Sky
When Katy passes out, I quickly catch her in my arms and lift her up with my sore eyes stuck on her face. I scowl at the serene expression on her face, hating myself for finding her cute.
"You're way too delicate for your own good..." I mutter.
Katy's head falls against my chest, and she shudders as if freezing. She will wake up in a couple of seconds. I suspect it was just the shock making her fall unconscious.
Yet, I'm still worried.
Ugh.
What is the matter with me? Three seconds in, and I'm already showing weakness! I need to get my head evaluated because the mate bond has already done a number on me!
I growl at my own growing fondness. I'm not a fan of humans. I know they are needed in our society, and I respect that, but I can't lie: I didn't want my fated mate to be a weak little human.
It doesn't matter that I have known Katy since I was a kid. I wish to reject her as soon as possible. But to my utter dismay, my traitorous heart is already bleeding for the dark blonde woman in my arms.
"Did I pass out?" Katy asks, sounding tired as I place her on the couch. She hardly weighs anything, making it even harder for me to let go.
Somehow, I manage and step away from the couch. "You did."
"Oh..." Katy blinks up toward the ceiling. There is fear in her eyes, and I hate that she looks at me like that.
I'm not dangerous.
Well...
I am dangerous, but not to Katy. After I've rejected her, I will let her return to living her human life far away from me. We will both pretend this never happened and—
Katy laughs, interrupting my thoughts. It shocks me, especially when she lifts her chin and smiles at me. "I read a book on an app not long ago. It was about fated mates; they were both werewolves, destined to be together forever and have steamy, hot s*x. This isn't like that, right? Like surely that never happens in real life."
Amusement grows within me. "Oh, so you're into those sorts of books? The steamy s*x kind?"
Her cheeks turn red. It's really too easy to make her flustered. I'm entertained. Katy is older than me, yet something tells me she doesn't have much experience with men.
How curious.
Katy grimaces. "I can't believe I just said that."
I almost laugh. Almost. "Why?"
"I usually never share this stuff, but I'm dizzy..." Katy sits up straight and looks me up and down. I can't help but flex for her. It's dumb and stupid, but f**k it, I want her to pay attention to me.
There is nothing wrong with that, right?
Either way, satisfaction rolls through me when her eyes widen. She checks out my abs, and then her eyes land on my equipment. I'm proud of that part too, and when she audibly swallows, I'm forced to stifle the smirk wanting to come out.
Flirting with Katy would be wrong, especially since I don't plan on keeping her in my life. And honestly, I don't think I could mate with her even if I wanted to.
I might be the Alpha of my pack, but my dad is still a big influence, and I can't decide things on my own. Every decision needs to be run by the elders, and I know none of them would want me to take a human for my mate. Other packs might be fine with it, but not mine.
The Howler pack is old school and all about keeping the Alpha bloodline pure. The only reason my father, an incubus, could mate with my werewolf mother without problem is his strength. It's another thing the elders like: magic and insane power.
But humans? They are all deemed weak and worthless. Katy would bring nothing to the table. Our kids would be supernatural, but the elders don't care about that. They still don't want humans involved with us.
Katy clears her throat, interrupting my train of thought. "I still can't believe you turned into a wolf... I didn't hallucinate that part, right? But, it happened, and...holy s**t. Does it mean vampires are real too?"
Sudden jealousy blossoms within me. Katy looks excited, and I worry she might be more into vampires than werewolves. Ugh. I swear Twilight is behind the sparks in her eyes.
"Werewolves are hotter than bloodsuckers," I mutter and meet Katy's eyes, hoping she will believe me.
Katy shyly giggles. "I didn't say otherwise."
"Your face said it all."
"Are you... bothered by me liking vampires?"
I growl. "No, why would I be?"
"Just wondering..."
I grunt, and Katy giggles. "You're not very talkative, are you?"
"Nope..."
"That's okay. I'm not either...unless I know the other person or when I'm so nervous that I'm just blabbering."
"Are you nervous right now?"
It shouldn't be possible, but her face seems to turn redder. "Yes."
"Why?"
"Well, because you're a werewolf who called me his mate. I'm unsure how to act around you."
Katy smiles. I get the feeling she is trying her hardest to talk. It's admirable. My mate is a determined one. Her face might be entirely red, yet she still tries to communicate.
I find that adorable even though I shouldn't...
I avert my eyes, hoping it will calm my pounding heart. "I'm not only a werewolf. I'm also a part incubus. A s*x demon, basically. We are very passionate lovers."
I have no clue why I just told her that. It's weird and embarrassing that I needed to mention that, but Katy is blushing brighter now. Her eyes are bigger than saucers, and that, weirdly enough, makes me smile inside.
The fact that my mate is so shy and innocent makes me feel a bit drunk. The sudden urge to take her to my bed, claim her and see where else I can make her blush hits me.
