Gloomy morning

565 Words
In the very cold humid morning air, farmers scrambled to get in line so as to be registered into the city. Registration meant that a farmer would have to pay to enter the city, ridiculous. After being hit by the rain for the whole night , I would never remove a penny from my pocket let alone a coin. The city should be paying us for the inhospitality, that's what I thought but here we were, scrambling to get into a city that let us fend outside by ourselves in the cold. I sulked as I helped Jack move our cart and horses towards father who had managed to get a spot at the middle of the long line. I was trembling the whole moment, I never missed fire as I was missing it at the moment. My robe was wet and it clung to my skin like glue, everyone was in that state. I was so hungry and angry that our bread was thoroughly dampened and was no longer edible. Most of our grains had survived the rain and were just cold compared to other farmers who had extreme bad luck. I didn't even want to speak anymore, I was pissed off. After long hours of waiting in the cold, our turn reached. It was almost midday " Name" the soldier asked in a bored way. I could see his blood shot eyes from under the helmet he wore. Maybe due to overdrinking late into the night, he reeked of stale beer. " Greg Kalder. I'm a f… " " A farmer, you all are. p*****t?" the soldier snapped rudely. He roughly wrote on a large piece of paper then extended his warmly gloved hand. Father fumbled in his pockets then handed him two coins that were a bit rusty but still valuable. " I see three of you old man" the soldier said " He's only seven...you can surely make this one exception" father said with a bitter smile . He nudged me to smile but the long face that was plastered on my head wasn't going anywhere any time soon. " Unless he is an animal he will have to pay or else you will have to sell him to the slavers instead " the soldier said without emotion. Before I even spoke which I was infact really planning to do, father nodded to Jack who in turn gave the soldier another silver coin. The soldier grunted in response then motioned us to move along. " I personally think we should eat these grains instead of selling them to these dignified arrogant rich unhospitable peacocks" I spat angrily wishing I could just get every soldier and lash them continuously until they come to their right minds. " Then we won't have money to pay for the yearly taxes for our plot of land" father smiled. I was actually taken aback as to why he was taking these things so easily, he wasn't even trying to fight the injustice that was being done to the poor. He was even smiling, but he was my father and I was genetically and emotionally made to love him whatever may. We even had to pay for the land that gave them food to eat? that was just very much insane .I scoffed then decided to shut up my mouth as we entered the big city.
