Break

The next morning the alarm clock went off, waking me from my sleep. When I opened my eyes the memories of last night replayed in my mind. The feeling of someone watching me, seeing someone at the foot of Bella's bed. It replayed in a quick flash. "Time to get up." Bella said to me. I pushed myself into a sitting position at the end of the bed and then got to my feet. I turned around and glanced at the clock only to see there was thirty minutes before we had to leave for school. "s**t! s**t!" I shouted as I ran across the room and into the hall. "What's wrong?" Bella called from the bathroom as she began running the shower. "The time, I don't have enough time!" I shouted back, taking the stairs two at a time. On the third step from the bottom I stepped the wrong way and twisted my ankle. I let out a shriek of pain as I tumbled to the floor on the landing. Tears swelled up in my eyes as a searing pain filled my ankle. I curled up into a fetal position, holding my ankle as it continued to hurt. Great... This was a perfect start to my day. Not only did I forget that my sister didn't get up as early as I did, so I didn't have enough time to get ready. But I messed up my ankle, who knows how bad. Would I be able to wear my heels with my ankle feeling like this? I pushed myself up off the floor, making sure to keep the weight off my injured ankle, and limped down the hall to my bedroom. I looked at my clock and saw I now had 25 minutes to get ready for school. I wasn't going to have enough time to get ready and I wasn't going to go to school looking like this. I had two choices, I could either be late or call in sick. I hobbled over to my bed and climb up before I laid down. I would call in sick later or have Bella take a note for me. It felt like I had barely closed my eyes when my sister came into my room and shook me awake. "Sophia, you need to get up, we are going to be late for school." She said to me. I yawned. "I'm not going to school today so you are on your own." "What, why not?" I moved my ankle, causing pain to shoot through it again. "Ouch!" I winced, tears glisting my eyes. "I can't go to school, I messed up my ankle as I came down the stairs. I can't move it." "Do you want me to take you to the doctors?" I shook my head. "Nope.... no doctors needed." Bella lifted the blanket from my ankle and her hand went straight to her mouth. "You need to get that looked at." I didn't want to look at it but it had to be bad from the look on my sisters face. "Just get me some ice and I will be fine." "If you don't go to the doctors right now I will call someone." Bella warned, she crossed her arms and stared down at me. I swatted her away. "Bella, just go to school." She didn't budge. "Get the hell out of here Bella, damn! Just leave!" I snapped, my voice rising. Her eyes widened before she turned and left my room. I let out a breath of relief when I heard my car start and drive away. There was no way in hell she was going to get me into the hospital. Not liking hospitals was one of the few things we had in common. But there was a difference for our reasoning behind it. Bella was afraid of blood and needles, I wasn't. A year before we moved to Forks I was at a two day part with my best friend. The second night she had drank so much that passed out. While she was unconscious she started shaking. I knew right away that something wasn't right and took her to the hospital. The woman at the desk asked if she had been drinking but I told her no because we were underage. For two hours I sat in the waiting room with my friend before we were called. She wouldn't wake up so they brought people out to wheel her back only to discover once they hooked her up with leads that she had no pulse. She had died while waiting to be seen. I found out shortly after that her blood alchohol levels were off the chart. She had died from alchohol poisoning and because I wasn't truthful about her drinking she died. I had fallen asleep shortly after she had left only to awaken when I heard a car coming down the drive. I thought maybe it was my sister coming home from school until I glanced at the clock and saw there was at least another 45 minutes until school let out. "Sophia." A male voice called, seconds after I heard the front door open and then close. I knew that voice, I didn't know who it belonged to but I remember hearing it at least once. "Sophia, it is Dr. Cullen." He called again as I heard him up on the landing. I felt my heart drop. What was he doing here? There was a knock on my bedroom door and then it opened. "I'm sorry to bother you but I recieved a call from your father who was called by your sister, who said you fell this morning and hurt your ankle." My eyes widened as I looked at him. He looked too young to be a doctor. He didn't have the stress lines on his face like any normal med student would've had from going through the stress of graduating. He didn't even look to have aged at all. "I'm fine, I just need some sleep." I lied. He took a step towards the end of my bed. "Do you mind?" he asked gesturing towards my foot. I sighed before shaking my head. There was no way I was going to get around this. I closed my eyes and practiced my breathing. I felt the blanket move and then the temperature change on my feet from the air. Dr. Cullen hissed, causing me to open my eyes curiously. He pulled his cellphone out of his pocket and hit a button before he held it to his ear. "Esme, do you mind warming up the xray machine I am bringing in Miss. Swan with an ankle injury." There was a brief response on the other end of the phone and then he hung up. "There is no way I'm going to the hospital." "I know, your father told me that you might be difficult to get into a hospital so I am going to, if you don't mind, take you to my home to do the xrays." I nodded my head. "Fine... okay." "I'm going to carry you out to my car." He explained as he pulled back the blankets and lifted me into his arms. I felt goosebumps rise on my arms as his skin brushed mine. He was so cold I began to shiver. As we began going down the stairs my ankle began hurting from the jostling. I closed my eyes and clenched my jaw as I did my best to not cry out in pain. When I opened them again we were outside. "I can walk." I mumbled as he carried me across the yard to where his car was. He didn't acknowlege my comment. When we reached his car he sat me on the trunk while he opened the door. Then very carefuly he helped me into the back seat before closing the door. He walked around the car and got into the drivers seat before he stuck the key into the ignition. With a gentle pur it started and then we were on our way. I stared out the window as we drove down the highway. To my amusement it was barely a five minute drive before he pulled off