When there was a knock on his door that evening, Elliot was surprised to see Bekah there. “Is something the matter?” was his first thought. She never showed up out of the blue. “Oh, no. I just wanted to see you.” She suddenly looked hesitant. “Is this okay? I can go home if you’re busy.” Elliot had been busy: drinking, and having a pity party. He hadn’t responded to Bekah’s texts because he’d been in such a foul mood. Seeing her, though, he didn’t have the strength to send her away. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and hold on. Somehow, in such a small time, she’d become an anchor. He already knew intuitively that she’d understand why he was so angry. And that realization scared the piss out of him.
