Chapter Four “I heard about your father,” the voicemail from Bennett rings out, “I’m sorry.” The message ends as abruptly as it began. I put my phone down on my dresser and curl up in bed, suddenly feeling very alone. It has been two days since my dad had his stroke. At first, he was showing signs of improvement. Now, however, he seems to be getting worse. The doctors suspect he had another stroke last night. We are all waiting in a terrible limbo to see what my father will be like once this is all over or if he will even pull through. Emily is in the other room. I can hear her getting ready for her first day of work tomorrow. Anderson approved the photos I sent him and issued me a check. I should be thrilled. But all I felt was empty when I cashed it.
