Jonas smiled when Francesca came in to tell him she was going out with her brother, but Elizabeth immediately felt awkward about being left there without him.
"She hasn't been out here since we first arrived," he offered an explanation Elizabeth hadn't asked for and she smiled awkwardly.
She wasn't sure whether he was referring to the fact she hadn't been able to go out into her new territory as a wolf, or if she had hidden herself away in the house for months; it could have been either.
"That must have been difficult for her; she goes out as a wolf more than most people I have met."
She hoped it was the right thing to say, but Jonas was too busy fussing over the baby again to be too bothered by Elizabeth anyway.
"She was worth it," he leaned over the crib Selene had lent them to stroke the infants cheek, and Elizabeth realized he wasn't really talking to her.
"Do you think you'll have another?" Elizabeth asked absentmindedly and Jonas turned away from Saga to answer her.
"She's not even a month old yet - I think it's a little soon to be discussing that, don't you? But...no, we won't be having any others. Why do you ask? It's not like you to question things like that."
"I'm just making polite conversation," Elizabeth shrugged.
There was more to it than that, and Jonas clearly knew that, but she didn't really want to get into a discussion with him.
She was relieved that the baby seemed to have woken up because it meant that Jonas turned away to fuss over her again as she made a tiny noise.
He leaned down and picked the baby up gingerly and Elizabeth's heart raced when she realized he was going to pass the child to her without asking first.
He knew that she was panicking a little, and at the last moment he changed his mind and sat down on the bed next to Elizabeth with Saga in his arms.
Elizabeth leaned over to look at her again now she was awake, and she was taken aback by the large, entrancing amber eyes that were looking up at her.
"I can see why Tobias was so arrogant about his family."
"An odd reaction to looking at a baby but I suppose you're right."
"I meant...you can see that she's special, and all of Sawyer's family have the same eyes. I guess Tobias was arrogant because it's obvious they're more powerful than other people just from looking at them."
"Tobi had his mother's eyes."
Elizabeth didn't know what Jonas was talking about at first, and she didn't know what to say when she realized Jonas was referring to Sawyer's half brother.
"I think Tobias was always going to ask Sawyer to come back."
"What makes you say that?"
"I don't know," she sighed, "I guess I'm just in a weird mood, but I don't think Tobias would have passed everything on to that kid if he wasn't like Sawyer and Francesca. I think he always expected Sawyer to go back home eventually."
"You complicated things a little, Elizabeth."
"He caught me off-guard and alone in a parking lot."
"I'm aware of that."
"He could easily have taken me somewhere and held me hostage or killed me, but he didn't."
"You're not having second thoughts already, are you?"
Elizabeth furrowed her brow and looked at Jonas for a moment before she responded.
"Second thoughts about what?"
"Starting a family."
Elizabeth blushed fiercely; she hadn't expected him to be so blunt, even though she had asked.
"No," she faltered a little as she twisted her wrists in her hands
"That was hardly convincing. Are you worried about something?"
She looked at him for a moment, then sighed.
"I'm not having second thoughts, but it's a little intimidating I guess. Everyone thinks they're both dead and now you have Saga and she's like this and part of me is worried people will think I only changed my mind because I want attention or something."
"Well those people don't matter. And you may not be having second thoughts, but you are clearly nervous; you should talk to Sawyer about whatever is bothering you, if you aren't willing to talk to me about it."
"I'm not thinking as clearly as I will be in a few days - I'll talk to him about it if it's still bothering me then.!
"So there is something bothering you then?"
Elizabeth exhaled in frustration.
"I'm just vividly aware of how stupid this is. You guys have been safe here so far, but we can't guarantee things will still be safe a year from now."
"Isn't that true no matter where you are? You couldn't have guaranteed things would be safe a year from now when you were living as a human, Elizabeth. We're doing everything we can to keep this place safe, and I may be protective, but I am not half as defensive as Francesca and I am certain she won't let anything put our daughter in danger - this will be as safe a place as any to raise a child."
"I know you're right," she sighed, "but I have a horrible feeling that I'm going to be a disappointment, and that something will go wrong because of me."
"You will not be a disappointment," Jonas's voice was firm and confident, and Elizabeth felt reassured by his tone.
"I hope you're right."
