"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come." ~ Joseph Campbell Chapter Three Davina was walking down the baby aisle at Target the next day with no plan to buy anything but to browse. She was only five weeks pregnant and she kept telling herself that it was too early to buy anything especially since the chances of her having a miscarriage could still happen but that didn't stop her from going and looking at all the cute clothes and blankets. Davina wanted nothing more than to have her first child be a little girl, all the cute little dresses and bows she could dress her daughter in and all the cute hair designs once she got older, she loved the idea of playing dress up and dolls with her daughter. She thought raising a girl would be easier especially since she herself was a girl and she could raise her and be her friend at the same time. Davina wouldn't mind having a boy either, she loved the flannels and dark washed jeans that the baby boy clothings had but the idea of having a boy scared her more than it did than having a baby girl, for a girl she knew the basics it was different for the boys, she never had a younger sibling and all the cousins she's had were all girls so the dudes of a boy frightened her but so did a girl. Hell, having a baby in general scared the hell out of her. Davina picked up a simple grey blanket that was unisex, it had white elephants on it and was super soft to the touch. She ran her right hand down the front of it loving how soft it felt and smiled as she looked at the price tag. 15.75. Holy s**t, why so damn much? Davina held the blanket to her chest chewing on her bottom lip something that she did out of pure habit when she's thinking or anxious, something that her therapist also reminded her every time she went to her sessions during her high school years that it was a form of self harm. Davina told herself that she was only looking and that she didn't need anything quiet yet but she was loving how soft the blanket was and the little elephants that decorated the blanket were adorable and couldn't help but slightly want it for her baby, it worked as a unisex so whether her baby ended up being a girl or boy they could enjoy the blanket and if they don't like it then Davina could enjoy it for herself. Liking her decision, Davina continued down the aisle looking at all that was offered, she grabbed a set of plain light yellow and white bibs for five dollars and placed them on top of the blanket figuring if she's already buying a blanket she might as well buy a thing of bibs. Next, she looked over at the pacifiers her eyes landing and on the simple green rubber ones that the hospital gave when the baby is first born and picks one of them from the shelf placing it with the items in her arms. This shopping trip was supposed to be a classic window shopping trip but quickly turned into a spending spree when she made a quick stop to the baby section. "Davina?" Davina jumped at the sound of Petra's voice, her body tensing up as she plastered a fake smile as she turned around facing the blonde woman. "Petra! Hey, how are you?" "I'm good," Petra smiled, Davina watched as Petra brought a manicured hand down to her stomach where a very small barely noticeable bump was. Petra looks at where Davina's gaze was before laughing. "Oh yeah, I'm pregnant if you didn't already see my i********: post." Davina awkwardly laughed nodding her head. "Yeah, I think I saw that. You're what, three months?" "I just turned two months actually." Davina looks taken back as she looked at Petra's stomach again and frowned. Davina was almost two months and she barely had a bump forming it was barely hard. Plus her due date was placed in December three months after hers. There was no way she was two months if she was due in September, unless she was pregnant with twins. "I thought you were due in September." Davina said bringing the items in her arms closer to her chest as Petra nods her head. "Yeah this baby is just more growing than usual. The doctor says it's a super baby." Davina nodded her head pursing her lips but didn't comment on the situation. Petra looks at the items in Davinas hands and tilts her head to the side before her eyes widen. "Oh my goodness! Those weren't for me were they?" Petra asked bringing her hands to her mouth as she stared at Davina in shock. Davina furrows her eyebrows looking down at her items in her arms before back up at Petra who was already walking closer to Davina her hands touching the blanket a sigh escaping her mouth as she takes the blanket out of her hands. "My gosh that's adorable and super soft!" Yeah, that's why I'm getting it dumb b***h. "Yeah, that's why I picked it out." Davina awkwardly laughed watch as Petra ran her hands down the blanket with a smile. "The color really isn't my thing but it's the thought that counts I guess," Petra laughs to which Davina raised an eyebrow at her. "I'm sorry, but I wasn't actually going to be gifting that to you Petra," Petra stopped laughing and looked up from the blanket with a confused look. "Then why