Chapter 7

After doing our shopping we first went to put the groceries away and then we started to make our way to the pack. Where that jerk was holding my car hostage. We were still talking about the realities of being a scholarship student for the pack. “I just made it in. Their requirements are insane! Don’t you agree?” I do but at the same time, I strive to accomplish them. I wonder if I only made it in too? “It was a lot of work, but I started very young so I could really build up my resume. I was the Luna’s assistant and helped arrange all the pack events. I was probably involved at sixty events over the years. It meant I got to be close with the Luna and Alpha. Getting the recommendation letter was easy. My GPA was only a 3.96. I wish I had a 4.0.” I told her my resume. “I don’t think I will struggle with studying and the workload. I just need to stay organized and focused. I can’t prolong my stay. That is why I need to talk to the Alpha. I’m expected to return to my pack once I’m done studying since they have appointed me as the Luna. They offered to pay for my studies, but my parents rejected the offer. They aren’t paying for my studies, because they don’t want me to study. They want me to just stay home and live the life of a wife and breeder. I wanted an adventure.” I explained to her. “You are really intimidating. When I said I just made it in, I meant it. It sounds like you got in easily.” It was not easy. “It wasn’t easy. I literally had to work my ass off for years. It could have been easy if my parents were willing to pay for me, I could have actually had a life and friends, but instead, I worked every moment that I was awake, every day for years, just to meet the requirements.” I was a bit angry that she thought it was so easy when it was the complete opposite. “I was the perfect daughter, the perfect pack member and the perfect worker. I had to match those expectations every day. It was exhausting.” Thinking about it. This wasn’t how today should have gone either. I wasn’t supposed to be in lines all day and then had my car towed. This was supposed to be a new beginning. I guess it is because no one would have ever dared to tow my car back home. It’s one of those benefits I got from working with the Luna. I wonder if my parents were right and I’m so sheltered from them doing everything for me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it…I shouldn’t have said anything. I get it now…the difference between me and you. I actually had friends and went out. I still enjoyed my life. You were completely task-orientated and focused.” I didn’t mean to make her feel bad. This is also not the best start I guess. “I was too goal-orientated. Now that I’m finally here I want to change that.” I want friends and a life, so I shouldn’t be scaring away the first friend I make. “So you didn’t have any friends?” Now I just sound pathetic. “I guess Sander was my friend, but we never hung out. He worked for the Alpha like I worked for the Luna. We saw each other at events and things, but he had a life unlike me. He used to have a new girl at each event, but he recently admitted that he did it to get my attention and try to get me jealous. He told me that he liked me, but then he had to leave to go train to be an enforcer. I kissed him before he left.” I said blushing as I thought back to the only two kisses I’ve ever had. “Wait, but you said that you need to go back to be Luna and he is training to be an enforcer, so is it really smart to have this crush? I mean you must be paired with one of the Alphas' sons. It would be a bit complicated if you are in love with your Alpha husband's enforcer and bodyguard.” I smiled at how cute she was. She was worried about me getting hurt. I on the other hand knew that it wouldn’t be a problem. “My Alpha doesn’t have sons which is why they are picking their successors. He has daughters who have no interest in actually taking over or finding their mates. I guess the Alpha and Luna have been grooming us. The Alpha sent Sander to become an enforcer so that he will be able to fight when someone tries to challenge him in the Alpha position.” I explained the situation to her. “You are so lucky that the guy you like has been chosen to be yours and it elevates your position in the pack. You get everything that you could ever wish for. It’s every girl’s dream to become Luna and have a big, strong and dominant Alpha to take care of them.” She clearly has a fetish to be dominated. I don’t want that. I’ve never been big on needing a big and strong man to look after me. I’ve never been one who wanted to be a kept she-wolf. “What are you going to do if you find your Mate?” I thought about this before accepting their offer. “I’ve never really wanted a mate. I never wanted to settle down before. I wanted to get away and discover who I am outside of my family and the pack.” For someone that worked so hard for the pack, I wanted to get away from it way too much. “Then why are you going back?” I never thought I would be going back, until they made the offer. “I’m not indifferent to my pack and my family. I just wanted to be someone other than perfect. The Alpha and Luna have always been great to me and I understand the