The whole place suddenly quietened. Dave shut his eyes emotionally pained.
Successfully hiding his fluctuating feelings, he opened them once again and stared towards Davina.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have overreacted and yelled at you." Saying that, he turned around and walked towards the exit.
Davina merely shrugged then lowered back her head onto the desktop screen.
.....
Dave got home to an empty house. His head suddenly felt heavy and hurriedly he took out a bottle of pills from his pocket and popped them into his mouth.
The headache was gone the same way it came.
He walked to his room and took out a box. Opening it, he took out a modern picture which seemed to be taken of recent. In it was a girl who smiled brightly at the camera, a happy twinkle in her eyes.
Three Years Ago
A hot blooded Dave walked into the police station. He walked towards a desk where a girl had her head lowered.
He stood over her and excitedly called out, "Vivian, we got a case"
Vivian who was trying to drift to sleep sprang up hearing the word 'case'.
"Where? What kind of case? What happened?" She asked frantically.
Dave grinned and took out a bag Vivian had no idea was behind his back. He opened it and took out a file, not too heavy and gently handed it to her.
Flipping through it, Vivian's eyes widened in shock.
The case was about a boy who died by jumping off his school's story building. Many folks believe that the boy committed suicide but a number of others refused to believe.
Because of their doubt concerning the death of the boy, they had brought the case to the station to be investigated.
"OMG! This is brutal Dave. Come on let's head to the school right now to inspect the scene" she said righteously. Without waiting for a reply from him, she grabbed her hand bag and stuffed the documents inside, then stormed out of the station.
The duo watched the surveillance camera and questioning the students. After everything, the two came to a tacit understanding of what was happening.
The boy who died didn't commit suicide. He was often bullied in school and one of the days, his bullies forced him to jump down the top of the school.
The duo didn't want to guess what the bullies hearts were made of. They gathered together their evidence and was ready to publish it during the week.
Days later, they were both called over by their superiors. Getting in, they were shocked to see the father of the boy who had murdered his fellow student.
Apparently, the man had come to force them to close the case and delete all possible evidnce.
At first the two were reluctant but after being coaxed and then threatened by their superiors to withdraw the case, Vivian and Dave, told the outside world that the boy who had died some days ago was as a result of suicide and not mother.
The mother of the boy who was killed fell into depression. She knew very well the cause of her son's death but because she was a poor widow she couldn't do anything about it. Even the masses refused to listen to her and made it seem like she was trying to extort the man's son by accusing him of murdering her son, which would definitely lead to her asking for a lot of monetary compensation.
After the case was closed down, Vivian couldn't keep on with the emotional mother of the boy who she said often cried to her in her sleep, so she left the police force and right until then, the two hadn't crossed paths again.
That incident made Dave believe his integrity wasn't worth it. If his superiors could disregard justice and integrity who was he, a junior, to try to remain upright.
Even until now, he would drop groceries outside the woman's door every week because he was too ashamed to face her.
After reminiscing on the sad experience, he laid flatly on the floor and slept off till the next morning.
When he woke up, he had his bathe and for the first time in three years, massaged his police badge gently.
He left around nine in the morning and headed to a grocery store. Maybe our of guilt or something, he spent a lot of time in the store picking virtually anything he seemed fit.
Satisfied with all he got, he wheeled the three trolleys to the counter and laid out all the items.
The salesman stared surprised at him. The man had gotten so many things. The salesman even doubted a family of three could finish them in a month.
"Your bill is $2115 sir" the man called out slowly, half believing and half doubting that the man would pay.
To his surprise Dave merely nodded, reached into his jacket and took out his car.
The salesman swiped the card, printed the receipt and handed it to him. Then bagged the various items and handed it over to him.
Dave being a strong man, held all the items in his hands and walked towards his garage and straight into his car.
He drove slowly towards the countryside. As usual, the place had the eerie silence enveloping it.
He killed his car's engine outside the house. He hesitated for a few minutes before opening the door. He took out all the groceries he got and walked towards the door.
"Knock knock knock!"
He raised his knuckles again about to knock when the door creaked open and a middle aged woman stood peeking at him.
Seeing the familiar brand of groceries in his hands, her eyes widened in disbelief. Her face which was initially full of suspicion relaxed and she smiled a little happily: "It's you...I've finally know who you are after three years of ghosting me"
Dave was too ashamed to say anything, he stretched forward the bags in his hands saying, "Ma'am please have this, I'm a little late to work this morning and I'll be back to accompany you when I close''
Then he turned around and walked out. Seeing the word, 'FBI' written at the back of his jacket, the woman's eyes gleamed and for once since the past three years, she smiled wholeheartedly.
The man however stopped after getting to his car and glanced around. He could feel someone's eyes on him but couldn't wrap his fingers around who it was or where it was coming from.
With a shrug, he got into his car. Only then did a man walk out behind the woman's house lighting a cigarette.
