ANNA: “Will you show me what is in the bag?” I request, again shocked by my bravery. He nods and uncrosses his leg, pulling his hand away from his face. He shifts into his seat and looks into the bag, it is almost as if he is debating what item to pull first. The first item he pulls out is a book. It is a large paperback, the cover is rolled and frayed, the spine well creased. He holds it out to me and hesitantly I take it from him and look at the cover. My breathe catches in my chest. I feel tears sting in my eyes. “I read this my senior year in high school; it was my favorite book. But I lost it on our graduation trip to France and couldn’t find another copy of it because it went out of print. Where did you find it?” I choke the words out as calmly as I can.