predicament they would find themselves in. There is no one to take over at the moment which will leave the pack open for a takeover. There are some bad conquering packs and I didn’t want that to be the fate of the pack. So I’m going back, after all the Luna has been training me for years.” I explained my reasoning. It is all very good reasons, but not one of them is that I wanted to be the Luna. “We’re here.” She said as we turned onto a dirt road. I thought that ‘the pack’ would be a lot fancier. I thought that it would have a gated community, paved driveways and so on. “Why is the pack so far away from the university? I thought since they manage the university they would have to be close to it.” The students that live here must leave so much earlier than the ones that live in the dorms. “They don’t want an attack on the pack to influence the university and vice versa. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but once we get to the main area you’ll see just how protected this place is. They don’t need walls for them to feel secure.” true to her word we started to close in on an area that was more open. The houses started out small, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t beautiful. All the houses looked the same. They were all so neatly kept, clearly they are painted yearly, and they are painted in different shades of grey with white windows, white doors and a white finish around the roof. Each house has green grass and a stone pathway. That leads to their individual parking. The longer we drove the bigger the houses got and at the end of the road was a large house. It looks just like the other ones, but a lot bigger. In front of the house was a roundabout garden. Since it was the end of the street you needed to drive around the garden to head back out. All around the house was a garden as well. The house even had two balconies on the second floor that probably looked out on all the houses. “Have you been lost gawking at the houses or did you notice it?” notice what? I looked again, but this time I looked around the houses. Sure enough, I saw cameras. each house had at least three cameras that I could see. One at the front door and one on each side of the house. I imagine there is one at the back as well. At the top of the main packhouse, I saw a glint in the sun. Looking up I noticed that it was a guard with a gun. I was sure there were probably quite a few gunmen hiding around. “They also have three patrol routes, each a 100 meters apart. There is never a gap. If you make it through the one patrol you’ll be caught by the second or third. Of course, you have to get passed the hunters who are all over the woods. There is no way that they are getting attacked here. They don’t really care about attacks at the university. Think about it all the students already paid the money for the year so if they died it won’t influence the pack.” She knows so much about the pack. “I’ve been around a while.” She answered my unasked question. There was a small road that went behind the main pack house. I didn’t even notice it. It is hidden behind the garden. Behind the house was a bunch of buildings, we drove past all of them and then we drove back into the woods. Finally, I saw a lot with a bunch of cars. “There you go, just go to the office and get your car. I will see you back at the dorm. Fingers crossed for your talk with the Alpha.” I thanked her and got out of the car. I walked over to the office and had to end up filling in a bunch of forms again. I don’t understand why I had to fill in the forms. I feel like the person who towed my car should fill in why he towed my car. I mean he took a photo of my information. He has everything that is needed for this form. I think he is the one who should be doing this, but he is too lazy. I was only supposed to come in, pay and take my car. This laziness is the reason he is so miserable. If he had put in the effort he could have graduated by now, but that is only my opinion. I’ll see how difficult it is when I start to work for the pack. I finished the form and got my keys as I walked past him I slammed the papers on his chest. “Here I have done your work for you.” He looked guilty so I knew I was right. I got in my car and drove to the pack house. I parked to the side where there was parking. I got out and walked into the pack house. It looked more like an office building on the inside. There was a receptionist. Her desk was right in front of the stairs. “Hi, I would like to see the Alpha,” I said as I got to the desk. The girl looked up at me from her phone. “Do you have an appointment?” No, then I would say I’m here to see the Alpha or I have an appointment. I feel she should know the difference. She should also not be on her phone and notice people who come walking in. I mean she is a werewolf, she should have heard me coming in and looked up. “No. I don’t have an appointment.” I told her. She rolled her eyes at me like I was so clueless. Aren’t the people in this pack allowed to see their Alpha? Is he only available when they make an appointment? That won’t work because what if a problem suddenly arises? “Then you won’t be able to see him.” She said before looking back down on her