1-Warning.
Angel POV.
I woke up to a message on my phone, no one texts me, not my work friends, they don't like me that much and I don't like them either, I'm a twenty-three-year-old girl, with no friends or family, I'm someone who lives in this world all alone, it's just me, myself and I.
I looked at my phone and saw the message from the government, that's never good, I live in America, it's the land of dreams, the land of f****d up government, and I don't care what others would say.
The year is 2886, and the world is still the same as it ever was, it's just another day, and the sun still shines every morning, and sets every night, humans have to get up every morning and go to sleep every night, we have to work and we have to eat, and pay bills, our life is the same as the ancient ones before us, nothing has changed, you'd think a nuclear war would have changed our minds or the way we look at the world, but we didn't, we built the world all over again and we continued from the point we have left it behind.
'Take shelter, war warning,' that's what the message said, another nuclear war? I didn't believe it was another nuclear war, after the last one we lost all nuclear technology and the humans have sworn to never tap into it again. Maybe it's just a test message, maybe it means nothing, what kind of war would have started, what kind of countries would fight against each other?
I ignored it, I didn't believe my government, shame on me, I thought to myself with an eye roll and went to the bathroom to get ready for the day, I washed up, brushed my hair and put on my clothes.
Sadly for me, I have a corporate job, I work in a company, and I have no idea what the damn company does, it's a publication company, but I personally work in the legal department, I'm not a big shot, I'm not someone important, I'm just a PA, a personal assistant, my job is to run errands, and look nice while doing it, not by choice of course.
I got dressed for the day, I had to wear a skirt and a blouse, and I had to look proper, along with my dark blond hair brushed and pulled back into a ponytail, I added some make-up on my face, and I'm too fair and bland without a bit of blush to give my cheeks a slight tint, some mascara to make my eyelashes stand up, and just a bit of lipstick to make my lips look fuller.
I added my shoes, it's not high heels, I can't manage to walk in those, just a regular flat, sometimes I'd wear my sneakers since I have to run around often, to get coffee, and take papers to the mail, and other stupid tasks that I have to do during the day. I finished getting ready adding some perfume before I left the house ready to get to work, I went down to my car, it's my pride and joy, no more running around using public transportation, I finally got to use a car instead.
I turned my car on and started the long drive toward my work, I don't live nearby, and I can't afford to live in the middle of the city, I could hardly afford my shitty apartment, and I didn't have breakfast like usual, I'm always running late and I know I'm gonna have to buy coffee and breakfast for the people I work for, and I could catch a bite for myself.
The roads were filled with people, no one gave a damn about the war announcement on our phones, and none of us cared, there's no war, and even if there was, we're not going to run away, I have work to do and bills to pay. I made it to work, I parked my car in the back of the parking lot, the closer ones are meant for the managers, so not me, I walked in with a big groan on my face, here's to another day of hell.
I went to the fourth floor, and I was hit with the first order of coffee and breakfast, but thankfully my boss was a nice guy, nice enough to tell me to get something for myself, I know not to splurge too much over my food to make sure I get offered to buy something again tomorrow. I went to the close by coffee shop, this is why I wear running shoes, it's to help me run back and forward to work while I get everyone's order, I placed my food order and stood back waiting for it.
"Hey turn that up," a guy says from behind me, he meant the TV, and when I looked I could see the red Breaking News covering the screen.
"What the f**k?" the barista says as she turned the volume to the max letting the whole shop hear the news.
"Breaking news, we are under attack, the government have tried to let out a warning, but the citizen of the new America has decided to ignore it, the white house is down, the president is dead, the roads are being attacked, but who is attacking us," the reporter says, I didn't believe it, I don't believe we're under attack.
"Yes, hello Morgan, we're here live on the streets where there's said to be attacked, there's no military force, this is a safe area," the news reporter says, so are we under attack or not, I don't believe it, the barista didn't believe it either, she turned the volume back down and went back to her work,
I got the food and started the walk back toward the company, I walked in delivered the food and took my place out on my desk, I took a couple bites of my sandwich while I typed away on the keyboard, I had to write the notes, I have to review the emails, answering the stupid ones and forwarding the more important one. I kept on working, my day had just started and I needed to hurry up and finish my desk work before we moved to the many meetings I had to take notes during.
"Angelina, let's go," my boss says and I give him the look that says I can kill him.
"It's just Angel," I corrected him for the million times, my name wasn't short for anything, it's just Angel and I hate when people think it's okay to add letters to my name.
He ignored me and kept moving, I ran after him, and we made it to the conference room and the meeting started, I had to pay attention and take notes, I wrote everything down and so the day passed, I had to run out again to get my boss lunch, and I get to eat some as well.
I went to another restaurant and they had the TV blaring out loud, the same warning as this morning, the reporter who was meant to be covering the whole story has gone missing, no one knows where that reporter is, and I had some of my own doubts it's all a lie, sure the president is dead, who cares, this is the new America, and we obey no president.
"Maybe we're being attacked by aliens," a girl says as she eats her food with a chuckle, the attacks have gone wider, it's not just the same street as this morning.
"Until they get here, I'm gonna need a refill," someone else says making everyone laugh, he's right, until they get here, we don't have much to worry about.
I took the lunch and went back to the company, I handed my boss the food and went to write the notes I had taken during the meeting, there was another message on my phone from the government, this time it was a warning to stay inside, not to go toward the streets that under attack, to stay safe, and to pray for the soul of our president, I ignored that message and went back to work.
I wrapped up my work around six pm, I went toward my car and drove back home after another long day at work, there were many people on the street, and no one believed the other warning.
I made it home safely and parked my car, I went toward my place opened the door kicked my shoes off, took my shirt off and let my hair down, I walked around the apartment half-n***d until I got an oversize shirt to cover me up and keep m cozy, I got my dinner ready, it's just a microwavable meal, I turned the TV on checking the last news, another reporter has gone missing, most of the streets has gone down, I rolled my eyes and turned the tv off, that was some shitty news.
