The storm from last night really did a number on the Diner, Brenda called us in early, especially the morning shift team to clean up the Diner before letting in any customers. There were leaves and dust all over the place as if someone left a window open. Last night the storm was pretty bad and unpleasant. Not only did we get a lot of rain, but it got so cold and dark that it felt like we were living a chapter of the Mist.
“Zoey, don’t you think it is time for you to head out?” Brenda asked when I finished up helping my last table. “I still have a few minutes.” I replied, taking off my apron and placing my notepad underneath the counter. “You still need to get dressed and the bus will be here in ten minutes.” She said taking my apron from me. “Okay, fine. Just don’t pull me over your lap in front of these people.” She smiled at my joke but still made me go get ready before I was really late.
I slipped on some jeans, accompanied by a jersey and some boots that I should probably replace before the winter was completely upon us. I fixed my hair after stuffing my uniform into my locker. I grabbed my bag and met Brenda outside the door holding a cup out to me. “Your breakfast.” I smiled when I saw it was a smoothie.
“Thanks, Brenda.” She nodded. “Now get going already.” I beamed at her before making a run for the bus.
I made my way towards the College’s entrance while enjoying my smoothie. It felt like I started playing dodge from the moment I entered the building. Everyone was either too caught in their conversation to pay me attention or it was just obnoxious boys not watching where they were walking. I successfully avoided them but not the next person as my smoothie splashed all over me when the person walked right into me. I cried out as the coldness hit in me the face and made its way down my chest.
“Seems like you can’t stay out of trouble.” I raised my head to the voice and found his eyes dancing with humour as he took in my situation. “By the looks of it, trouble always finds me.” I answered throwing the cup into the trash. I then noticed he was wearing his white jacket and there was nothing I could do to hide my smile.
“Glad to see that you’ve survived the storm.” He said ignoring my smile. “It was pretty cold last night.” I admitted. He frowned and then quirked an eyebrow. “Our dorms don’t have heaters or any sign of aircon to keep yourself warm during the winter. They get pretty cold.” I informed him trying to clean my face from my smoothie.
“Enough about me, how was last night’s game?” I asked him trying to ignore the coldness between my breasts. “Our Quarterback got injured and it looks like he won’t be returning very soon.”
“Damn, I’m sorry. Did you guys at least win?” He shook his head. “No, Coach is pretty mad about it but there was nothing we could’ve done.” He said looking at me with both eyebrows raised. “Are you okay?” He asked. “Yeah, I just need to get cleaned up. The smoothie got into places that I’m not going to discuss with you.” He chuckled making me blush. “I got an extra jersey in my locker if that would help.”
“You’ve done too much for already.” I said making my way towards the bathroom. I pulled off my jersey that was covered in smoothie I tried to clean it but it was already stained. I grabbed some paper towels and wiped off my face. I pulled up my shirt to clean bits of the smoothie that went down between my breasts.
I folded up my jersey and decided there was no reason to keep on wearing it. I was at least wearing a long sleeve shirt. I left the bathroom and to my surprise found Duncan waiting outside. He was leaning with his back against the wall, his hands in his pockets and a jersey tucked underneath his arm. His dark eyes found me, they traveled from my face, down my chest and down to my tiny waist. “You are really small.” He commented pushing himself up from the wall.
“You do know what they say; Dynamite comes in small packages.” I felt like I was winning when I caught him hiding his smile. “Here.” He handed me his jersey. “By the looks of it, you need it.” I accepted his jersey and slipped it on. “You got to stop being so nice to me, people would start thinking that you actually have a heart like the rest of us.”
“You haven’t done anything wrong for me to be nasty to you. And I stumbled into you knocking your milkshake all over you.”
“Smoothie.” I corrected him. He frowned. “It was my breakfast.” I told him. “You do want me to feel like an ass.”
“No, not really. And your jersey made up for it.” I won’t try my luck and ask for his white jacket instead. “I got to get to class before Xander sends the whole calvary to come look for me.” Duncan just shook his head in amusement. “And we don’t want him to lock you up now, do we?” Duncan laughed and for a moment I was astonished. He was actually laughing. We said our goodbyes and made our way to our separate lecture rooms.
Xander looked at me with a quired eyebrow when I entered the room and made my way over to my seat. “Here I was thinking that you were going to skip out on class today.” He said. “I was planning on it when I was covered in my breakfast.” He looked confused. “I got my smoothie knocked out on me when your captain didn’t watch where he was going.” Xander chuckled.
“Is that why you are wearing his jersey?” He asked. I drew my eyebrows together. He then patted me on the back and said. “Duncan’s initials.”
"Jones is my surname." I replied with a shrug. "Liar. It's Reynolds."
“Say another word, and I will make sure the only ball you get to see is yours.” I warned.
"My lips are sealed."
