Chapter 17 Shane calls Mercury

Shane’s P.O.V

I couldn’t believe that it had taken me three years to find my mate, but I had and she was perfect. Her name was Noel. She had left to become a dentist and although I knew that we didn’t really need a dentist in the pack, maybe we did, but what if someone had a toothache and needed treatment? This woman was beautiful and we mated under the full moon when we were camping. The next day we returned to her pack, needing to speak to the Alpha about us being mates.

“Congratulations, I am glad that you both found each other, but why are you telling me?” Alpha Chuck asked, confused, but also pleased for both of us.

“Well, we will be leaving your pack and returning to mine, so we wanted you to be the first to know.” I replied and Alpha Chuck frowned.

“Oh, I must admit I will be sad to see you both go, in fact I was going to offer you the position of my Beta. As you know my Beta died in battle and I have seen how you have trained and learned quickly from it. I hope that you will at least give it some thought before you make the decision to leave. I would be pleased to have you join here and take your place in my ranks.” Alpha Chuck said, shocking me. I knew about his Beta dying, but I had no idea that he was going to offer me the position.

“Thank you, I will think about it and give you my answer by the end of the day.” I replied and he nodded. Noel and I left the Alpha’s office and returned to her house, which was just a short distance from the pack house. Noel went to the kitchen to begin cooking dinner and I stood in the living room, looking around at everything while I thought about Alpha Chuck’s offer. Noel had everything here, her family, her friends, her home and her job, whereas I had no family back in my pack. Sure, I had my friends and I could still keep in touch with them, but I lived in the guard house with the others, so I really didn’t have much in the way of material things. I thought I would have to think long and hard about this, but the more I thought about it the easier the decision became. I heard Noel humming to a song in the kitchen and I took another look around, making my mind up once and for all. I dialled Alpha Mercury’s number and waited for him to answer the phone, knowing that I had to tell him first.

“Hello, how can I help you?” Mercury asked as he answered the phone and I realised that he didn’t have my new number listed in his contacts because I had changed it while I was here.

“Hello, Alpha Mercury, it’s Shane.” I replied, hoping that after two years he would remember who I was.

“Shane, how are you? Did you find your mate?” Mercury asked and I smiled from ear to ear.

“Yes, yes I have and she is perfect, her name is Noel. I just wanted to call to tell you that I will be staying with her pack. The White Wolf Moon pack. I’m going to be the Alpha’s Beta.” I replied, hoping he wasn’t going to be mad.

“Congratulations, that is truly great news and I am happy for you. Listen, while I have you on the phone there is something that I need to ask you and it's very important. Where did you see the woman that looked like Cheyenne?” Mercury asked and I shook my head. He had asked me the question that I had forgotten about so long ago and now that he had asked I really didn’t want to tell him the answer.

“What about Holly?” I asked, worried about her and what could have happened now that he knew there was a possibility of Cheyenne being alive.

“Holly and I are still together and no matter what we will be and are rock solid.” Mercury replied and I sighed. I know that Cheyenne was his first mate, but he has Holly now, so what's to say that he won’t leave her to have Cheyenne back? But then again he loves Holly, so what's to say that he will want Cheyenne after all this time? Either way she is or rather was his mate and he has a right to know this, to make his own decision.

“Fine, but if you hurt Holly then I am going to come back and kick your ass.” I said and heard him chuckle. We both know that I couldn’t beat him, but I would try my hardest.

“I promise that I won’t hurt Holly in any way. Now will you tell me.” Mercury replied and I knew that he would stick to his word.

“The Gator Tail restaurant. The woman I saw was the owner of the restaurant and I saw her by the dock that was being built. She was showing someone around, so I didn’t approach her, but Mercury, I swear she looked just like her, like Cheyenne.” I said, telling him everything.

“Thank you, I know that it must have been hard for you, but I would also like to thank you for thinking of Holly in all of this. I don’t hold any of this against you and I never will. Good luck with your mate and new life.” Mercury replied and then hung up the phone. I looked up at Noel and smiled.

“Well, I’m joining your pack, baby and I’m going to be the Beta.” I said and she jumped into my arms. I knew right there and then that I had made the right decision.

“I’ll be back in a sec, I’m just going to let Alpha Chuck know, save him waiting for an answer.” I said, kissing her before I left the house and made my way back to the Alpha’s office. I knocked on the door and opened it, popping my head inside.

“Alpha Chuck, I have decided to take you up on your offer of joining your pack and becoming the Beta.” I said and he smiled brightly, getting up from his seat and inviting me into the office. He shook my hand and then had me sign some paperwork, making me an official member of the pack and also the new Beta. We shook hands and I suddenly realised that I was going to need more things now that I was going to be staying here, so I would have to go shopping at some point to get everything I needed. I left Alpha Chuck’s office and made my way back to Noel’s house, but the whole time I was thinking about this massive love triangle that was Mercury, Cheyenne and Holly. I really hoped that Mercury didn’t end up hurting Holly, but something told me that this was going to be hard for all of them.

Mercury’s P.O.V

It had been three years since Shane had left to go find his mate and then I suddenly got a call from him, telling me that he had found her and was joining her pack as the new Beta. I knew of the pack and knew about what happened to the Beta during a battle, so I was happy that he was taking on the role because he would make an excellent Beta. I was sitting in my office and had the phone on loudspeaker, so that Holly, who was sitting on my lap, could hear everything that was being said between us. After he told me the news of his mate and him leaving our pack I looked at Holly and she nodded in agreement, wanting nothing more than to put this whole thing to rest and that’s when I asked him about Cheyenne. Holly and I were both a little surprised that she owned the restaurant Gator Tail because we had been there for a family meal a little over three years ago and I never once smelled her scent. We all agreed to go back there again, but it never happened because none of us felt like it at the time. When Shane threatened to kick my ass if I hurt Holly I could help feel amused, but also proud that he would do such a thing for her, knowing that he would lose against me. He had balls and it was one of the things I admired about him, he always stood up for what was right. I ended the phone call with Shane after wishing him good luck and thanking him for the information, but when I looked up I saw the tears streaming down Holly’s face. I shook my head as I held her closer, knowing exactly what she was thinking.

“Holly, it’s going to be okay. We will both go when we are both ready and as of right now, I’m not ready and I know that you aren’t either. At least we both now know where we have to go in order to find out, but I’m not leaving you. It’s been twenty four years since she passed and I have finally gotten over her death. I love you, you are not going anywhere and neither am I. if this is true then we will work through it together, okay, but right now it’s just us and the kids.” I said, kissing her forehead and wiping her tears away.
