Chapter 9

Adaline's POV Everyone has gone to their respective sleeping spots. I am standing in my shower trying to figure out what the hell happened tonight. We were having such a good time, then s**t hit the fan. Right before I was about to get answers from Heather about why everything was so weird about the things they said and did, the guys came out with a busted up Barrett. My heart sank seeing him like that and all I wanted to do was get him help. I was terrified of the five-minute drive back to the house, which seemed like one, because the body guards were going at least 100 down the road. Two are currently stationed outside my door and the other two were by the front door. Beck had given Bennett something to help him sleep and heal, so he was set up in my bed. I had mindlessly washed the night off of me, gotten out, gotten dressed and was finishing my night routine. I stared at myself in the mirror, somehow I had changed in the last four hours. It's weird, but I feel like my features look almost happy. It sounds weird, but I honestly look like I have changed. I got back into the room, turned out the small desk light next to my couch and was about to get into it when Barrett started shaking and whimpering. It sounded like he was almost crying. I rushed to him, placed my hand on his forehead. He didn't feel hot so I tried to shake him away. Just the touch seemed to have calmed him down, but he didn't wake up. I was about to call Beck when his other arm grabbed me and pulled me down next to him. He had completely calmed down by that point, but I was stuck. The places where he touched me again felt so warm, it gave me butterflies. I must have passed out right there in his arms because the next thing I knew, the sun was shining through the window and I heard James downstairs squealing. I managed to pry myself out of his hold, did my business in the bathroom and made my way out of the room. The guards were still there but both holding large cups of coffee, "good morning guys, did you already get some food? He's still asleep in there if you wanted to head down and get some, Beck makes the best pancakes in the world!" They both smiled, bowed their heads at me and the larger one, who almost resembled that bald cleaning guy, but was increasingly larger. I honestly wonder what they feed these guys as kids. "Yes miss, Holden brought us both up dishes with the little sir earlier." I smiled, knowing James probably was in awe of these two, " Okay good and the my name is Adaline, its nice to sort of meet you" I giggled "of course miss Adaline" I rolled my eyes they are gonna stick with the miss, "my name is Stefan and this is Elliot" the other smiled and nodded again. I smiled and headed down to find James. "MOMMA" he squealed, "Good morning baby, how did you sleep?". "Good I got to see the twinkles again, and then got to play with my new friends", he was jumping out of my arms and running, staring at Holden. I laughed. Some mornings I wondered what he dreamed about because he would bring up the lights, but Beck always said he's a kid, so not to worry, "your new friends, huh? What have you been playing?" Holden now had him upside down holding him by his legs and James was giggling louder than I had ever heard, "We played cops and we also played tag." Heather brought over some pancakes, bacon and coffee for me to the table "thank you", "No problem, and yes he is quite the energetic one and really fast but thankfully my Sawyer keeps me on my toes enough to keep up with him" we both laughed. "Mmm Becks this hits the spot you know exactly what I needed after last night" Sam came over and sat at the table as well, "Yeah these pancakes are the best ever" he stated with a mouthful, "could I please have a few more?" James came running over as Beck places some more on Sam's plate. "Who is Sawyer mom and can he come over and play?" Holden sits down exhausted and started eating as well. "Sawyer is Sam and Heather's son and you'll have to ask them if he can come and play, and have you eaten yet little man?" he climbed into Heather's lap and grabbed her face in his little hands "yes momma I already ate" then stared right into Heather's eyes, "momma she is so pretty, can we keep her?" We all busted out laughing and Heather had the biggest smile on her face "Well she does belong to me and Sawyer little man but I guess we can share her with you sometimes" Sam got out between fits of laughter. James then snuggled in closer to Heather, seemingly satisfied with that answer, and she just cuddled him close. This is always what I wanted the feeling of family just like this. This made me happy, I was content, well, almost content. Then I saw him standing out of the corner of my eye. He was on the last step of the stairs looking at all of us. He looked happy, genuinely happy. The butterflies in my stomach went on full blast. We made eye contact and I swear I saw love and adoration in his eyes as he smiled at me. "Good morning Barrett, how do you feel?" Beck broke us out of our moment, dammit Beck. "Good morning everyone, I am feeling much better. Thank you, Beck and thank you, Adaline, as I'm guessing you forced everyone to take me here" he said, with amusement in his voice. My face became a tomato as he singled me out, but I still nodded my head and said "Yeah I mean she has helped James so much when he got hurt and we were closer here, so I figured it was best". Then I saw James wriggle out of Heathers's arms who, by the way, looked super sad he had left her, and ran right to Barrett. My heart sank a bit because he had already met all these new people, and I was not sure they would even stick around and I didn't want to break his little heart, but the way he looked up at Barrett also made my heart soar, however Barrett looked a little terrified. "Woah you have blue hair, up please!" he had his arms as high as they could go impatiently waiting to be picked up. Barrett froze and looked at me for permission I guess, so I smiled and nodded. He lifted his little body up and James wrapped his arms around his neck. I started to tear up a little. "Hi, I'm James, what is your name and I like your hair." The genuine laugh Barrett gave made me smile. "Wow James, that was a big sentence but its nice to meet you and thank you I like it too!" Well this is going to be interesting.
