“Get off my property before I call the police!” Henry shouted, his veins bulging on his forehead.
“Dad…”
“I’m not your f*cking father. You’re a wh*re. Get. Off. My. Property. Now!” Henry punctuated each word.
“I’ll just go,” Grace said.
Henry stomped inside the house angrily.
Josephine stepped out, closed the door and approached Grace with a sinister look on her face.
“What are you doing?” Grace asked, stepping back as Josie approached her menacingly.
“Telling you a secret.” Josie answered simply.
“What?”
“All of this was set up by Andrew and I,” Josie started. Grace immediately looked towards Andrew, who nodded in confirmation. “We’re going to get married. Sis, you should never trust anyone. Not even your own family.”
“Clearly,” Grace replied. “If Andrew wanted to marry you, all he had to do was say something. All of this was unnecessary.”
“It was, if I wanted to taint your good-girl reputation. I’m sick and tired of you getting all the praises and me not getting anything.” Josie said with a snarl.
“You got what you wanted,” Grace said.
“Yes, and now you can leave and never come back,” Josephine told her.
“I’ll leave. But, mark my words, Josephine Allen and Andrew Evans, you’ll regret this. Goodbye”
Grace turned and left.
‘I guess begging isn’t beneath me after all,’ she thought.
Once more, Grace looked up at the metal gates in front of her. Would he think that she was indebted to him?
She startled when a voice came from somewhere beside the gate, jolting her from her thoughts.
“Who’s there?” She asked.
“Who are you?” A male voice, who Grace assumed to be the security watching the premises, asked instead of answering her question.
“Grace Allen.”
“How can I help you?” The man asked.
“I’m here to see Colton Miller,” she told him.
“Please state your business here,” the voice said.
‘I’m here to beg.’ The security guard didn’t need to know that though.
“Please tell him that I’m here. I think he’s expecting me,” she said. The last part she whispered because he told her that she would be back.
“Wait one moment,” the man said and then there was silence.
She looked around frantic and scared because she was alone at night in an unfamiliar place.
“Why are you here?” Colton asked on the other end of the intercom.
“I…” Grace fumbled with her words.
“Speak. I have things to do,” Grace didn’t like Colton’s tone at all.
“Never mind, I’ll just go. Sorry to bother you,” she said and turned around to walk away.
Just as she’d walked for only a minute, she heard footsteps coming up behind her. Frightened, Grace turned around to see Colton catching up to her.
Oh, it was only him. She continued walking. In her mind, he meant no harm, because if he did, he wouldn’t have bailed her from the police station. Then again, he might have done it for his own selfish gains.
“Grace, wait,” he called.
“Why?” She asked as she stopped and turned abruptly.
“Grace…”
“You’re just like my father. You want something to hold over my head so I can do your bidding. Well, no Colton. That’s not going to happen. I’m grateful that you bailed me out, but I’d rather live on the streets and die of hunger than to owe you anything.” Grace said angrily.
“You’re right. I just wanted to embarrass you because I know you didn’t have another choice. I’m sorry. Please come inside the house,” Colton said.
“How do I know that you won’t think I’m indebted to you?” Grace asked, one brow raised.
“I won’t, I promise,” Grace stared at him for a while. He was a handsome man.
He had an angular face with a sharp jawline and a muscular frame.
Just as she thought about his muscles and the way they felt when she’d hug him in the shower, she began to blush.
“Are you OK? You look flushed,” Colton said. He brought his hand upwards to touch Grace’s face but she jumped backwards.
There was no way she could have this man’s hands on her and not get aroused. His touch would only ignite unwanted flames.
“I’m fine. Thank you.” She added the last part because she didn’t want to seem ungrateful. “Look, Colton, if I agree to live with you, I hope you don’t throw everything you do for me in my face. I’m going to need my own space.”
“That can be arranged,” Colton sad as he nodded thoughtfully.
He stretched his hand out to Grace, who took it reluctantly. He pulled her closer. Not close enough that their bodies were touching, but close enough so that he could look into her eyes as he spoke. “I promise.”
She believed him. He seemed like the type of person that she could rely on. She hoped that she made the right choice.
With his hand on her lower back, she was led inside his mansion. He escorted her upstairs, showing her the room that would be hers as long as she lived there. It was right across from his as he’d mention.
“Why don’t you freshen up, then meet me downstairs. I think we should have a proper conversation about our… arrangement,” He told Grace then left the room to give her privacy.
It was only then that Grace got a chance to really look around. She thought that his place would have looked more modern.
It was gorgeous nonetheless. The large tub in the bathroom had caught Grace’s eyes more than anything else. If he hadn’t been waiting, she would have been inside it, soaking in warm water.
Instead, Grace took a quick shower. The warm water was a welcome distraction from her thoughts. She should stop worrying because Colton seemed to be genuinely interested in helping her. She should show gratitude by doing something for him when she had the chance.
But what did he have to gain by helping her? She had to ask him. No one did anything for free. She of all people should know that by now. Besides, she had nothing to offer.
Thou she shouldn’t, she felt sorry for Josephine. She thought she was having the opportunity of a lifetime, but she was going to be disposed of just like Grace was when her father didn’t need her anymore. Though she was a b*tch and set Grace up for the worst, she was still her sister.
Grace came out of the shower and wrapped herself in one of the fluffy towels she saw on the shelf. They were so soft.
Exiting the shower, Grace barely opened the door and pushed her head through the c***k to see if Colton was still in her room. He wasn’t, thank God, but clothes were lain on the bed for her.
This time, instead of jeans, there was a pretty yellow sundress. She wore the clothes and went downstairs. Not knowing where to find him, she went wondering.
There were bedrooms downstairs too, along with a massive kitchen that she hoped she got the chance to use in the future. There was an indoor as well as an outdoor pool. She had to explore the entire property soon.
“There you are,” Colton’s voice startled her. “Come.”
She followed him outside of the kitchen and into the dining room, where he offered her a seat. There were food and fruits on a tray, and a jug of orange juice and water. The juice looked freshly squeezed and she was thirsty all of a sudden.
“Juice?” Colton asked. He must have seen the way she was looking at the jug.
“Sure, thanks,” she replied.
Colton poured some for himself and sat back. Grace began eating, but what Colton said made her choke.
“You need to take this morning after pill.”
