Olivia rolled her eyes, looking at Rex over her shoulder proudly. “I remember what you used to tell me, Rex. That you have a hard time processing your emotions, especially after losing someone so close.” She stepped around Maya, her hand lingering on his arm. He flinched away from her touch. “The offer earlier still stands if you need to get some aggression out.”
“Excuse me?” Maya retorted sharply, fist ready to grant Olivia a black eye for her promiscuous behavior. “What offer?”
Olivia ignored her, touching Rex arm again before he stepped away, still caught off guard. “Call me.” She measured Maya pompously. “I know she’s not giving you what you need, so don’t hesitate.”
And with that, she walked back to her friends before Maya had the sense to yank her back by her hair. If they weren’t in a surveillance filled facility, she’d flip Olivia on her backside and have her in a headlock within seconds, begging for mercy.
Once gone, Maya glared at Rex. “You could have said something.”
He put up his hands in surrender, startled. “Like what? You know Olivia just came over here to make you jealous.”
Her cheeks turned a reddish tint. “I wasn’t…”
Rex couldn’t contain his chuckle at the cute face she presented before pulling her close. “We’re together now. It’s alright to be jealous. I get jealous when other guys stare at you.”
She scoffed. “Me? No other guy but you stare at me.”
He took her head, deciding to head out the store as he gestured to towards the guys from earlier, staring by the shoe section. “I beg to differ. You just don’t notice them.”
I do, she thought. Just not in that way.
“But what did Olivia mean by you having a hard time processing your emotions?”
Leading her to an empty table in the food court, he slid a seat out for her. “Seat down, please.”
“Am I going to have a heart attack when I hear this?”
Nonetheless, she took a seat and he sat down across from her, mentally preparing himself for the talk he’s been dreading. “You know I had a...reputation before you came along, right?” Her eyes said “obviously” without speaking the words, forcing him to continue. “I’m don’t know how to phrase it, so I’m just gonna say it. I have a hard time controlling my emotions, something I get from my dad, and I used to call girls to...sleep with, so I wouldn’t have to deal with...whatever I was feeling.”
The bickering of other people filled the silence around them, Maya sitting back to process his words more thoroughly. Of course, she knew Rex had a very extended s****l past but she didn’t know he did it to avoid...himself. Although they’ve only known each other for a couple of months, there were still things about him she didn’t know. And want to explore so much more about him besides what governmental files stated. She wanted to know the real him. That lingering feeling of jealousy still resided in her. His Uncle Leo’s death was probably the hardest heartache he ever suffered and yet…
“Did you take her offer?”
He shook his head without hesitation. “Hell no.” He leaned forwards on the table, gesturing for her to give him her hands which she did. “I have you now. All I want is you. Olivia is miles in the past and never coming back again, understood?”
She nodded, feeling a sense of relief in her chest. “You didn’t even contemplate it?”
He gave her a smirk. “Maya, I have my dream girl by my side. Why would I think of having anyone else in my bed but you.” The last few words wrapped around her body like satin, electric tinkles crawling up her skin. He brought her hand to his lips, kissing them tenderly while his eyes awoke with passionate hunger. “I’ve wanted you since the moment I laid eyes on you.” The hungry beast soon evaporated from his eyes. “But I know you’re not ready for all that.”
Her head dropped, a glimmer of guilt materializing. Truefully, whenever they kissed, the thought would linger in the back of her mind. What did he look like completely naked? What would it feel like for him to touch her entire body? How would he fit? A knot formed in the pit of her gut, crossing her legs beneath the table. Her heart sat heavily in her chest. “Um, Rex, I’ve...how are you dealing with the emotions if you’re not...messing around?”
That familiar wave of depression hit his features. “I won’t lie. It’s been hard. Somedays, I wake up and think he’s still around. And when I realize he’s not...I feel like I’m going to lose my mind.” He squeezed her hand gently, the cloud within him departing bit by bit. Her eyes seemed to sparkle to him. “Then you call and make things easier.”
Maya’s heart tightened at the realization that she was helping him. For weeks, she felt as though she were hurting him. She knew too much about his Uncle’s passing and to witness the grief each day only made her guilt worsen. But to know she was unconsciously helping ease his pain, made her smile. “I’m glad to be of help.”
“Oh, the love birds are already here!” Remy called, approaching their table. Gabe followed behind with a bookstore bag in his hands. Rex kissed her hands one last time before turning his attention to his friends. “We gonna be playing some video games tonight!”
