CHAPTER 4 - FOR THE FIRST TIME

VENUS I ran as fast as I could, Drew trying to catch up with me. It was at times like that that I missed Bly the most. If she wasn’t muted, I could shift and run into the forest until I felt better. Refusing to slow down, I kept going until I saw my house. Nobody was home, the silence too loud for me to bear. I went into my mother’s garden and sat among the tulips, struggling to catch my breath. I had kissed a man. It could not be real, I told myself but my lips still tasted of him so it had to be real. I pressed my fingers against my lips and closed my eyes, the memory of the kiss enough for me. The man on the other hand was something extraordinary. When I had turned to face him that first time, his gorgeous eyes had pierced through my soul. Their colour was strange, a kind of purple that I had never seen before. I had seen golden wolf eyes, green, blue, red but never amethyst. He was magnificent, his shoulders like twin marble pillars and his arms had drawn me into his embrace. Looking at his full lips, I would have never guessed that they would be so soft and inviting. The taste of mint on his tongue was probably from the toothpaste he used because he had been coming from the bathroom. His midnight dark hair framed his sinfully attractive face and fell roughly without order, wet and sexy. How could the Goddess create such a deadly handsome man? I would have given an eye to hear him say my name in that rough, husky voice of his. If he had suggested making love to me, I might have agreed and he was a total stranger. No man had ever commanded such reckless thoughts in me. Ansley was the passionate one, the romantic while my love life started and ended in a romance novel. Who was he and why was he hiding in a suite instead of attending the wedding? His friend’s excuse about him being ill was obviously a lie but why tell a lie to someone whom he thought was a maid? Did he actually know who I was? Sweat beads dotted my forehead as I thought of the possibility of him knowing who I was. The coincidence of us running into each other was suddenly suspicious, as if he had been waiting in the corner all along. In my anxiety, I uprooted a baby tulip and tried burying it back when I realized my error. If the man I kissed went about looking for me, it would not be long before Father heard of it. Then he would know that I had disobeyed his orders and attended the wedding. My throat went dry and the sun shone down on me without mercy. Father had locked me up in my room for five years when my wolf had turned out to be a beast. I could only wonder what he would do to me if he discovered my recent offense. At fifteen, to impress him, I told him about my interest to join the pack’s defenders. I had always admired my father’s strength and tried to win his approval. I was physically strong and my wolf was tough looking. However, Father warned me never to bring up the topic. He was a general in the old Alpha’s army and a strict father. Most especially, he was harder on me because I had little or nothing to offer as his daughter. There was only one way to escape his anger. I had to run away before the truth was revealed but where? ******************* RHYS My wolf, Czar, was restless, causing me to pace the room, my fingers raking my hair madly. I had only managed to put on my night shirt before he started troubling me. All I could see was red streaks, the hair colour of the seductress who had stumbled into my suite and turned my wolf inside out. He snapped at me, wanting me to shift and go after her. “Be quiet,” I warned him, leaning against the wall for support. I had retied the towel around my waist when my erection had subsided but I was experiencing some mixed feelings. I was happy to finally know how it felt like to grow hard, the painful pleasure of arousal and I was angry because she had run away before I had the time to experiment further. Many potions and special concoctions had not worked but a simple kiss from a maid had my engines fired and ready to go. My wolf whined when I ignored it and resumed its restless roaming. Go after her, he begged and I wanted to, Goddess knew. The way she melted in my arms at my touch was so hot and submissive. I wanted that everyday of the year and I would chain her to my bedside if I ever found her. Occupied in my dangerous thoughts, I was not aware of Mars’ return until he closed the door behind him. I stood in the dark but I could hear his footsteps and also smell him. He stopped by the bed and threw his watch on the drawer top. “So what did you do while I was gone? I hope you didn’t miss me too much,” he teased but I was not in the mood for a joke. My head was splitting from my wolf’s stubborn insistence and I needed a truckload of aspirin. When I didn’t respond, he turned on the lights and stared back at my bloodshot eyes. “What happened to you?” The jokes were over and he was concerned about my welfare. “I don’t know how to explain this but for the first time in my life, I...I had an erection. It was...” I closed my eyes, finishing my sentence in my mind. It was wonderful. Mars stood still for a second before he punched his fist through the air in celebration. “How? Who? When? Tell me everything,” he said, jumping around in excitement. “I guess I should thank you for sending the girl to my suite. She and I...kissed and it just happened.” I tried to keep my voice cool despite how much I wanted to howl in victory. Just then, Mars went silent and avoided my eyes. He knew something and he was hiding it from me. “Mars, spill your guts right now! Don’t give me that look; I am not a fool,” I glared at his feigned innocence. He put the bed between us, thinking it would save him if I became angry. “Well, Alpha...I...um...maybe it wasn’t the girl who got you aroused. It was...er..I kind of added your potion to the wine she brought with her. I’m thinking it finally worked.” “You did what?” He had gone too far, from nagging me to drink them to spiking my drink. He apologized immediately but he would not go unpunished. At the moment, I had more pressing issues. I pondered on his words, wondering how true they could be. “But they did not work with my mistresses. Why now and with her?” He shrugged and began undoing the buttons on his sleeve. “Perhaps because of the change of environment.” It was possible that he was right. If it was proven, then it was back to the potions again. “I have to test this theory,” I suggested, stroking my chin. “But how?” “The old Alpha and the newly weds are here to see you. They may have the answer to your problem.”
