Chapter 2Several weeks had passed since Father Benedict had given William his dispensation to skip either mass or vespers and be late for dinner to make sure he was able to complete his chores. William didn’t abuse the abbot’s generosity, but he did push it to the limit. He often arrived just after the beginning of vespers, or in the case of mass, just in time for the Eucharist, which technically counted as attendance. It’d been at that same meeting with the abbot William had been informed a young man would be arriving soon with the intention of becoming a postulant, the first to come to the Falls in many years. Father Benedict had told William the new postulant would be assigned to work the farm with him. The young man hadn’t shown up. William had concluded he’d probably changed his plan
