“Oh, Josephine thank God you’re here. Did you come to get me out?” Grace expressed sarcastically.
Josephine’s dirty colors were beginning to show, so she wasn’t sure what would happen. She just hoped Josie could put aside whatever bad feelings she had towards her and bailed her. If she didn’t, Grace had to consider sleeping in a cell, because she had no one else to call. She would be locked up for two weeks!
“No, I’m not here to get you. In fact, I hope they keep you locked up because this is where you belong,” Josephine sneered.
Grace felt like she had been slapped byJosie’s words.
“Why? Grace asked.
“Why what?” Josie asked, pretending to be oblivious.
“Why are you doing this to me?”
“Why? You’ve always had everything. The job, the man, our father. I was always second best when it came to you, and it’s time for that to change now.” Josephine said through gritted teeth. Her anger was becoming palpable.
“But, that’s not my fault,” Grace said, her brows knitted in frustration.
“It is!” Josephine shouted. “It’s all your fault.”
“How is it my fault?”
“I’m older than you. Why didn’t I get the job to work alongside father instead of you?” Josephine asked, her arms akimbo.
“Don’t you think that’s a question you should ask Dad? He’s the damn owner!”
“Shut up, you b*tch!” Josephine roared. It scared Grace because she had never seen her sister like this before. She’d always been poised. Maybe she’d been pretending all along.
“Calm down,” Grace said holding her hands up in case Josephine came after her physically.
“Don’t tell me to calm down! Why’d Andrew choose you instead of me? And why did you accept his proposal? You knew I liked him since we were younger. Why didn’t he choose me?” Josie said, holding her head like she was having a breakdown.
Pity was the only emotion Grace could show her. If she’d known that Josie felt so strongly for Andrew, she would have never accepted his proposal for marriage. She would have stood up to her father and told him that Josie was the more suitable choice for Andrew, even though she too liked him.
When Andrew proposed to her, she accepted without hesitation, and Josie’s feelings weren’t put into consideration. At the time, Grace just knew that he was a good man, and she wanted him.
“I’m sorry, Josie. If I had known your feelings were so strong, I would have said no. But I don’t know why he asked me instead of you. I always thought you were the one he liked since you’re closer in age.” Grace told her.
“The reason why Andrew asked you is because of your stupid virginity. The Evans family is demanding that he marry a f*cking virgin and I’m not one. The worst part about all of it is that we already f*cked. He was the one who took my virginity.” Josie blurted, then smirked at Grace’s shocked expression, “Yes, Sis, I have been f*cking him, and now that you’ll be gone, I will finally have him all to myself.”
Reflex took over as Grace held her chest, feeling like she was about to have a heart attack. Her breaths felt constricted. Josie’s been having s*x with Andrew? Was that the reason why he wasn’t pressuring Grace for s*x? It made sense.
Both her sister and her fiancé, ex-fiancé, played her for a fool. She really thought that Andrew loved her. Or, if he didn’t at the moment, he’d learn to love her eventually.
It was good though, that they showed their true nature now rather than later when she and Andrew got married. She would have been miserable if she found out after the fact.
“I can’t believe this,” Grace said shaking her head in disappointment.
“You better believe it. Oh, and father gave me a message to give to you,” Josie said then remained quiet as if she wanted Grace to ask her what the message was.
“What?” Grace rolled her eyes but prompted.
“You’re fired,” Josie delivered the news with a smirk.
“You can’t fire me,” Grace said stubbornly.
“I can’t. But Dad can.”
“He won’t,” Grace said though, her face was as white as a sheet of paper.
“He already did, and guess who will be taking your job as Dad’s executive assistant at Allen Incorporation? Me.” Josie laughed loudly, like an evil witch. She only needed a broom and a pointy hat to complete a witchy persona. It chilled Grace’s bones that Josephine would do everything and anything to be in her place.
But Josephine being an executive assistant?
All of a sudden, Grace started laughing as well. Josie might be smarter when it came to schematics, but in terms of being an executive assistant, she was as dumb as a rock. She didn’t have one brain cell.
Josephine stopped laughing all of a sudden.
“What’s so funny about you losing your job and me taking your place?” Josie asked, now irritated.
“You’ll run the business into the ground! What do you know about being an executive assistant?” Grace asked. Since it was clear she was on her own, she didn’t hold back anymore. Josie provided no answer.
Henry only did it because of spite, but to put Josie in her position, he was pushing his own company into the gutter. He would realize this when it was too late. She was going to sit back and watch the company fall.
‘Where are you going to sit back and watch since you’re now homeless?’ A voice inside her head asked.
When Henry had kicked her out of the house, though she was sad about it, she thought she had a job and could find a place for herself.
But, now that her job had been taken from her, what would she do? She had no one to call or nowhere to go. Maybe she should stay inside the jail for the two week period. At least she would be sure about the roof over head and three meals per day. It would give her time to think about her next move.
‘You could try to contact Colton,’ the same annoying voice inside her head whispered.
No! She didn’t even want to go there. She was not going to call him and ask for any favors so that she would owe him.
“You’re going to rot inside this jail, because no one will come to your aid. No one likes you,” Josie said in a fit of rage, pulling Grace from her reverie.
“I’d rather be locked up in here than to be around you,” Grace said, looking Josephine up and down.
Since her words didn’t seem to affect Grace the way she wanted, Josephine decided that it was best if she left.
Taunting laughter rose from Grace’s throat as Josephine stormed out of the police station.
As soon as Josephine was out of sight, Grace’s laughter slowed and morphed into panic instead. It was as if the reality of the situation was just setting in.
All of a sudden, her throat constriction restarted and she felt like she was going to pass out. She took deep breaths when she realized that she might be having a panic attack. She practiced a breathing exercise that she knew would keep the attacks at bay, becoming relieved when she saw that the techniques were working. The last thing she wanted was to faint in the police station.
Laying her head on the desk in front of her, exhausted, Grace decided to take a short nap. It would be best to get all the sleep she could as she didn’t know what would happen next.
A commotion at the front of the station roused her from her nap. As she came too, she looked around and then she saw ‘him’.
Colton.
“What’s he doing here?” She whispered to herself.
An officer immediately went to assist him. Grace didn’t expect the next words that came out of his mouth.
“I’m here to bail Grace Allen.”
