"I don't get it." David said as he looked at the suit in front of him. He looked at the ugly thing then to his old roommate Alex. He had been getting married, his mother was sick so he was taking it easy on the teasing about the outfit, if Alex had to wear that color, he would laugh behind his back, but Alex was here holding it out to him.
"I am not choosing from my brothers. You are my best man." He again offered the bag with the white suit and the bright pink and blue design for the vest and tie.
"No."
"No? You're saying no to me? David, you need to take this, you need to stand up beside me as I marry her-"
"What is with the color? I am not wearing that. Anywhere." David waved his hands at it and Alex rolled his eyes as he put it down on the chair in his office.
"David... you're like my other brother, the one I chose to be related to and keep in my life-"
"I get it Alex, but I am not wearing that. Is that what you are wearing?" David asked knowing they would look like idiots. He hated it, but it would do it, this was Alex, the guy who dragged him along in law school and helped him get a move on with everything in his career.
"I need you to just agree. When you make a big deal about the suit, my mother will be ok with changing it. So will her mother." Alex sighed and ran a hand through his hair, he had started to sprout grey just around the temple and while David was worried it was about the wedding, he knew it had to do something about his mother and her heart issue.
"How is your mother doing?" David asked moving to sit on his own desk and he watched his friend take a deep breath.
"She's still wanting to run around and do things. But my brothers are now doing her bidding to a perfect T. Dorian is even learning how to steer the carriage." Alex laughed a little and relaxed before he looked around the office he was in. There wasn't piles of boxes, but there were a few. "What are you working on?"
"A hospital case at the moment. Mal Practice, the police are still looking for people who might be affected in the same way." David knew he couldn't lie to Alex, but he didn't want to make the guy more worried over what could go on in a hospital.
"Sounds fun, anything criminal?"
"When it becomes criminal you know who I call." David told him and then he sighed. "Why me?"
"You know why." Alex laughed and sighed. "Ever since that first semester we have been closer than any of my brothers and I. They were all so much younger, it was hard to relate to them in the same way we did. You're like the brother I wanted."
"I hope you didn't tell them that." David had spent many breaks visiting Alex's mothers house. He had gotten to know that family well, and David had to admit, while he loved his mothers, he always wanted a bigger family, he wanted brothers, or sisters, just siblings in general. He was the only one of their friend group that didn't have a conventional family.
He had his mother, never knew his father, and didn't have any siblings, cousins, or relatives in general. He was lonely before college, now he strived to take care of himself, his mother, and anything he would ever need in the future.
"Where is my bride?" David laughed knowing that most of the time Lena did not like when he just dropped in. People knew him here, and last time someone big saw them together, they offered her a raise and a desk at reception. Lena had stayed quiet as they want on about how good of a paralegal she must be, that was until Alex corrected him and told him off.
"She should be dealing with the court files we have. She offered to do that." I told him and he nodded slowly and smirked. "She knew you were coming in?"
"Yep, after that one time I have been better about telling her when I was planning on stopping in. I told her this morning before we left that I had to pick up your suit and bring it to you." Alex told him and shrugged, hoping that it would have taken long enough to do all his chores for the day, and then come and see her to take her out to lunch.
"Might as well take you out too, we're supposed to meet our wedding planner and she might want you to write down some dates."
"Dates? For what?" David asked not sure what he was going to need to do. What else was he supposed to do for a wedding that wasn't his?
"Yeah, she will want to size you for your actual tuxedo, talk you through the rings, the bachelor party, toasts, stuff like that." He waved it off and shrugged, David could tell that he didn't know what the party planner would need.
"She is also doing your bachelor party?" David asked knowing that sounded a bit off, but with Alex and Lena, he knew that it wasn't going to be strippers and drinking, it would probably be poker night with more people, like his brothers.
"No, you are, but she will need a date for it, that way she can make sure those who are invited will be able to know about it. She is handling details like emails, phone calls and reminders for us as well. She had to make an appointment for Lena to get in to find a dress, and then added two extra dates before she even found a a dress for fittings."
"How long until your wedding again?" David asked knowing that he had the date saved, but didn't have the date right in his mind.
"June 15th." Alex told him and looked over his friends face, he knew that David was a little over worked, but he always thrived on the work. He hoped that this wedding stuff wasn't putting too much on him, but the second Alex knew he couldn't choose from his brothers, David was the only man who he wanted next to him as he marries Lena.