the road and onto a hidden driveway. Another few minutes and we were coming around a bend that opened up into a beautiful manicured front yard. Just like ours it consisted of a forest plants, meadow flowers and grass naturally spread out here and there. The house rose up in three stories, balconies and windows everywhere. It was like our cabin home but more modern, more elegant, more luxurious. Then the car door opened and my attention was rerouted as Dr. Cullen was lifting me from the backseat of the car where I sat. As he carried me up towards the front doors to his home a woman came out onto the porch. I recognized this woman, she was the one who was at my side the night I escaped from the woods. "Hello Sophia." she smiled as we reached her side. "Hi Mrs. Cullen." I replied through gritted teeth. She touched her husbands shoulder. "The x-ray machine is warmed up." she smiled before following us inside. Everything in the house was bright, white and expensive looking. On shelves and hanging on the walls were antiques that looked very old. I got a glance of what I assumed to be the living room before he carried me upstairs to the second floor. We entered into a room off the right that had several windows, a vaulted ceiling, books lining the walls and medical equipment set up everywhere. "You bring your work home a lot don't you?" I asked as he sat me up on the table and began prepping the xray boards. "I like what I do, yes." he said as he carefully adjust my leg for the x-ray. He walked back over to the wall and pressed a button that made a buzz sound. Then he came back and adjusted my leg again and repeated his process. This happened one more time before he said I was finished. At that moment his wife entered carrying a tray of adorned with different foods. "I thought you might be hungry." She said before setting it on a table. "Esme, I would like to move her to the living room." Her husband replied as he came back to my side. "Okay, I will just take this foot back downstairs and set up a comfortable spot for her." She said as she picked up the tray and left. Then I was in his arms again and we were going back down the stairs. Just like I thought the room I had glanced when we first came in was the living room. He sat me down on the couch and I looked around. Everything was white, with a touch of black here and there. There were black and white photos hanging here and there. The largest was a family photo of Mr. and Mrs. Cullen and their children. "Here you are." Mrs. Cullen was back at my side again with the tray of food. This time the tray of food was on a rolling kitchen cart. "What may I get you? I have sandwiches and soup." "Oh, that is sweet but you don't have to feed me I will be alright." "Now, now don't be silly. My husband told me your father said you fell as you were going to get ready for school so I know you haven't ate today." "I'll be fine, I promise." I watched her pull a plate from one of the small racks under the kitchen cart. Then she put together a sandwich and filled a soup bowl with some soup before placing it on a tray and handing it to me. "Eat up." She poured a cup of juice and set it in the cup holder before flashing me a warm smile. "Yes ma'am." I replied before I began nibbling on my sandwich. I had just finished with my soup when Dr. Cullen came into the living room with a folder in his hands. "I went over your x-rays and they show that you have a broken ankle and a fracture in your fibula." "What?" I shrieked. I can't believe this is happening to me. A broken ankle.... how the hell was I supposed to wear my shoes with a broken ankle. "Yes, you are lucky that you don't require surgery but you will need to wear a cast." I shook my head. "No.... I can't be seen in one of those." "Well unless you want to end up having surgery then you have no choice." He replied. When I heard the word surgery I thought of two things and two things only, hospitals and scars. There was no way in hell I was going to a hospital and I most definitely wasn't about to purposely throw myself into a situation that would end with me getting a huge scar. "Fine... lets just get this over with." I couldn't believe this was happening. He carried me back upstairs to his office and sat me in a chair before propping my leg up. Then he brought over the stuff needed for casting and began. "Because the fracture in your fibula is so high up I am going to give you a full leg cast. It is important that you don't walk on it cause you could make it worse." He glanced up at me as he began setting up the things he needed before he froze. "On second thought I think it would be better to have a flex angle so accidental walking won't be a problem." "How am I supposed to get around?" I asked as he applied the stockinette. "There are various means to get around, so there is no need to worry." he reassured me. "Any color you prefer?" he asked casually as he began rifling through a drawer. "I like blue...." He pulled out a blue roll and set it aside. Next he put on the cast padding and then began the process of wrapping the plaster casting tape. Ten minutes later I was staring at my leg, it was blue from my foot to the middle of my thigh. "How am I supposed to straighten my leg out?" "That's the point, it will heal faster if you don't move it or walk on it." The door opened and in came Alice. "Hello best friend." She said in a sing-song voice. "Hi." I forced a smile, doing my best to ignore the annoyance that the cast caused me. "I saw..." She glanced towards her dad and then looked back at me. "I heard that you broke your ankle." I nodded my head, smiling. "Well you heard right." I patted my cast, causing my ankle to erupt in pain again. "Yep..." I hissed as I winced from the pain. I then broke down into tears. My appearance was important to me. Now with this ugly cast that had to stay on for who knows how long I couldn't live up to my standards. There were only a few things in my closet that would work well with this blue cast. What was I going to do now? "There, there Sophia." She soothed as she wrapped her arm around me. I shivered at her cold touch. "I'm sorry." I wiped tears from my eyes before I smirked and turned my head away in embarrassment. "This is just new to me." "You know what make me happy." she asked me. I slowly shook my head. "Sleep over, shopping, makeovers!" She squeaked, shaking her fists in excitment. It was hard to not smile when you were around this girl, that alone cheered me up from my funk. "That would be fun if my dad would let me stay during a week day." "Just let me talk to him, I am sure I can persuad him into letting you stay." Her smile was infectious. Something was definitely different about her. Though I didn't know exactly what it was I knew that it had to be something good.
