Kai’s POV
“I like the sound of that,” my mate says.
And in that one perfect moment, I was finally able to release the breath I had been holding since meeting her, since she ran away and almost didn’t give us a chance. Destiny was put on this earth as my perfect counterpart and nothing would keep me from her now.
Keeping my eyes focused above her shoulders, because hellooo naked mate, I get to my feet and hold out my hand helping her to her feet. I instantly grab my suit jacket from the ground and wrap it around her shoulders. I may be her destined mate and she might be giving us a chance, but if I wanted to keep her around then I would have to wow her with my amazing gentleman qualities.
“You don’t happen to know what time it is, do you?“ she asks as she pulls my jacket tighter around her. Was that a discrete sniff I just caught? So cute.
I grab my phone out of my pant pocket. “10:23,” I say and then she’s off, running and muttering about being late, Leo going to kill her, Kiara probably freaking out, Dax wanting a reading, how she’s already failing in her oracle duties, etc, etc, etc. I follow close behind until the pack house is in sight, when I grab her elbow gently and bring us to a stop.
“Kai, I’ve got to go. I’m sorry, but my alpha is probably flipping s**t waiting on me. I promised Beta Dax I’d give him a reading before we left - I’m already slacking. They probably think I’m a horrible oracle for leaving them hanging,” she goes to continue but I quickly cut her off.
“Hey, hey..stop. Breathe,” I tell her and to my surprise she actually does, “I can promise you Dax doesn’t think any less of you. He’s the biggest teddy bear of them all. Your alpha is most likely aware of our situation and I’m sure he understands - if he doesn’t, he can speak with me,” I say that last part with a raise of an eyebrow. I may not be a huge, bulky alpha, but I know how to fight and I’m just as strong. Eli and Hunter wouldn’t let it get to that point, but it’s still nice to remind certain alphas of their place. Destiny thinks over my words and then her shoulders finally sag as she lets out a long breath.
“You’re right. They will understand. Better not keep them waiting though,” she says and then she shocks me again by taking my hand and pulling me after her.
Destiny’s POV
As soon as I decided to give Kai a chance, to try this mate thing without actually marking him, my entire mood shifted. I was feeling giddy, but I couldn’t let him see that. So again, I ran back to the pack house because I hated when people had to wait on me. Just as it came into view, Kai pulled me back and actually calmed me down - when had that ever happened with anyone else? Normally I’m the one doing the calming. It was nice for a change. Before we continued on, I grabbed his hand because let’s be real - the sparks I feel when his skin touches mine is this phenomenal, out of this world, can’t even explain with words feeling. And could his hand fit any more perfectly in mine? The moon goddess knows what she’s doing when she creates mates, that’s for sure.
We get back to the pack house just as the doors flew open and an older woman with long silver hair stormed out, disgust written all over her face as she dissected me from head to toe. I glanced at Kai and tried to gauge his reaction, but he wore a cool mask over his once warm features. Who was this woman? His mother? Please don’t let it be his mother.
“You cannot think we will accept this..this filthy dog as your mate,” the woman says. She was a witch by the smell of her..air? Maybe water? She had a cool, misty scent to her. And filthy dog? Come on. There were way better insults out there than calling a werewolf a filthy dog. What century was she living in?
“Lillith, my mate is none of your concern. I am the leader of our coven - my mate is every bit as strong as me and will be an excellent addition to our coven. Choose your next words wisely,” Kai says. His eyes never once leaving hers.
“I will not allow this! We will be the joke of all the covens - we will lose our status!” She all but yells at him. By this point, I can hear footsteps approaching from within the pack house.
“You do not decide who I take as a mate. You are on the council, you are not in charge. I am. I am the heir of the DeVerou’s and to Waverly Coven, I am your Grand Master and you will back down, Lillith. You are completely out of line,” Kai says as a wave of heavy energy settles around us. The power radiating off of him is stifling. If I didn’t know any better, I would say he was an alpha using his alpha command. It’s at this moment I realize just how powerful my mate is and how perfect of a match we really are.
Behind her, Leo and Kiara step out of the pack house, followed by Luna Reese, her alphas, their betas, and two other women I’ve never met. The alphas tense at the energy coming off of Kai, but hold their ground knowing full well who Kai is directing it towards. This woman, Lillith, flinches at the power, but she’s stubborn, this one. She won’t be backed into a corner. She straightens herself to her full height, which isn’t very tall, and she looks Kai head on.
“I will bring this matter to the council. You have spent too much time with these..these savages!” The alphas and even their betas let out low growls, but don’t move on her as she storms back into the pack house and disappears, thank the goddess.
“Friend of yours?” I say as I turn back to Kai, attempting to lighten the sour mood. But Kai only stares after her wearing a look of determination.
