LUCIEN
My foggy vision made out the ceiling and sensation returned to my limbs. My fingers gripped what I knew to be my sheets. My head hurt a storm as I sat up. Why wasn't I at work? The shirt and tie indicated it was a weekday.
The memory came like a blinding light. She rejected me. Why would the Moon goddess give me a mate that would reject me in the end? I ground my teeth as I remembered every detail. Forcing myself not to think of my driver seeing all that, my thoughts moved to the first day I dreamed of her.
"Hi love," said a beautiful blonde woman whose sapphire eyes pierced my soul. She threw herself into my lap and kissed him.
I couldn't resist the smile that broke out on my face at the memory of that dream. It was dear to me no matter how short it was. The next one was almost even shorter.
I was seated in the park at Middleton waiting for my client to show up. He was five minutes late and I gripped my briefcase to control my temper. Who shows up late for an appointment they fixed?
Unfortunately, children were playing close to me and I wasn't very fond of those creatures at the time. A yellow ball rolled over to me, my shoe being the barrier between it and infinity. A little blonde girl ran over to get it. "I'm sorry, Mr.," she apologized, staring at me with the cutest pout I'd ever seen.
"Uh, it's fine." I cracked an awkward smile and she beamed before going back to play.
'Mate!' my wolf screamed.
'Lyall, you're not serious. She's a child.' He tried speaking again but I shut him out.
What started out as pleasant memories soon turned to pain. Why did the goddess think I should be paired with a human? It didn't even. Make sense.
'Well, it's better for you to find out for yourself,' Lyall said.
'Lyall, please give helpful advice at least.'
'Her birthday is in two days, isn't it? Go then. She'll be in a better mood to hear you out.'
"It won't work," I said out loud.
"Sir?"
I focused my gaze to see that a maid was standing beside my bed and there was a tray close to me. When she did come in?
"You can go," I dismissed. Not feeling hungry, I resumed my conversation with Lyall.
'It won't work.'
'You doubted me once.'
He had a point though. When I doubted the identity of my mate before I turned twenty, he only ended up being right. 'Alright then.'

The driver parked at a strategic spot. Taking a deep breath, I got out of the car and marched to the house playing unnecessarily loud music. Teenagers.
It wasn't hard to find her once I squeezed past the worst of the sweaty teenagers. My eyes almost popped when I saw her. Dressed in a sea-green gown and her hair curled in layers, Diane looked as beautiful as ever. I momentarily remembered the rejection incident but put it past me immediately.
I stayed to admire the beauty the moon goddess gifted me. I still had so many questions but those could wait. Before I could get to her, she started dancing. With a guy. I clenched and unclenched my fists in a bid to calm myself.
'Why is he touching her like that?' Lyall fumed. And then I saw it. The fucker was holding her waist like someone wanted to snatch her from him.
"He's just a human teenager. He doesn't know what's going on," I kept reminding myself, digging my hands deeper into my pockets for stability. Oh, if I had my way, this boy should be broken in pieces.
Just before the dance ended, Diane left that boy and came in my direction. She was so fast, I would have thought she was supernatural if I didn't know better.
"What are you doing here," she whispered angrily.
"I need to speak with you," I said coolly. I was almost insane because of this girl but no way was she getting the chance to humiliate me before her friends. "Can you come outside?"
"No," she grunted.
"Hey, isn't that Lucien Kane?" Someone shouted.
"Yeah, he sure looks like him."
"What's a billionaire doing at Diane's party?" came a high-pitched voice.
Smirking, I asked her, "You sure you don't want to step outside?"
I was sure she hated me now. Her face said it all. But I'd teach her who I really am.
As soon as we were far enough from the party, she burst out, "You psycho! How many times do I need to tell you that werewolves don't exist? Like, is this a joke?"
"No, it's not. I can prove to you that I'm a werewolf and you're my Luna. Do you think I would abandon everything I have to do if it was just a joke?"
She stared at me for a while. I almost dared to think she was ready to believe me. But no, this girl wasn't that easy to get. So when she burst out laughing, I wasn't surprised.
Clapping, she said, "You just be an actor, right? Because that explains why your makeup makes you look so much like Mr. Kane. I hope you win an Oscar someday."
"This isn't a joke." I was getting irritated already.
'Goodness me, why is she trying so hard?' Lyall wondered.
"Look, Mr. Actor or Mr. Psycho, whichever you are, leave me alone. How did you even know it was my birthday and my party was here? I just turned eighteen and I want to enjoy it."
"I know."
"Creep," she muttered.
"I'm just asking you to give me a chance to prove my claims."
"Guess what? You'll never get that chance because I don't know you and this is just full-on stalker vibes."
I took her hand. "If you don't let me go, I will scream," she threatened.
My fist connected with her when she tried. A little panicked, I picked her up and sped to the car.
