Angel POV.
I went to sleep later that night, I was exhausted, I know my job seems to be stupid and easy, but it's so hard, and it's time-consuming, I spend my whole day paying attention to what's said, and obeying rules, I love structures but deep inside I'm a brat, and I hate obeying rules, I hate the fact that I have to do as I'm told the whole time, I hate paying attention the whole time, sometimes all I want to do is just daydream or maybe read a story or watch a show on my phone.
I wake up sometimes in the middle of the night, my phone is going crazy, I open one eye and look at the phone, it's another warning from my government, didn't our president just die? Who the hell is taking care of all the warning messages, I groaned and tried to go back to sleep, I didn't care, we're under attack, and whatever attack we're under can wait for me to wake up, I muted my phone and went back to sleep, I was exhausted.
I woke up the next morning and did the same routine all over again, I had to get ready and move to work, it was Thursday and I ran out of clean shirts, I had to repurpose my cleanest shirt with the plan of doing laundry before the night's end.
I got in my car and started the drive to work, today it was different, there wasn't the usual traffic and it's a Thursday, it's not a day that we usually have empty roads, maybe it's the warning, people have actually obeyed the warning and decided to stay home, not me, I have to work. I made it to the company and I saw that the whole parking lot was filled, it's a sign that my company was working as usual, we don't stop no matter the consequences. I got inside the building and started my usual routine, breakfast, notes, meetings, and everything else, the same warning, the same words of the fact that the attacks, whatever they were were getting closer to us, to our streets, to our companies, and there's a million analysit talking about what this might be.
"This is an attack, the government is lying to us! It's another take on the whole nuclear war, what is the government hiding, what aren't they telling us, they are killing us, and they are taking the innocent but what for? Another experiment to see if the nuclear war has left any residue on us?" the analyst says, I roll my eyes at all the suggestions he had, sure whatever he says, I didn't really care, I just wanted this day to be over with.
"So Angelico, what do you think all these attacks are about?" my boss asks me and I can't help my growl.
"I'm sure they are attacking all the people that can't manage to say their employee's name correctly," I answer him between gritted teeth and he just laughed, he's close to being a victim of attacks and I can blame it on the unknown forces that are causing all of this noise.
"You're funny Angelico, maybe it's better if you stay with me tonight, just to be safe," the boss says looking me up and down, this isn't the first time he tries to hit on me and this won't be the last time I tell him to f**k off.
"I'm good just getting to my own home," I answer him, deciding to leave work just a tiny bit earlier today, I was getting ready to leave, and I got my stuff and my car keys out.
I was waiting for the elevator to get here when I heard the fire alarm in the building, and we all know from the fire training we have regularly in the company that when a fire starts, you don't take the elevator, you run as fast as possible down the stairs and out toward the parking lot, I looked around the floor, most of us are still here, we haven't left yet.
Some people looked at each other not sure if this alarm was the real thing or just another trial alarm, but since I wanted to get out of here, since I couldn't wait to get out, I took this as my cue to just leave, I ran as fast as possible down the stairs, good thing I went with sneakers again, I wasn't the only one running down, most of us happy to leave the work early.
"We're being attacked, run!" I heard someone yell from downstairs, but I didn't understand what was going on, I had one more floor to go through and then I'd get home.
"They are in! They are in!" someone else yells running up the stairs while we were trying to get down and away, some people ran up, others kept trying to go down, and I was stuck in the middle, I was pushed both up and down, but I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted out of the building, even if we're being attacked, out sounds safer.
I received hits right in my face, in my stomach and a couple in my back, who's attacking us? Cause all I could tell and see was that the other employees were attacking each other, I heard and saw some falling down on the ground and being stepped on, I made sure not to step on anyone, I didn't want to hurt anyone, I just wanted to get away.
I made it to the ground floor and saw people that I didn't recognize, so this wasn't a lie, we were being attacked, they didn't have any weapons on them, so what were they attacking us with, I didn't stand long to understand what's going on, I had to get away from here, the main door was out of the question, but the good thing about being a PA and not someone who's that important in the company, I knew other ways in and out, other than the main door, I went to the back, I had to take notes during the fire training and I knew there is an emergency door.
I went through it and ran out, most of the commotion was around the main door, people in this company really need to pay attention, I ran toward the parking lot, there were more of those, they looked like normal people, but again, there were no weapons to be seen and I had no idea what and how they are attacking.
I ran between the cars, keeping my head low, staying as quiet as possible, to the back of the parking until I got to my car, they had closed on the cars up in front, and again, I was happy that I was not someone too important to earn a parking spot up close.
I got in my car and tried to turn it on, but the stupid car wouldn't stop, I have an older car, I might be able to afford a car, but that doesn't mean that I can afford a fancy one, after the third trial finally the car turned on and I hit the gas getting away from this place, I hit a couple cars on my way out, but I didn't care, I was getting away, the street was even emptier then it was this morning.
I turned the radio on trying to keep up with whatever was happening in the world and trying to undertsand what I had gotten myself into, but the reporter had no new news, they didn't mention our company or our streets, they were still mentioning the same ones from this morning, along with the new president voting, who's going to vote! The dead? The attacker?
Maybe this was a way to get a new president in, or maybe it's all just a political play, I don't put it above them they'd do it, they had a full-on nuclear war once upon a time, so why not do it again, we're a stupid race, we'd do the stupid thing and we never learn our lesson.
I kept on speeding all the way home, I parked my car, locked my car and ran up to my apartment, I got in, locked the door behind me, making sure it was closed twice, I didn't turn the lights on in my home, I kept them all turned off, turning only a small lamp and the TV, keeping up with the news, trying to understand whatever is going on but my brain was hurting, no one knew anything, and everyone was talking, soon a breaking news came in saying my company is down, that most of the employee were taken, but where? Maybe it's a good thing that I got away, I was safe but for how long before my home gets attacked as well? I was terrified.