are you buying a baby blanket? Is one of your friends pregnant?" Davina shook her head grabbing the blanket from Petra. "No, someone else I know is pregnant and I was gifting it to them." Petra nodded her head before awkwardly laughing. "Of course, that was silly of me to even assume such a thing. After all I am pregnant with your ex-boyfriends baby." She says with a wave of her hand brushing her embarrassment off. "Right," Davina awkwardly said averting her attention anywhere but Petra. God, could this get anymore awkward? Davina cleared her throat before putting up a fake smile. "Well, it was lovely seeing you Petra but I really got to go," "Of course! Tell your friend congratulations for me!" Petra exclaimed as Davina just gave her a closed mouth smile and nodded her head. Davina quickly walks down the aisle wanting nothing more than to have the floor swallow her up and take her to another section of the store away from Petra and her b***h ass. "Oh Davina before I forget!" Petra called out stopping her in her tracks. "Yes?" "Make sure you bring a type of alcohol to the dinner tonight, your mother already told me that you'll be attending." Petra laughed. She did what! "Of course, I wouldn't miss it for the world," Davina hissed out through a smile her right eye slightly twitching from annoyance. Before Petra could say anything else she quickly spun on her heel and left the baby section of the store and to the self checkout her mood instantly changing of one to anger. ༺═──────────────═༻ Davina stormed into her parents house thirty minutes later her mind replaying Petra's words over and over again as she pushed past the maids and servants that walked the halls of her parents place. Davina was seeing red and nothing else as she barged into the library where she knew her mother would be reading. "Hello Davina darling, how are you feeling?" Her mother asked as soon as she barged into the liberate the large oak doors banging against the walls chasing the walls to shake slightly from the force. "I was feeling excellent until I ran into the b***h from hell," Davina spat walking over to the chair that was empty that was across from her mother near the fireplace. Katalyn hummed as she flipped the page of her book not even bothering to look up from the pages. "And I take it that the run in wasn't pleasant?" Davina scoffed crossing her arms over her chest. "No, it wasn't. Why didn't you tell me that we were going to dinner with the Russos," Davina spat their last name like it was venom. Katalyn sighed finally closing the book that she was reading making sure to save the page she was on with her bookmark before folding her hands together and resting them on top of the hard cover. "I was going to tell you tonight actually when you came over for dinner." Davina rolled her eyes. "You know how I feel about them mom and to put me in this place especially since you know how it went down the other day with Elio hurts." Katalyn sighed giving her daughter a soft smile as she placed her book on the couch beside her. "Davina, I'm sorry but this was before I knew of the situation and as much as I would not like to ago we already agreed to go in advance so our spots have been reserved and so has our food. I'm not going to waste that money, money doesn't grow on trees you know." Davina groaned out placing her hands over her face. "Can't somebody else go for me then? Or can't you cancel." "I'm sorry Davina, your father and I already tried to. Don't stress about it okay? It's not good for the baby." Davina sighed taking a deep breath. Her mother was right, Davina shouldn't be stressing over Petra and the dinner it wasn't good for the baby and she didn't want anything bad to happen she'll just suck up her pride and go to this dinner pretending like nothing was wrong and after tonight she'll cut all ties with them and focus on doing what's best for her and her baby. Standing up from the chair she occupied she tucks a strand of her brown hair behind her ear and smiled. "I'm going to be calling Maria and Alice." She doesn't wait for her mother to say anything as she walks out of the library and towards her old bedroom that she uses when she spends the night here or for when she needs to get ready for certain events like the dinner tonight. "Hey!" Maria's and Alice's escapes Davina's phone as soon as she enters her bedroom a sigh escaping from Davina's lips as she shuts her bedroom door close. "Guys, you will not believe what just happened to me." Davina groaned as she flops onto her bed. "What?" Alice asked looking down at her nails as she painted them a pretty dark green color. "I ran into Petra at Target today and she's claiming she's two months pregnant." "What the hell," Maria said confused. "I thought she is due in September." "Yeah, I thought so too and when I said that she just laughed and said that the baby was growing more than usual." Alice laughed throwing her head back. "Ha! What did I tell you the b***h is lying!" "You don't know that Alice, she could be having twins and she's just bigger than average every body