  WREN   The sun was not as harsh as when we first arrived but its rays toasted the back of my neck. As I walked, I kicked stones and dragged my feet. Maybe I did act like a child sometimes but it wasn’t my fault. My father had protected me from most of my responsibilities while growing up and shielded me from criticism. As an only child, nothing was beyond my reach.   I had not really given the future a thought. Somehow, I hoped my father would live forever, be the Alpha for another hundred years and I would be free to waste away in my youth.