phone. She is being so rude. “My name is Dilara, I’m one of the new scholarship students. I really need to talk to the Alpha.” I tried again. Maybe if she hears what it is related to then she would try and get me a moment with him. “Then you are lucky because you will have a one-on-one with him tomorrow.” She said with a bit of sarcasm in her tone. I don’t think I have ever met anyone so rude. That is saying a lot since the guy who towed my car was also very rude. No one in my old pack was like this, the pack was a kind one and we were all very dedicated. “I need to see him today. There are a few things I need to discuss with him before I do the ceremony. I’m willing to wait.” I explained to her. It’s important that I talk things over with the Alpha before I am welcomed into the pack. So far I know the whole point of the scholarships is that they get free labour while you are studying and afterwards you are a full member of the pack and you use your degree to help the pack. The pack has to benefit by taking in strangers. “Just do whatever you want. It’s not like you will take no for an answer. The Alpha isn’t in at the moment. You might be waiting for quite some time.” She said and once again looked down at her phone. I swear that she just wants me to leave her alone so that she can do her own thing. I walked over to a couch that was nearby and sat down. I don’t care how long I need to wait. I’m a patient person. I wish I brought something with me to read. I don’t want to sit here on my phone like she is doing and miss it when the Alpha comes in. I already know how he looks since I checked up on all the photos of everyone involved in the university and how the different lectures look for my course. The girl was right. I ended up waiting a really long time. I was almost ready to give up and come back the next morning before the ceremony. Just as I was about to give up he had come walking into the building. It was strange how quiet this building was. Our main packhouse back home was always busy and buzzing with people. “Alpha Venery, could I have a moment of your time,” I said as I jumped up and approached him. “Who are you?” He asked me in return. At least he didn't just ignore me, because I do think that it is something that he would do. “My name is Dilara Seren. I’m a new scholarship student. I won’t waste your time.” I assured him as fast as I could. I’ve been waiting a long time and I really need to talk to him. I don’t want him to blow me off. “I remember you. Your previous Alpha held you in high esteem. You must not have ambushed him too often.” I never had to because he had more of an open-door policy. He cared to know what was happening at all times in the pack, but I can’t say that. “I admire your guts, so I’ll give you a couple of minutes. Follow me.” that was easier than I thought. The way he started this conversation had me thinking he wouldn’t give me his time. I followed him right to his office. It was a mess. It was also very dark and gloomy. There wasn’t a woman's touch anywhere in this room. Alpha Silvano’s office always had a plant, even if it kept dying because he forgot about it. Emilia thought it was important. “Sit down.”I nodded and took a seat across from him. “Your application was impressive. I’ve wanted to meet you since reading it. I think that you will be a valuable asset to our pack.” at least he knows who I am which makes things a bit easier. “That is why I need to talk to you. I can’t become a permanent member of your pack. It was the plan, but it changed.”I started to explain. “So you decided to pay for your studies instead of being on a scholarship?” No that isn’t it. “No unfortunately not. Alpha Silvano offered to pay for my studies, but my parents weren’t allowing it. I’ve been appointed as the future Luna of my pack back home. After I have finished studying I need to go back and take that position.”I explained hoping that we could come up with a solution. “You want to study at our expense and then just leave when you are done, do you see how this isn’t going to work? What do we get out of supporting you?” That is a good question, but I already have the answer ready. I’ve been thinking about every possible question he could ask. “While I’m studying I will do any job you give me. I’ll work harder than I ever have before. I'll be at your pack's beck and call until the day I graduate. I will also get a job and pay you back every cent of my studies. So this will be more like a loan.” I saw him smiling at me and it wasn’t a pleasant smile. Not at all. It made my skin crawl because, in the back of my mind, I knew I just said something he wanted to hear and it was a trap. “I’m 100% fine with that arrangement. I will draw up the papers for a loan agreement. You will be allowed to leave the pack the moment you finish paying me back every last cent.” This feels like it went by too easily, my wolf is on high alert. “You will be working for the pack house. I want to keep an eye on you personally. I need to take care of a valuable asset when I see one.” I don’t like being referred to as an asset like I’m just some object, some pawn he can do with whatever he wants, but that is the deal I put forth so I need to live with it.