My c**k is already stiff, but I quickly recover once I realize I'm letting the mate bond get to me.
Bad Sky. Mating with a human is out of the f*****g question. How could you ever consider that?!
"Oh boy..." Katy exclaims. "M-maybe you should turn around?"
"What? Why?" I glare at her and then follow her gaze, realizing she is staring at the steely length between my legs. Ah. So that's why. I sigh. "I'm going to take a shower. Will you be fine finding your way home?"
"Home?" Katy asks. "B-but I was hired to cook for you... then again..." she grimaces and blinks repeatedly. "I think I need a drink after all of this. My head is spinning with a billion questions."
"Such as?"
Her beautiful green eyes meet mine. "What happens now?"
I snort. "Well, I will reject you, of course," those words are easier to say than do when my heart disagrees with this decision. So I quickly add, "I can do that after I've showered."
"Oh..." Katy peers up at me. "Is it hard to reject someone? Do you need to prepare a speech in the shower or something? Maybe a spell? Sorry for asking... I'm just confused as to why you won't do it now."
"Yes, that is the reason why I need time." I'm a lying piece of s**t. I should reject Katy right now, but I lack the balls.
I'm arguing with myself about whether or not to reject her. Like, I should since the elders would never accept us being together, and Katy can't even feel the mate bond! Though, perhaps she will after I've claimed her? Wait! Why am I even considering that?!
Gah!
I'm such a mess.
"Okay... well... then it makes sense you might need some time to think about it then," Katy smiles sweetly.
I narrow my eyes, glaring down at her. "You aren't bothered by my decision to reject you?"
"No?" Katy looks surprised. "Believe it or not, I'm not a total i***t. I know that I'm not much to look at, and I also don't have much to offer."
I raise an eyebrow, scanning her rosy cheeks and kind eyes. There is nothing wrong with how Katy looks, and I sigh heavily. "Sounds to me like you have terrible self-confidence."
There is a shy giggle. "I would prefer to call it self-awareness. I've never been hot, and I will never be, and the fact that you're younger than me..." Katy winces at her own words. "Well... it must be a shock that your old babysitter is your mate."
"Age is not an issue." Why am I telling her that? She just offered me an easy way out, and I'm defending her? f*****g hell. I'm swimming in deeper waters than I thought...
"How about me being a virgin then?" Katy asks.
I fight the urge to roll my eyes. "And why would that be an issue?"
She shrugs. "Guys get weird when I tell them that I'm a virgin. Books and movies give you the impression it would be the other way around, but that's not the case. It doesn't raise my value; instead, guys become unwilling to sleep with me. They seem to think something must be wrong with me for me to be a virgin."
Anger bubbles up within me. "Nothing is wrong with you," then, because I'm curious, I ask, "Is there a reason why you haven't slept with anyone, though? Like a real reason?"
"Acne," she says like she is embarrassed. "I suffered from that for a long time, and guys barely asked me out. Those who did freaked out when they saw me without makeup."
I'm boiling now. It must be due to the mate bond, but I want to punch the guys who left her for some acne. "If your appearance meant that much to them, they weren't worth it, to begin with."
"Agreed," her smile is wide and adorable. "But I must say that I'm happy not to suffer from acne problems anymore. Accutane helped me."
"Is that a sort of medication?"
"Yeah."
"I see," I give her a brief smile.
It seems to surprise Katy. Her lips part, and she stares at me as if she never expected a smile out of me. To be honest, I rarely smile, but the mate bond is definitely getting to me.
I turn the other way. "Well, I'm going to wash away the blood from my body and find some clothes."
"Right..."
An awkward silence falls. Katy doesn't seem sure what to say, and I don't want her to feel uncomfortable. It's a pain in the ass, but the mate bond is making me care about her.
It's so troublesome...
I run my hand through my hair. "Name your poison."
"Excuse me?"
"What is your signature drink?"
"Frozen strawberry daiquiri!" Katy exclaims.
"Do you like liquid sugar?"
"Mhm, it's delicious!"
My lips twitch. Katy is a girly girl, but I like that and won't judge her for enjoying sweet drinks.
"Alright, alright... frozen strawberry daiquiri, huh? Well. I have a big alcohol cabinet in the kitchen. Why don't you make two of those drinks for us? I will join you once I'm decent, and we will sort this out."
Katy's face lights up. "Sounds good!"
The chirpy tone of her voice sets my heart on fire, and I fight every instinct telling me to hug her. Gah!
The mate bond is a pain in the ass. Katy has talked to me for less than an hour, and I'm already acting crazy around her. I have to reject her soon... before I go completely insane.
I stalk toward the hallway. "I won't shower for too long," I tell her even though a long shower is just what I need right now.
