Mysterious prankster
DIANE
"That's all the planning we can do for now. You should go before your lunch break is over." My mother said to me with a smile on her face.
"So we've covered the dress, decorations, and guests. What about the cake?" I asked, creasing my forehead.
"We can get Daphne to do that. Don't worry," My mother assured, kissing my forehead before ushering me off to school.
I dashed out of the restaurant after briefly checking my wristwatch. I had only ten minutes to get back to school. 'Oh damn.' For some unknown reason, the sidewalks were rowdier than they should have been or maybe I was just the only one in a hurry.
Middleton High school finally came into view after some huffing and puffing, and I wished I could fly there.
I was about to cross the street when someone tapped me from behind. "Hi, look, can we talk later? I have to be at" I stopped short when I finally turned.
Emerald eyes, chiseled cheekbones, and a jawline on a handsome face stared down at me from an intimidating height. He was wearing a bowler hat, and a coat and wasn't smiling.
"Hi," he said quietly, cracking a small smile.
"Hi."
"I need to talk to you, Diane," he started. "Just a minute."
"Uh, sure." I checked her watch and confirmed I was surely going to be late. But as I looked up at him, I was sure I had seen him somewhere, in a magazine maybe. A business magazine. My eyes widened as it dawned on me: Lucien Kane, one of the top prominent people.
"…and I understand this will shock you, but you are my mate," he concluded, keeping his hands in his pockets to control his demeanor.
I furrowed my brows in confusion as I stared at him.
I must have heard him wrongly.
“Can you please come again?” I asked politely.
I watched as he took in a deep breath and exhaled deeply.
“I said you are my mate,” he replied, his voice a little louder than before.
I swallowed the invisible lump that formed in my throat as I stared at him perplexed before I burst into a fit of laughter.
"If this is a joke then you’ve got me. Mate? That's for animals," I replied, finding it hard to believe.
"I'm serious, Diane. It's surprising but I know what I'm talking about, and I've been watching you for a very long time,” he said and I furrowed my brows in confusion.
What is he talking about? Has he been watching me and why is he saying I am his mate?
I took in a deep breath and exhaled. “I don’t know what it is that you are talking about and now that I think about it, how did you know my name?” I had not questioned that but now that he said he has been watching me for a long time, it made me suspicious.
“We are humans, not animals and I’m guessing you watch a lot of werewolf movies because why would you think I’m your mate? You are almost thirty and I am seventeen about to be eighteen so what is it that you are talking about?” I was frantic and at the same time he was creeping me out.
What is he? What does he think he is talking about and why would he think I am his mate? Thinking about it made me cringe.
This side of the pavement became busy as students hurried back to school. Lucien moved, taking me along. I tried to pull my hand from his grip.
"Let go of me, you creep!” I chided.
“Let go of me!” I shouted.
“Just keep quiet. Be obedient and listen to me,” he said but I didn’t listen.
How could he approach me and claim that I am his mate when we aren’t animals? Is he sick by chance? Why is a renowned billionaire acting this way and what is he doing?
“No I won’t keep quiet and you won’t make me shut my mouth! Let go of me or I will scream!” I warned.
"Consider what I've said before jumping to conclusions, Diane,” he said, sounding so serious and I’m so convinced that he needs medical assistance.
“When they said rich people are given very rich sickness, you are an example of that. You are sick Mr. Lucien Kane! Let go of me!” I struggled to remove his hold on my wrist.
“I know it’s weird but I’m serious. Let me…”
"Yeah, you're serious.” I cut him off harshly.
“How the hell do you even know my name?" Before he could answer, I went on. "Oh yeah, that's what stalkers do right?”
“I’m not a stalker,” he strongly denied, letting go of my wrist and I shook my head in disbelief.
“And when has a madman ever accepted that he is mad?” I folded my arms across my chest while glaring at him.
“I am not mad okay and I know what it is that I am talking about. Just try to understand what it is that I am saying,” he explained and I scoffed.
“And what is it are you trying to say? That you are a werewolf?” I asked.
“Yes,” he replied almost immediately.
“Wow!“ I muttered.
“Since you want to play the supernatural game, let's do it and get it over with, Mr. Lucien Kane. I, Diane Kingsley, reject you to be my mate, or whatever. Okay.” I said firmly while staring into his eyes so he knows that I am serious.
“What? You can’t reject me. I am your mate and you are my mate and it…”
“Blah, blah, blah! I’m done listening to you and to think I thought you were a responsible and respectable man but I guess I was wrong. Stay away from me,” I warned in a stern tone before walking away and not looking back.
“Werewolf? Werewolf my foot! What nonsense!” I muttered under my breath.
