The sound of strong wind howling in my ears woke me up. The sky was dimming and dark clouds hung over the sky. I estimated it was in the evening since the sun was just preparing to sink making the weather look even more terrifying .My father and brother were hurrying up the horses that seemed like they wanted to fall down any minute. I jumped off the cart to relieve them of my additional weight.
We were on a bare land with little or no plants at all. Just ridges , rocks...very huge rocks and extremely bumpy terrain. The area made it so hard for our horses to move. A step forward really proved much difficult with the wind aiding in pushing us back. The slow motion of our horses made us remain almost at the furthest end of the caravan. If I remember correctly, we were among the first in line. I shook my head not getting why we became among the last ones. I hoped on the rocks and went to stand beside Jack who was pulling one of the horses.
" You are up?" Jack asked grunting as he pulled
" Need some help?" I asked. Father darted me a sideway glance.
" You can poke the horses' backside while you sit on the cart" father joked. Jack chuckled.
I shook my head then picked a stick from the ground. I strutted behind the horses and used the stick to roughly poke the horses' thighs.
I laughed loudly the next instant. Though the wind carried most of the sound away, I really laughed. The horses jerked foward with a start when I angered them. It was like they were energized again by my actions. Their movement made father and Jack jump to the sides to avoid the two horses that rushed foward fast.
" Why did you do that?" Jack glared
" Father told me to" I shrugged innocently smiling
Father grunted as he dusted his pants
" At least we got off the rough patch"
Further ahead, there was a large commotion happening. The caravan had stopped and since I wasn't that tall to look ahead, I climbed on top of our cart .
" Wow" I widened my glinting eyes . The largest high wall I had ever seen in my seven years of life. Even no city in Neval kingdom had a wall as high as this. The wall was so high and so long it extended miles on the ends. I really couldn't wait to see the inside of it.
Soldiers with dazzling silver armors stood along the wall with spears, some with swords and most of them with bows and arrows. A blue cloth with a spear's image embroidered on it was hung over the large gate that was the entrance of the walled city. I completely forgot about the commotion that was happening on the gate and the weather that was getting worse.
" I'm in love with the wall" I said subconsciously
" that was actually the same reaction I had when I first came here" jack said in a bored way
" Kiriath city of Donob kingdom, the city of Lord Jephtham." Father said " wait until you get inside"
" Why are people not getting inside?" I frowned after a large drop of rain fell on my head.
The commotion by the gate was getting even stronger but the gates weren't even opening.
" They won't open it until tomorrow morning" father said bitterly then motioned me to climb down so that he would cover the grains.
" We would be rained upon, surely, they have to have some little bit of humanity left in them" I grumbled unwillingly. The last thing I didn't want was getting wet on a cold open night. The rain won't even allow us to make fire.
The dark clouds were even gathering rapidly which was already dampening my mood . Farmers were scrambling to cover their grains and farm produce first to protect them from the elements. I could even spot the soldiers that were atop the high wall retreating back inside one at a time. They didn't even appear to be bothered by us.
Father dragged me close to him and covered me with some leather clothing. It was so small that it barely fit the three of us so he just handed it over to me.
It didn't take long for the rain to start dropping on our heads. The clothing that father gave me was dampened in less than a minute leaving me no better than the rest of the farmers. It rained for a very long time while we stood on our ground braving the rough elements. Every second and minute of it I was getting even angrier . My robe was stuck unto me and my hair made my head feel very heavy. I even lost count of the minutes and hours the rain and cold ravaged our bodies.
