Chapter 10: Huntington Grange

1537 Words
Jacob had to leave straight from the hospital to the office, so he'd called another car for himself. And had me taken back to Huntington Grange with the original car we'd come in. He'd also sent one car of his bodyguards with me and kept the others for himself. The car drive back to the Grange hadn't taken long, and I had been tempted to talk to the driver, but somehow I got the impression that wasn't the kind of thing Jacob Greyson did with his staff. So I'd restrained herself, and simply sat in silence. When they pulled up at the Grange, the same young woman that had met me when I'd first come this morning met me again. Along with two other woman by her side. “Silver," I greeted, as I climbed out of the door opened for me by the driver. I would have done it myself, but he had been at my door before I even realized what was happening. “Miss Smith," Silver did a slight bow, and I resisted the urge to tell her not to. The young woman looked more like a young girl the longer I looked at her. “Welcome back. This is Doctor Patricia Starling and Sister Juliette Mason." The psychologist and nurse Jacob Greyson had hired to act as my personal servants. He hadn't called them that, but I was able to put it together well enough. That's who they were and what their purpose was. I had been about to feel guilty about the expense that he was going through, but then I remembered that it wasn't really about me. It was all just to make sure I was a good incubator for the devil's spawn. “Nice to meet you both," I said with a smile on my face. As long as I could keep the running sarcasm inside my head, I figured all would be well. “Lovely to meet you," Sister Juliette said, grasping my hand warmly. “I can't wait to get started." Huh. She was nothing like the Nurse Ratchet I had been expecting. I had thought they would treat me like nothing more than a carrier, and their only true concern was the baby that would soon be placed in me. But they seemed genuinely kind. “Likewise," Doctor Starling said as she shook my hand. “We'll begin tomorrow, if that's alright with you. And we'll give you the day to settle into your new home for the next year." “Tomorrow?" I asked. “But I'm not even pregnant yet?" The more clinical terms I used to define this whole situation happening to me, the more comfortable I felt about it. A business arrangement. Clean and clinical. I half wished that there were more clinical words to use other than just pregnant. “The therapy begins long before that, Ma'am," Doctor Starling told me again. “We need to know your mental state before the baby grows, your health, both physical and mental, will have a direct impact on everything about this future baby." So, the fetus is part of a study, I guessed. No wonder all these doctors and nurses were so willing to play personal servant, they're all probably going to get recognition for however this whole things turns out. I shook my head hard. I was making assumptions, and that would get me absolutely nowhere. I had to go on hard evidence. And right now, this whole thing had as good a chance of being an experiment as it did that Jacob Greyson simply wanted a baby and was going to do everything in his power to care for it. And I definitely could not be putting out an article claiming him to be a monster, and it turned out that he just really only wanted a baby. I would be turning him into more of a hero in everyone's eyes then, and I would only be worse off than when I started. “I understand," I said to the nurse and doctor. “Then I look forward to starting tomorrow, then." They both greeted me, and left me in the care of Silver, who ushered me inside. “It's all so exciting, isn't it?" Silver gushed, pulling me through the doors and into the lavish living room I'd seen only once before. “A baby! At Huntington Grange! Can you even imagine it?" Did this girl live in a fairytale? Or was she just so holed up here that even a baby would be welcome company? “The family's lived here for generations, you know," Silver continued gushing, as she took me through corridors and doors, barely glancing along the way. I panicked just slightly, thinking I would have to remember my way through all these corridors. There was no way I would find my way back out. “But the last child born was Mister Greyson himself, and he's got no other brothers and sisters," Silver continued chattering. “And of course, no young cousins to speak of and no one visits and this house is just so, so quiet without anyone really living in it." “Silver," I stopped her. “I don't," I cleared my throat, stopping dead in my tracks, forcing Silver to stop and turn around to me. “I don't think I'll be able to find my way here and back everyday, can't I stay in a room closer to the front door?" Silver laughed. Actually laughed, like a high bell, and then quickly pulled me forward again. “Don't be silly, you have to be safe first, that's the most important thing," Silver told me. “The rooms to the back of the house are the most protected. They're the closest to the safe room. And besides," Silver waved her hand, “You'll get used to where everything is soon enough." We finally arrived. And I guessed it purely on the fact that Silver had stopped pulling me. “This is your apartments," Silver announced chirpily, “I'll come and get you from here for breakfast, lunch and supper. Your whole routine is printed out on your desk, and I'm on speed dial two on the phone that's also been left for you." Silver stepped ahead of me, and pushed on the huge doors, opening them both and then stepped back, allowing me to walk through first. I stood awestruck, staring at the room. It was easily the most beautiful place I had ever seen. In the center of the room was a king bed, looking larger than any bed I had ever seen. Covered with a calming, dark green duvet and more pillows than I could count. There was an alcove to one side, looking both part of the room and separated from it. It held a desk, with shelves behind it. My home office that I would get as part of my contract, enabling me to continue my work from a safe and stress free place. The desk held a new macbook and iphone, and I couldn't wait to get started on them. They were sure to work infinitely better than my outdated devices. The book shelf was stacked full with volumes of books, there were a few other trinkets and baubles decorating the shelves as well. One of the walls of the bedroom was simple solid oak pieces of wood, reaching from the floor to the ceiling. I walked over to them, and lightly touched my hand on the door, pressing gently. The door swung open inward, revealing cupboards filled with rows and rows of clothing, shoes and accessories. More than I had seen even in some stores. “Oh my god," I breathed. “They're all for you, Ma'am," Silver whispered excitedly by my elbow. “For every month of pregnancy, too. I helped Mr. Greyson picked some of them out. The pink ones were my choice. And the light blue, too." I couldn't believe what I was looking at. I walked into the huge walk-in closet, running my fingers over the fabric in the closet. I was too afraid to look at the labels. I was sure some of these clothing cost more than my actual apartment. I shook my head, trying not to let everything overwhelm me, though that was something much easier said than done. So I went over to my desk, hoping to ground myself in my work. I tapped lightly on the laptop, I would begin working soon, I promised myself, before the phone caught my attention. “Who's speed dial one?" I asked, picking up the new iPhone left for me on my desk, turning it over and examining it from all sides, remembering Silver had told me that the young girl herself was saved as speed dial two. I couldn't imagine who I would need to contact so frequently that they had been saved in my phone as a speed dial. I thought of all the doctors and specialists I had met so far, wondering which one of them it could be. Silver laughed again, high and sweet. “Mr. Greyson, silly!" She said, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