is different." Alice scoffed as she looked at Davina through the phone screen. "Davina, did she look big to you?" Davina shrugged her shoulders picking at the strings of the holes in her jeans. "I don't know, I mean Im only six weeks and if she's saying she's two months that means she's only two weeks ahead of me and I don't even have that big of a stomach." "How much bigger is it?" Maria asks tilting her head to the side. "I'm not sure, I mean it was noticeable until after she placed her hand on her stomach." Alice scoffed again to which Maria shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know what to say to that there could be thousands of reasons on why her stomach is a little bit larger." Davina shrugged her shoulders looking down at the holes in her pants not looking at her phone screen. "I have a reasoning, she's lying." Davina rolled her eyes. "Alice just because you hate the woman doesn't mean you have to accuse her of lying about being pregnant." "Sure I can!" Davina sighed not wanting to fight Alice on this. The FaceTime call was silent for a moment before Alice starts singing. "Why the f**k you lying," Alice mutters. "Why you always lying." Davina rolled her eyes but laughs nothing less. "Anyway, continuing on that wasn't the only thing that happened. Turns out I'm enjoying a lovely dinner with the Russo family." The milk Maria had just put in her milk came shooting out of her nose and onto her phone screen causing her part of the FaceTime to go blurry, a look of disgust makes it's way onto Alice's face not too sure if it's from the news that Davina shared or if it was from the milk boogers that decorated Maria's screen, either way Alice looked like Rose from 90 Day Fiancé. "How the hell did that happen?" Alice asked not taking her eyes away from Maria who was wiping her screen not too quietly. "Turns out my mother accepted the invitation before she found out about my pregnancy." Alice shook her head. "I'm sorry Davina, do you want us to come? I'm sure my parents got an invitation and agreed to go they love to talk about themselves, I can bring Maria as my plus one." Davina gave Alice a grateful smile. "Could you? I really don't want Elio to corner me or something," Alice nods her head as she changed her screen to say pause informing the two girls that she was going to quickly message her mother if she was indeed in fact invited to the dinner that Petra was hosting. "I can't believe you ran into Petra at Target of all places," Maria said shaking her head. "I thought she only shopped at high class stores." Davina laughed shrugging her shoulders. It's true, it was a shock to running into Petra today when Davina first met Petra she made it clear to everybody that she met that she only shopped at stores like Gucci, Loui Vuitton, and Nordstrom so seeing her at Target was a surprise because to most people that lived the rich life Target wasn't on that category. "Who knows maybe she's wanting to change." Davina shrugged her shoulders running her hands through her brown hair. Maria just hums as she starts picking at her fluffy blanket in her lap. Davina watches her as the sound of Alice coming back on is heard as she has a frown on her face. "I'm sorry Davina, but my parents declined the invitation because my dad has a surgery." "That's okay Alice, I'll just avoid the couple as much as I can." Alice and Maria give the girl a sad smile. Davina knew it was too good to be true when Alice said that her parents got invited, it wasn't because her parents weren't like able or anything like that, her parents were actually really sweet, it was just that fate seemed like it wanted to make Davina's life a living hell until she couldn't take it anymore and broke down crying. "Changing the subject, did I tell you guys that I found out how dolphins have s*x?" Alice said grinning at the screen causing Davina and Maria to share a look. ༺═──────────────═༻ Davina made sure that she wore comfortable shoes to the dinner tonight because her feet were beginning to hurt if she stood on them for too long. She decided to wear a maroon cold shoulder v-neck midi dress, which thankfully didn't show the small bump that was beginning to form from her uterus,, and a pair of black flats. Her hair was placed in a messy ponytail and her make up was smokey and elegant. While she was getting ready she stayed on FaceTime with Alice and Maria because the two girls were taking her mind off the dinner and took the stress away which she was thankful for. Currently, Davina was in the back seat of her parents red 911 Turbo S Cabriolet Porsche that her father drove because according to him, 'Just because I just turned fifty-five it doesn't mean I can't ride in style,'. Davina loved this car and she loved spending time with her parents she just wished that they would have declined the invitation even if it was before she announced her pregnancy but her family were selfless and loved supporting people no matter what the history between them were they had little to no enemies and were adorned by everybody they met, something