept my attraction for him. I’m not ready to go on dates with him, I can message him or call him and have a little chat with him until when I’m sure I want to get to know him. I know you understand what I mean.” I explained.

“Aww, come here baby. I’m sorry for pushing you too hard without listening to you first. I ignored how you really feel and only thought of how Blaze feels. I’m so sorry my love, don’t worry I won’t push you again if you don’t want to. I will support you no matter the decision you make, just follow your heart, and while following your heart also read signs and listen to your instinct in case your heart ignores the signs.” She said, pulling closer into a comforting and supporting hug. I was happy with what she said and for the assuring hug.

Her hug always relieves me of worries and stress, I held onto her tightly and whispered into her ears, “Thank you, Karly, for understanding me and don’t you dare apologize again, you are scaring me.” I said, and we laughed happily.

“Ok Clair, I love you!”

“I love you too!” I replied still clinging to her.

“Quick reminder, tomorrow is your interview, hope you didn’t forget?” She asked, breaking the embrace to look at my face. She looked at me suspiciously.

“You forgot didn’t you?” She asked, she knew the answer.

“I did, but I have you here to remind me. Don’t I?” I asked smiling.

“Of course you do, that’s the reason don’t keep things in your head because you have me to always remind you!” She said, rolling her eyes.

“You got me there,” I said, laughing. She smiled softly.

“Oops! The food is getting cold! Come on Clair let’s eat, I know you must be hungry.”

“I am starving, you must have been starving at work today, come on let me feed you.”

“I was surrounded by snacks and drink all day, so…”

“Fair point but I’ll feed you,”

“How about I feed you?”

“No, I suggested feeding you first so I will do the feeding while you do the eating.”

“Wait, how about you feed me and I will feed you too?”

“Fine by me,” I said. After we finished eating we sat on the sofa to watch a movie.

“Clair, how about you send Blaze a message to ask how his doing and you know, have a little chat with him,” Karly suggested.

“I don’t think he would like that, he hasn’t said anything since I hung up on him,” I said, unsure of what to do.

“That’s because he might think you want to be left alone after all your actions suggest you don’t want to talk to him. He feels he’s disturbing you if he sends you a message.” Karly said,

“He might be looking at his phone right now contemplating whether to send you a text or not.” She added.

“Ok… I will send him a text to apologize for hanging up.” I said, hesitating.

“Send it now,”

“Fine!”

“Hi Blaze I’m sorry for hanging up, I was having a lot going on in my head.”

“And… sent!” I said, looking at Karly who nodded in encouragement.

“He is typing Karly, I think you were right.”

“About what?”

“You may be right when you said he could be looking at his wanting to send a text.”

“I told ya”

“Wait he replied!” I said, shushing Karly.

“I understand, you can take all the time you want but just know I’m always a text or a call away if you need me.

“OK Blaze thank you for understanding, I’m sorry I sounded too harsh.”

“You didn’t sound harsh Clair, stop thinking you did.”

We were having a little chat and it quickly escalated into a discussion, I enjoyed talking to him. Karly was watching the movie alone, she kept smiling at me strangely. After chatting for hours, I remembered I had to go to bed early to wake up early the next morning and prepare for my interview.

“I just remembered I have an interview tomorrow, I gotta go. Good night Blaze, talk to you tomorrow.” I typed and sent it to him.

“Good night firecracker.” He replied

“Karly, you didn’t remind me to sleep early for tomorrow’s interview. I was so carried away chatting with Blaze, that I almost forgot about it.” I said, waiting for Karly to reply but she didn’t. I turned to face her, she was sleeping peacefully. I smiled and woke her.

“Karly I was talking to you, I didn’t know you fell asleep. You must be so tired, come sleep on the bed it’s more comfortable.” I said, helping her up from the sofa.

“What were you telling me?” She asked.

“Don’t worry about it, it’s late, let’s go to bed,” I said, she nodded. I took her to bed and tucked her in, I lay close to her, and we fell asleep after some time.
