“Don’t, Rose,” one of the she-wolves told her softly.
Rose’s gaze snapped to the woman’s face, and she asked matter-of-factly, “Don’t what?”
“Don’t fall for Ethan,” the woman rolled her eyes.
Rose hated how obvious she was. Indeed, she admired the warrior, and maybe even had the hots for him. He was a taciturn man, handsome too, with a few scars that marred his body, only adding to his deadly charm… And Rose couldn’t help but wonder how come he was not mated yet.
Sure, she knew all about Annabelle Carmichaels, the vampire who had been his fated mate, and who had rejected him, thus making him wolfless.
“He’s free game, so why not?” Rose retorted stubbornly as her gaze went back to Ethan.
“Sweetheart, it’s been ten years, and not once did he show serious interest in a woman,” the woman shook her head in disapproval.
“I’ve always loved challenges,” Rose told her confidently as a smirk came to adorn her face.
Rose didn’t care to hear what the woman had to say, and made a beeline to Ethan.
Ethan was discussing something seemingly important with the carefree beta.
Upon her arrival to the scene, he stopped talking at once.
Rose was slightly hurt. That was not the reaction she was after.
“Hello, Rose,” Nick greeted her.
“Hey,” she said timidly, losing her drive, as her well prepared speech evaded her.
Ethan looked at her indifferently and didn’t even bother saying hi to her.
She decided to ask about something totally irrelevant. “How painful is an initiation ceremony?”
Nick merely smiled at her before saying, “I can’t say I have been there and done that, but people say the headache is hard to bear.”
She gulped down her dread and looked at Ethan, wishing he’d reassure her somehow… but to no avail.
“Your peculiar circumstances led you to us,” the beta went on. “It must be fate.”
Rose nodded at that and then, finding nothing more to say, looked at Ethan some more, like the love-struck teenager she was.
“Is that all that was on your mind?” Nick asked, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
“Yes, thank you,” she let out a discreet sigh, and then was on her way.
Rose was definitely enamored with the proud warrior. The admiration she had for him was obvious for all to see. And she wondered whether he wasn’t interested in her, seeing as she was ten years his junior, or he was too oblivious.
I’ll make you look at me, Ethan Young, she mentally vowed.

On Friday, after Rose’s initiation, in which her link to her previous pack was severed, and the new one established, there was a pack run.
She hesitated, not knowing whether she should go, seeing as she was tired.
It was then Ethan approached her and spoke to her out of his own volition, “You should go on the run. It’ll help with the headache.”
She smiled timidly at him, almost feeling his longing for a run, and was soon enough turning and joining the pack.
