The next day after school had gotten out I was approached by Mike who wanted to walk me to my car. He told me that he heard from my sister during one of the classes they shared that both her and I were looking for jobs. His offer was for us to work at his parents store since they recently cut two teenagers who had been stealing merchandise from the back and selling it.
I was excited for the offer but sad about the reason it came about.
When I got to my car I stuck my bag in the back seat and turned to face him. I rose my eyesbrows slighty as I saw him trying to look smug as he leaned against the hood of my car.
"So my parents already approved of you and Bella since you both had amazing references." he said as he stuck his hands in his pockets.
"No way, who?"
"Me...." I rose my pursed my lips. "And your father of course." he added as he grabbed nervously at the back of his neck.
"What time?" I asked as I leaned into the back to fish my purse from my back pack.
"One of the open spots is 4-7, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The other is 6-9, same days."
I nodded my head as I began rifling through my purse to find my keys.
"What position is it?"
Mike shrugged his shoulders. "There are two, cashier and inventory."
I frowned slightly, clutching the keys in my hand. "I've only ever stocked shelves. I have no experience at all."
Mike leaned in towards me and grazed my cheek lightly with the back of his hand. "Cheer up, I have alot of experience. I can temporarily switch shifts with Andrew and train you. You will learn fast, I promise."
I gave him a half smile. "I don't know, it is alot of trouble and I am sure you can find someone better."
"Well your sister says you need a job so I will not let you refuse." He gave my shoulder my shoulder a reassuring squeeze and then turned and walked off in the direction of his car. "I will call you with more details this weekend." he called over his shoulder.
"Thank you!" I called back as I opened my car door and got in.
I stuck the key in my ignition and started the car before I backed out of my parking spot. As I began driving through the parking lot I heard someone shouting my name. I glanced in my rearview mirror and then quickly slammed on my breaks when I saw my sister running after me.
I couldn't believe I almost forgot her.
Panting, she came up to the passenger side and tossed her backpack in the back with mine before she climbed in.
"Sorry, I got caught up and almost forgot you." I admitted
My sister shook her head at me. "It's my fault, I er, I was trying to find someone." she said, tersely.
"Who?" I asked curiously.
Bella quickly dropped my eye contact as she tucked her hair behind her ear. "It's no one." She said trying to be nonchalant.
This was Bella's response to trying to hide something.
"Tell me."
Bella bit her lip. "In one of my classes I sit by Edward and yesterday he was just acting so weird. He gave me this look," Bella frowned as she turned her head to look at me. "He just seemed so angry and I have this feeling it was because of me."
A horn honked impatiently behind me and I glanced in the rearview mirror to see who it was. Of course it was no one I personally knew so I shrugged it off since there was enough room to go around me. But there, just barely in my mirrors view was Edward who was clearly staring right at us.
"Speaking of Edward." I muttered, forehead creasing slightly as I scrunched my eyebrows together.
Bella turned around to look over her shoulder, only to quickly turn back around. She covered her face as she sank lower into the seat. "Can we please go, now?" She begged.
The car behind us honked again, only this time he didn't take his hand off the horn.
"Go." Bella said.
"No, the asshole behind us can either wait or go around me."
The horn was still wailing and my nerves were beginning to rise.
"Just go Sophia, please."
I glanced in my rearview mirror at the passenger in the car behind me. Now that I looked more closely I saw it was a female, blonde hair maybe. From the way her lips moved I could tell she was swearing.
Then she stuck her head out the window. "Get the f**k out of the way or I will ram your car!"
"Oh my god, Sophia please go." Bella said yet again.
I turned to look over my shoulder just as the girl got out of her car. She stalked bitterly to the side of my car and halted at the drivers side, her hands rested on her hips.
"Did you not hear what I said?" She snapped. "I have a nail appointment to fix my broken nail and you are going to make me late."
Before she could even finish I began laughing. This girl did not know who she was messing with.
"Is something funny to you?" she snapped as she leaned into my car.
My laughter halted immeadiately, a frown taking its place. I looked down at her hands which were clutching my door for support and then slowly rose my gaze to look at her face which was inches from mine. I could smell her breath which reminded me of the green peppermint candies I ate around Christmas.
"I didn't think so. Now. Move. Your. Car."
I turned to look at Bella who had a pleading expression on her face. She, unlike me, didn't enjoy ruffling feathers every now and then.
"Sophia, move." She murmered.
"Yeah Sophia, move."
I rolled my eyes. "Maybe I like this spot."
In the next half second one of the cars that had been in the long line behind me drove past us. Followed by another, then another. Soon the entire line had went around us. They each slowed down just long enough to see what the hold up was, before continuing on out of the parking lot.
I pointed my thumb at one of the last cars. "Now only if you could be that smart. I mean seriously, a friggan tank could fit around me." I spoke, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
She glared right at me, her face still inches from mine.
"Can you please get out of my face?" I asked polietly. "You are unsettling me."
"Really? Well maybe you should've moved your car."
"Please get out of my face." I repeated again.
"I will be out of your face when you move your car."
I white-knuckled the steering wheel as I clenched my jaw angrily. One thing I hated the most was people in my space.
"Something must be wrong since you haven't moved yet." She said as she inched her face closer.
Without a word I grabbed her hair, which sat on the top of her head in a bun, and yanked it down causing her face to hit my car door. Releasing my fist full of hair she hunched over, clutching her face. Then I quickly shoved my door open, hitting her in the head and knocking her to the ground.
Removing my seat belt I got out of the car and knelt over her. "Something must be wrong since you haven't moved yet, bitch."
"Sophia, lets go!" Bella shouted.
I glanced over my shoulder and saw the fear in her eyes as she looked at me. That look alone reminded me of a moment in our childhood, but I quickly pushed it to the back of my mind.
Turning back I looked at the girl, curled up and clutching her bruised face. Her eyes were locked on me in fear. "Word of the wise, next time don't mess with someone if you don't know them because you might get your ass kicked by another crazy girl, like myself." I taunted before I stood up and got back in the car.
Taking the day old energy drink I left in the center console I emptied it onto her head and then threw the can at her before speeding off.
The entire car ride Bella was scrunched up against the passenger door as if she was prepared to escape. She wasn't too obvious about it but I knew I had scared her.
"I'm sorry Bella." I sighed as I pulled into the drive way.
"It's fine." She said quickly.
II knew it wasn't fine by just looking at her. Her face was splotched pink, obviously from the anxiety I had put her through.
"Oh and I would appreaciate it if you didn't mention this to dad." I said as she opened the car door.
She glanced at me and then quickly looked away before she started getting out of the car. I followed. I knew before we entered the house that our father wasn't home since his cruiser wasn't here. So for another few hours it was just Bella and I at the house.
This was going to be strange.
