Chapter Five
Jordan Lancaster
I followed Delores boyfriend away from my car so that we could talk but I was starting to regret because the place was so grimy. The whole town was filled with filth and poor people and that made me feel a little dirty too.
He stopped by one spoilt car and I furrowed my eyebrows at him as I stopped too, staring at him with my hands in my white trouser pocket.
"Don't tell me we're going to stand here?" I snorted and he nodded.
I heaved a sigh and looked around, I spotted a small cafeteria there.
"Let's talk over there." I pointed and went ahead.
"I ain't gonna buy anything for you if that's what you want." I heard him say but I chuckled and shook my head.
I entered first and took a seat. He sat in front of me and the waitress came to our table.
"What may I get for you, pretty boys?" She asked seductively.
"We aren't ordering.. ....."
"Two cream sodas." I cut him off and she wrote it down and went to get it.
I just relaxed in the chair and stared at him.
"You're trying to act cool, huh? Well that won't change my mind. I won't agree that my girlfriend pretends to be who she's not. If Delilah is missing, find her." He spat and I chuckled again.
"Your consent doesn't matter here. And I don't need your opinion too, you are just being informed that your girlfriend will be mine for a few months or something like that."
"Of course, my opinion matters here. She's mine and I can make her quit too." He yelled and the waitress brought the order.
Alvin picked up the drink and sipped it.
"I'm sorry but Delores doesn't even have much choices here, Alvin, the Jackson family owes me and they still do. I don't mean to boost but her mother pulls a lot so if you're willing to pay and continue paying, I'll let her go." I explained.
He went silent for a while.
I averted my gaze to the cold glass of cream soda and contemplated if I should drink it. I looked around to see if the place was neat and it was but I didn't want to hurt my stomach.
"Can't you find someone else?"
"My father doesn't know me to be a womanizer. And Delores claims Delilah will be back. I don't force her, in fact I didn't force her to agree to this. So this isn't my fault." I shrugged nonchalantly.
Alvin seemed to be in confusion.
"If there's nothing else, I'd like to take my leave." I stood up and walked away.
I was walking back to my car when some kids playing on by the side run into me and alas! stained my white pants.
The child fell down and started crying. I groaned and cussed at her, eying her.
The kid's cry got louder.
She was attracting stares but I didn't care. I just stared at the splotch of chocolate ice cream on my pants.
"Hey, will you stop crying? Do you know how much this thing costs? Can you even pay for it to be washed?" I yelled angrily and this time the kid started screaming like hell.
Delores got down from the car and walked over when she heard her and turned.
"What did you do to this poor child, Jordan?" She asked as she helped the girl up.
"What the? Can't you see what she's done to my white pants? I want her to pay for the washing since you are here to intervene. Take it for me." I stretched my hand to take it.
She shook her head at me.
"You want to take money from such a child?"
"I bought this with my last coin." The girl cried more and Delores shook her head again.
"You are so heartless, Jordan. Come on, let's go get you guys real food." She offered and the girl stopped crying.
I eyed the girl.
"Who's taking who out? Where are you guys going? Can't you see she's trying to take advantage of you?" I pointed.
"Stop it, Jordan, you'll make them feel bad. If you won't buy them something, don't do that."
I walked out on them and went to stand beside the car.
"Let's go, Delores, leave them and let's go." I ordered.
"No Jordan, we need to go and buy them something."
"Where are we going to get them something to eat in this place?"
"Let's drive them there, then. I can't stand to see them go hungry so please." She begged and I felt bad.
I averted my gaze to the kid who stood there waiting.
"Then give them money and let's go."
She thought about it and agreed. She rummaged through her bag, looking for money.
She gave up.
"Jordan, please may I borrow some money?"
"What? She owes me and I thought you were the one who said you wanted to help them and where are you going to get the money to pay me?" I asked, sounding annoying.
"Alright, if you won't give, I'll take some from Alvin."
"Hey, wait. Take this."
I easily pulled out $100 and handed it over with a scowl on my face.
"I really hate you for making me look like a bad guy, Delores Jackson." I muttered once we sat down and the driver started the car.
I didn't worry about the driver hearing us because there was a soundproof glass separating us.
"Thanks for helping the kids, Jordan." She said sincerely and so sober.
I snorted and looked ahead.
"Why? Are you a lover of kids?"
"Aren't you?" She asked, her voice too low but I heard her.
"No. They are nosy and so troublesome. I don't like them."
"Those kids remind me of my past when we were kids."
I turned my head to look at her because I thought she was making a joke out of this but she didn't laugh.
She even had tears in her eyes.
"Why do they remind you of your past? Did you meet some kids like them?"
"No. Delilah and I were them."
"Poor?" I asked unsure and she nodded.
I raised an eyebrow at her .
"I thought you guys were born into a rich family. That was what she told me."
"She lied. I don't want to talk about it, Jordan. All I will say is thanks for giving them something." She said and turned to face the window but I was still pondering on her revelation.
They weren't rich? And Delilah told me they were and that they used to live in Canada.
What more don't I know about this family and how many more lies am I bound to uncover?
