Chapter 10
Patients, some in hospital gowns, some in pajamas, began arriving. Staff rolled others into the room in wheel chairs. Visitors took their places among the patients. Doctors and nurses stood along the walls, in their scrubs and white uniforms, ready to answer pages and rush off at a moment’s notice. Herbie walked to the front of the cafeteria. Karen motioned for Suzie to come to the door and watch.
“My name is Herbie Bourne, and I’m the youth leader at the Fries Methodist Church. As most of you know, Fries has had a hard time the last month, and the thoughts of a Merry Christmas seemed far away. We didn’t think things could get any worse, but yesterday they did.
