Chapter 3During vespers, Samuel stood very close to William—too close. His proximity was distracting, unnerving, and alarmingly satisfying. At supper Brothers Terrance and Matthew made room so Samuel and William could sit next to each other on the bench. William was grateful, but once again he and Samuel were scrunched closely together. After supper was over, and before offering the dismissal blessing, Father Benedict introduced Samuel to the Brotherhood, by saying that he was the first to be called to join the order in many years. He asked Samuel to stand. William noticed Samuel blushed slightly and looked nervous as he accepted the silent acknowledgment of the monks.