LATER THAT EVENING
“I’m heading home, bro,” Remy informed him, the moon already grazing the sky. They were lounging on the sofa in Rex’s pool house, already finished with dinner hours before. “I’m already past curfew. Kicking your ass is exhausting!”
Rex smacked his lips, slamming his controlling on the counter. “Whatever. That’s because Gabe kept telling you the buttons for each attack.”
“To be fair,” Gabe interjected, standing up, “it’s better than watching Remy press whatever and get killed over and over.”
He watched both Remy and Gabe head towards the door while he wrapped an arm around Maya at sitting at his side. “But those are the best wins,” Rex jeered.
They said their goodbyes, Gabe hesitating by the doorway, giving Maya a look Rex couldn’t decipher. He’d noticed Gabe and Maya were closer than he thought since they began dating, usually going home together. A piece of him knew there was nothing between them but that piece was insignificant to the envy growing inside. Even from a look, they knew what the other was thinking without words.
Gabe closed the door behind him, leaving Rex and Maya alone together. “You want to try to beat me at Mario?” Rex asked, wiggling his brows. “I might go easy on you for a kiss.” She stayed silent in his arms. “What’s that matter?”
“Nothing.”
He turned to her so they were face to face. “Maya, please, tell me what’s running through that brilliant mind of yours?”
His hazel green eyes were pleading with her. But how could she tell him she was thinking about growing intimate? They’ve only been dating for three weeks. Yet, with her career, she knew each day with him was precious. She could never admit it to her squad members, but this mission meant so much more to her now. Rex meant more to her than just another operation. She wanted to feel every part of him. However, she couldn’t differentiate if it was from the way he made her feel, the guilt of Leo, or both. Then her mind spiraled to Olivia and Jenna. What if she couldn’t satisfy him? What if..?
Rex broke through her train of thought. “Maya.”
She sighed, leaning closer to him. His body reacted with a jolt, inching closer. “I was just thinking about earlier at the mall.”
He frowned, caressing her cheek. “Hermosa, I already told you I only want you.”
A nervous flutter flowed between her legs, inching closer until their lips barely touched. Rex froze at her boldness. “And I only want you too.”
Before she could have a moment of hesitance, he drew her closer, savoring the taste of her lips. Whenever he felt her lips on his, every muscle in his body yearned to ravish her. A fiery sensation coursed through the both of them, Maya’s arms wrapping around his shoulders. This was the moment. He deepened the kiss, his body leaning over her until her head laid upon the arm of the sofa. His lips trailed down her jaw and her slender neck, her heart rumbling to his delight.
Hot and heavy, he placed a hand on her chest, feeling the softness through her shirt. When the tiniest of moans escaped her lips, all restraint left him. The monster within him that craved every ounce of her being ripped through him. Her body was calling his name with urgency. Breathlessly, he captured her waist, surprising her as he picked her up in his arms. Heading to the darkened bedroom, she gasped when he placed her on the bed, continuing to kiss.
Unable to see him in the darkness brought extra arousal she’d never conceived, his body resting within hers. A warm, inviting emotion dwelled within the pit of her gut. “Rex…” she moaned.
He slipped off his shirt, pressing kisses in the nap of her neck. Her fingertips grazed against his muscles, his skin hot in her hands. Spiraling downwards, he lifted her shirt to feel her mounds he’d only dreamed of. She felt like heaven. Her caramel skin smelt like sweet mint, soft to the touch as he lowered a hand. She could feel her fingers through his hair, a growl boiling in the back of his throat. He wanted to please her and himself, inching further to him most treasured region.
Then she felt it.
The snap of him unbuttoning her jeans brought a wave of trepidation, her heart panicking at the awareness. Maybe she wasn’t ready for all this; to give him that piece of her so soon. Her body shifted beneath him. This only fueled his movement, his lips finding hers in the darkness. They were lulling her into submission. His kisses always made her feel passionate and weak in his arms. His fingers found the hem of her panties just when she found her strength to push him away.
“Rex!” Sitting up breathlessly, she pressed against his shoulders to move. “Rex, stop, please!”
Panting, he sat up on the bed. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s…” She crawled away from him, fixer her shirt. “I...I don’t know...about this.” Scrambling off the bed, she found her footing towards the door. “I thought I was ready.” Burning tears formed in the rim of her eyes, thankful of the darkness. “But I’m...I’m not ready. I’m sorry.”
“Maya!” She opened the door, slipping out, and closing it behind her. “Maya!”