that is a blessing but also a curse. Davina's parents were too sweet and had hearts of gold that no matter who they met they always seemed to find something about them that they liked and it always took something big for them to stop liking that person, you would think that after everything that happened with Elio that her parents would look more differently towards the man but that was incorrect, Elio and Mark still talked and played golf once a month and Katalyn and Petra still invited each other to events. It bothered Davina but she didn't let it bother her because it wasn't something that she should be worried about her parents were adults and could make their own decisions she just hopes that they respect her wishes when she tells them that she doesn't want to be involved with them anymore and that after tonight she was cutting all ties with the couple, which they thankfully agreed to. When they finally pulled up to the mansion that The Russo family lived in, Mark parks his car in front of the valet boy throwing him his keys as Katalyn and Davina exit the vehicle. "Make sure that you don't scratch anything boy, I will inspect the car before I leave tonight," Mark informs the boy pointing his left index finger at him to which the boy nodded his head fiercely. "Yes sir," Mark smiled and patted the man on the shoulder before taking his wife's hand and started walking through the open doors. Davina looked up at the house with a sigh before following her parents inside with her head down low. Soft classical music was playing in the background as people stood around with either a glass of champagne in hand or some scotch. A waiter with a tray of champagne in hand offered Davina a glass but she declined and excused herself when she spotted her parents talking to an old couple next to the fireplace in the sitting room. She had a smile on her face as she neared them making sure that she didn't bump into anybody and make a fool of herself. "Ah Davina, this is Arthur and Jessica Miller, they are retired lawyers that worked for Elio's company when his father ran it." Mark said introducing her to the elderly couple who smiled fondly at her. "Hello," "Are you not drinking tonight?" Jessica asked tilting her head to the side as she looked at Davina as she shook her head no in response. "No, I'm afraid I'm not much of a drinker." Jessica laughed sipping from her champagne. "I wish I could say the same about me," Davina smiled folding her hands in front of her and looked around the room as her parents and The Miller's began talking about politics and the upcoming election, both couples coming from the Democratic Party so there wasn't any intense arguments happening which was good because Davina wouldn't know what to do if a fight broke out. Davina couldn't see any sign of Elio or Petra which was good, she didn't want to see either of them she hoped that she could make the whole night without seeing them but given the fact that this was their dinner party that they were hosting that wouldn't happen it was just a matter of time before one of them decided to show their face to Davina and her family she just hoped that when they did Davina wouldn't be anywhere near her parents. The sound of glass being tapped echoes through the room causing all conversation to subside and all attention focused on Petra who was standing on the top of the stairs wearing a white dress that went down to her ankles and showed her pregnant stomach and her hair styled in a perfect bun, a glass and spoon in hand. "I wanted to thank every single one of you for coming tonight and celebrating Elio's merger with a company in Japan," Petra said placing a hand on her stomach. "I am very proud of you honey and I'm so glad you're the father of my child." She said smiling down at Elio who was standing near the doorway next to his two brothers. Petra cleared her throat and looked back at the small crowd of people. "I thought about sharing this sometime alone but I actually felt like with everybody here that we love and consider as family would be much better, today I went to my very first doctors appointment since I found out I was pregnant," she laughed. First appointment? She's just barely going to the doctor!? How the hell does she know she's due in September then? "The doctor shocked me when she informed me that I was indeed pregnant but she shocked me even more when she informed me that I was farther along than I suspected turns out that I'm actually five months pregnant, we conceived in August, and we are due on April twenty-third!" Around of applause was heard as everybody congratulated Petra and Elio on the newfound information but Davina didn't clap. December, November, October, September, August- Those dates didn't make since, Petra was gone the whole month of August. Davina knew this because that whole month her and Elio were at her place meaning that either Petra wasn't pregnant and she was faking it or Petra was pregnant but the baby wasn't Elio's. Well s**t, Alice may actually be right about something for once. ༺═──────────────═༻