"And we would want the bachelor party before that?" He had to make sure, he had never been to a wedding, let alone asked to be in one.
"Yes, about a week, or two before the wedding, apparently it's not done the night before like I thought, but don't worry, Mina has set me right." Alex told his friend remembering how he told her that it would be on the 14th, and all the wedding planning fairy did was laugh before re-asking her question.
"Ah, so first Saturday of June?" David offered out knowing that had to be a week or two before. And he wouldn't have to miss work to recover the next day.
"Sounds like a plan, let me give you the number, you can call her now and we can tell her." He pulled out his phone and David walked to his phone on the desk and dialed the normal area code before going along with the number Alex told him.
It was only four rings before someone answered. "Hello, this is Wilhelmina the party planner, what can I do for you?"
"Hi Mina, it's Alex Dougenis, I am with my best man and we wanted to call so we could lock in a date for my bachelor party with you." David waited as Alex seemed to do something else on his phone.
"Hi Alex, did your friend... David? I think you said his name was David, agree?" David smirked as he could hear papers rustling and he could just imagine if she was busy she was trying to find his file for the party.
"Yes I did. Hello Mina." David called out so she knew that he was also listening.
"Hello David, is this the best number to reach out at if anything were to go wrong with the bachelor party?" Mina asked knowing that her caller ID would have it saved and she could label it in her Alex and Lena notebook.
"Yes, this is my office, I am here more than anywhere else." David told her and she gave a little laugh and told him she knew what that felt like. "Alex and I were talking about how we would have the bachelor party the first Saturday of June."
"Sounds great, and have you decided on where it might be held?"
"Not as of yet, I am thinking something along the lines of a poker night, Alex isn't really into the whole typical stripper bash." David saw the look of relaxation rush over Alex's face as he realized he wasn't going to need to talk him out of anything too big.
"So, at someone's home? I can decorate, get drinks, food, anything like that."
"I am sure you have done a couple of these, if you have some good ideas I can just go over it with you when you know what to give us. I think for the most part it will be us, his brothers, and two other friends unless he has others he wants to invite, I am guessing the guest list is ultimately up to him I am just the guy who does the activities right?" David asked her to make sure he was sure about his responsibilities for the party.
"Sounds about right, so you want poker, do you want a dealer hired or would one of you just take over the role?"
"We are fine with switching off." David didn't want a casino feel, if that was the need they would just go to the casinos. "We might need some poker chips and a big table."
"I will track it all down, if I need more information, or I get offered anything more for the party when making calls, we will talk about other things." Mina told him, writing things down like hot dogs, nachos, beers, and other things he had brought up like the table and chips they would need to play.
"Sounds good, call and leave a message, I always answer the missed calls before I go home for the night." David told her and Mina nodded once again before writing she was able to leave a message.
"Ok, well thank you, and once we decide where we are getting the suits for the wedding I will call you about the fittings." Mina told him knowing that his suit was almost as important as the grooms and that he had to be there for moral support since Alex had stress from the wedding, and his mother being sick now, she just didn't want a groom backing out of another wedding.
Mina hung up with a promise of a call when she had dates, and questions, and she closed her notebook before looking up and smiling. She had a full days work ahead of her, she had a busy morning with two more clients who wanted a graduation party, and another who wanted a baby shower.
If she was honest with herself, baby showers were the cutest to throw together, it was always based on what the mom was craving the most, what she liked, and she would get in some things for the dad and the mother of the mother.
It was a nice day all in all for her business. She was getting around uptown, getting started on calls and getting in contact, and she sure was busy and was happy to get a call from Angie, who was Lena's maid of honor, was calling about the bridal appointment she was able to get, and that she was invited to make a contact. Mina really liked Angie, she had contacts everywhere and if she could hire her, well... if she could afford to hire her, she would in a heartbeat.
Because of Angie she had a stylist agreeing to work with her any time she wanted or needed him to because she met him at a salon she worked at for a couple weeks.
She was getting to work on the styles, making sure to get the prices and stuff that Lena wanted, and Angie actually said she would be happy to add onto the price tag if she found one that was over her price.
Mina ended the night with a nice white wine, the dishes from her solo dinner were washed, and as soon as her wine glass was cleaned, she headed for the shower, cleaning up and making sure everything was in it's place before she got into bed.
Mina loved her simple life, the only stress that ever came her way nowadays were from work and even on that stress, she thrived. It was her ideal life.
