Flipped Upside Down

Amber's POV I spent a small portion of the day in the kitchen learning about cookies. I found my favorite to be peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies. I spent sometime on the porch in the swing watching the training of the pack members. I wanted to learn, something told me that if I dis it would help me feel safer. But, my nerves stopped me from asking. Speaking of nerves, Momma Dee got a letter from someone that made her very worried. Though as the day went along she seemed to be better about it. At dinner she made an announcement that no one would be going to the woods for the next few days. That they would be off limits. I noticed a lot of them seemed not happy about it. But they all understood why. Some hunter guy was going to be in the looking for something. I was walking down the hall to my room. I knew that Mato was following me. He always did. Never close, always at a distance. "Did you have a good day little one?" His deep voice rumbled behind me. I still had yet to say anything to him, other then that day. I nodded shyly and opened my door. Going inside, I quickly closed my door and went to my closet to get sweats and the big baggy t-shirt. They were my favorite to sleep in. pulling out a grey one and black sweats, I pulled the quilt and sheets back on the bed and climbed in. The next morning, I got up, found a t-shirt and jeans to put on. Shoes were a bit of a problem I had never used them. Flip flops were my favorite to date. I brushed my hair and shrugged walking to the door I opened to see Mato standing down the hall in different clothes. He nodded to me and smiled. I placed my eyes on the floor and made my way down stairs. You could smell the bacon and the maple syrup. The day went much the same way most had gone. Breakfast was served, everyone finished by 7:30 am and headed out to the back yard. There the people squared off with others in the group while Mato walked through the group saying various things to each set, or adjusting people's frame. They ran after and then did stretching exercises before they all went to their rooms. I would sit on the porch and watch. Mato and Momma Dee would gather on the stair off to the side and chat for a bit. I would sit on the porch most of the day watching the people go about there day. kids playing and couples lost in themselves. I would see Mato watching me from his office or he would take his phone calls out side. The kitchen would always send my lunch plate out on the porch so I could sit and watch the people come and go. I am not sure why I liked sitting back just watching but made me fill much better to just watch. Perhaps, I had some for of control but I was not sure. The little girl they had come for I noticed was out with kids her age. They were being kind and trying to get her to play. I smiled knowing that at least she would have some form of childhood. Momma Dee came out always just after lunch for tea with me on the porch and to see how I was doing. I was beginning to enjoy our chats, perhaps it was missing events in my life that craved it, but Momma Dee passed no judgement on anything I said or questions I asked after watching people. My latest question had been about mates. "Mates are something the Moon Goddess designs for us." She started swirling the amber liquid in her cup. "It is the counterpart to your soul." There was a faint smile on her lips. "Is Mato your mate?" I asked I seen them together a lot. I heard her soft chuckle, as she glanced at his office window. "No, his mate was my sister." She sighed. "She died one night when trafficking people tried to raid our pack. Mato fought as hard as he could. When he got to her, she was holding on to say goodbye to him." A tear escaped her eye. He grabbed the rest of us, from there we have trained to become what we are now. We hunt for the lost souls like you that were taken." She wrapped her arm around me and hugged. "Can he have another mate out there?" I asked. He seemed like a nice guy. "It has happened before, unlikely. He is just over 900 years old. If there was another I would have thought he would have met her." She sighed. I nodded my head, I felt sorry for him. It didn't seem fair. We headed in later for dinner, as I watched everyone eat it always amazed me how relaxed and happy everyone was so happy. After dinner, I wandered back out on the porch, settled in my swing and enjoyed the stars and the night breeze. I was lost in the feel of the night. I heard a commotion in the house, when the little girl who use to bring my breakfast ran out to see me. "Mato says run," she whisper- yelled. Her arm rigid as it pointed toward the woods. "What why?" I suddenly felt fear coursing my limbs. "There are some people asking for you, Mato is taking them around the pack house. You need to run into the woods." There was panic in her eyes as she glanced back inside. "Come with me," I held out my hand. "I can't" she shook her brown curls vehemently. "I need to go back inside." She gave me a weak smile, "please run." She pleaded with me before she straightened her back and walked in the house. The noise in the house, got higher and you could hear yelling. That had me up instantly. I gulped as I looked at the woods, but the image of the man standing near me in the woods, flashed in my head. So I ran. I ran hard and as fast as my legs could go.
