Chapter 9
Cody
We don't know what to do with the rest of the day so we decide to walk down to the When we come inside, only my dad is here.
"Cody", my dad says happily. "Elle".
"Hey dad", I say.
"Hi Mr. Williams", Elle says.
She walks behind the counter and puts an apron around her waist. She's not working inside the kitchen. They told me that she takes care of orders and the counter. And that is really helpful. My dad and I can focus on only the baking part. My mother takes care of the economy, she has employees for the restaurant, that’s her part of the business, but Elle counts the cashier at the end of the day.
Apparently, it has worked out really well. Before I used to run between the counter and the kitchen. It was really stressful, I had to be at two places at once. My brothers helped of course, but now they have full-time jobs, and can't help as much here. On the weekends they told me, they're here, but we only have the bakery opened half days on Saturdays, and on Sundays it's closed.
As I put on my apron the door opens. The bakery isn't open yet, so it has to be someone we know.
I turn around and see the twins walk inside. They’re very beautiful. Don't take that the wrong way. I'm in love with Elle, the twins are her little sisters and they’re only sixteen. But there's no doubt of the fact that they’re beautiful young girls, with their blonde hair, blue eyes, and charming dimples. They still have those cute braids. Everyone loves them. I get this brotherly protective instinct turned on whenever they’re here or I meet them. I mean, boys really drool all over them when they walk by and the glances they give them aren't very nice to watch. Boys can be d***s, I know that for a fact.
I've known the twins since before they were born, and that's why I'm acting like a protective brother sometimes. Elle and I met in kindergarten when we were two. The twins were born when we were four. Even though we were only four, I clearly remember Elle and me, talking to Mrs. Olsen’s stomach when she was pregnant with the twins. We really thought that they could hear us talk to her, that's what Mrs. Olsen told us anyway, but I don't know, kids believe in everything.
I always told Elle that her sisters would be really beautiful when they grow up, but I said that as a brother so Elle knew exactly what I meant. She told me that I had to help her beat up every guy who tried anything on them. Of course, I agreed.
But back then when she said that, she thought that she would see the twins grow up right here. She didn't know that a horrible car accident would kill her father and make her mother resign in life and become depressed, leaving Elle to take care of her sisters. And she didn't know that her mother would recover and accuse her of taking care of the girls the wrong way and force them to move with her to out of town, leaving Elle behind here in the city. Elle has never been alone, she has always had my family and her friends. But she’s always felt alone and empty without her sisters. I feel so sorry for the three of them
"Hey girls", I say, smiling.
"Hey Cody", Lila says, hugging me.
I hug her back. I feel love flow in my veins when I hug her. Brotherly love. I want to protect her. I feel my instincts wake to life.
“How are you?” Liv asks and hugs me. I hug her back with the same feelings.
“I’m good”, I say.
"Hey! What about me?! I'm your sister", Elle shouts from behind the counter.
"We love you too sis", Liv says walking up to Elle with Lila.
"You better", Elle says, laughing. "Because I love you, girls, with all my heart".
They giggles. They know how much we care about them, and they especially know how much Elle loves them. No one can be mistaken for that.
I just smile. Seeing them together feels so good, they should be able to always meet. I wish they could live here.
“Did you have something on your minds?” I ask.
“Not really, we’re just not that excited to go back home”, Lila sighs and Liv nods.
"Is mom mean to you?" Elle asks, quickly starting to sound angry.
I walk up to her and wrap my arms around her waist, trying to calm her down a bit. It works.
"No but she's mean to you Elle, I mean do you know how many times of the day we have to listen to her criticize you?" Liv says and I feel my anger boil inside of me. "She's not doing anything else but criticize you, and we hate her for that, you're the best sister in the world and you took care of us when she didn't".
"Girls..." Elle begins, but Lila interrupts her.
"So we were thinking... If maybe we could... You know, live with you guys", she says, looking pleading at both of us. "We know that you sleep in the same bed and Elle said there are two bedrooms, and Cody we won't be in the way, just please think about this, we would do anything to not go back to her".
I just look at them. I’m stunned by this, to be honest, I didn’t think they would ask this.
"Yeah it's fine with me", Elle says. She looks up at me and has a pleading look in her eyes.
I smile warmly at the girls.
"I can't see why not", I say them her, holding out my arms to all the three girls.
"Yey!" They exclaim and jump onto us.
I wrap my arms around my three girls. I would do anything to protect these girls. Anything.
"We love you, Cody, thank you so much, you're the best!" Liv says happily.
I laugh.
"I love you three girls so much,", I say kissing the twins on the cheek and Elle on the lips.
I understand that the girls don’t want to live with their mother, but it’s devastating to me that they’ve been having a hard time with her.
I don’t know what the future holds right now, but I know that I will do whatever I can to help Elle with the twins. They’re not children, they can take care of themselves, but they still need care and love. That’s what we will give them.
