AUDREY’S POV
Finally I was able to leave that jerk side and got to Daniel’s table, I took a seat, sighing tiredly.
“Are you okay?” He asked, and I nodded.
*I’m not okay* my subconscious mind screamed.
“So about my proposal, are you in?” I groaned, not this again.
“I’ll think about it, dan.”
“Okay, and we’ll be taking your mum to the hospital tomorrow.”
“I’m taking her to the hospital today after am done from here.”
“Okay.” He paused as if he was thinking of what to say next. “I’ll stop by your house later. I have to go, bye.” He pecked my cheek before leaving. I carried his plate and went back to the counter.
Work today will be so uncomfortable with Damon staring at me like a hawk, sometimes if our eyes met he would smile that million dollar smile or wink at me. It gives me a tingling feeling inside I won’t lie, but I think it’s getting weird that I’m feeling this way, totally weird.
FAST FORWARD
My shift was over, and I got a lot of tips today from customers, mostly guys who told me I was beautiful. I quickly took the work polo off and wore my clothes.
“Bye, Agnes.” I hugged her before leaving through the back door, there was no way in hell I’m taking the front door.
I got home after calling Ma’am Jocelyn, and she gave me the day off to take care of my mum. I entered the house and walked to mum’s room but paused when I saw her more pale and her legs were swollen.
“Mum.” She turned to me
“Audrey, you are back.” She said with difficulty.
“Yes, Mum, I’ll go freshen up, so we can go to the hospital.” I stood up to leave, but she held my hand.
“Sit down, Audrey, I want to tell you something.”
“Mum, save your strength until we get to the hospital okay.”
“No Audrey, it’s important.” She insisted, and I sat down back.
“Okay.”
“Go to that wardrobe, open the last drawer you will see a box. bring it out for me.” I did as she said. She sat up weakly and opened the box, it was filled with pictures I’ve never seen before. She brought the picture of a man out, and another one where she was holding the man’s hand smiling brightly. I looked at the man’s picture closely then remembered seeing it and showing it to mum before.
“Audrey, this man in this picture is your father, his name is John.” She paused and I gasped. Why’s she telling me this now? For the past twenty-three years I’ve asked her about dad, but she will always reply with * he’s not important* so why is she telling me now?
“Here have this, Audrey.” She unlocked a necklace from her neck with shaky hands and placed it in my hand.
“That was a gift from your father, once you find him, show him the necklace. Then he will know who you are, and it will also remind you of me when am gone.” She added, closing her eyes.
“Mum, why are saying all this?,” I asked worriedly, “Nothing is going to happen to you.” I said with tears already brimming in my eyes.
“Because I don’t have much time left.” she whispered
“No mum don’t say that, please you’re going to be fine, we will go to the hospital, and you will make it.” I let the tears pour out.
“Remember I love you Audrey, and I’ll always do, I know you are strong, and I would want a daughter like you in my next life, but I can’t fight it again, I’m so weak.”
“You can Mum please.” I placed my head on her shoulder crying.
“I love you Audrey.” she whispered and after some time I didn’t feel any movement from her, so I raised my head up and met her eyes closed. She wasn’t breathing, no mum please, please Mum.
“Mum.” I cried out. No, she can’t leave me alone.
“Mum, please wake up, don’t leave me alone.” I cried more as I made her lay on the bed.
“Audrey, you are home?” I heard cherry’s voice as she entered the room.
“Cher’s mum’s gone, she left me.” I shook my head crying and the bag she was holding fell from her hand.
“Y.....you are joking, right.” I shook my head, and she hugged me, crying softly.
“Oh Audrey, I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything.” She cried, and I shook my head.
“It’s not your fault.” I whispered, still crying. I cried pretty hard before passing out of exhaustion.
AN HOUR LATER
I woke up feeling a severe headache. I stared at the ceiling blankly as tears poured out from my eyes. Oh, Mum, you left me, you promised to stay with me.
“Audrey.” I heard Daniel’s voice and I stood up from the bed hugging him like my life depended on it.
“Shhh, Audrey it’s okay. Please stop crying.” He whispered, but I still cried, it hurts. It hurts badly that I couldn’t save my mum.
“I’m so useless. I’m a piece of s**t, I was unable to save my mother. I’m so worthless.” I cursed myself and Daniel shocked his head.
“No you aren’t worthless, stop saying that. Audrey, you did your best and your mum is proud of you.”
“My best wasn’t enough, if I had putted a little more effort, then she would still be alive.” I cried in agony.

A MONTH LATER
After mum’s burial a month ago, I refused to go out to associate with anyone. I was still holding a pity party for myself, Cherry and Daniel kept me company and Agnes came yesterday when she didn’t see me for over a month at the restaurant, she was shocked when she heard the news.
“Audrey come on, do you want to live your life this way.” Cherry ranted.
“I’m fine, Cher’s.”
“No you aren’t, do you think your mum will be happy seeing you this way? Audrey, she won’t, and she would be sad if you keep on blaming yourself for her death, so get your ass up from this bed and go freshen up”.
“Fine, but I’m only doing this because of Mum.” I got down from the bed and looked at myself in the mirror, I looked so skinny, there were eye bags under my eyes and my hair looked like a bird's nest. I signed before going to the bathroom.
