Chapter 3

2169 Words
Katy I'm shaken. I've seen more of Sky Howler than what can be considered normal, and I've concluded that he is the single hottest man I've ever seen. It doesn't matter that he is twenty-two and too young for me. That guy is SEXY with capitalized letters! But geez, I would never say that out loud. Never. Not me. Uh-uh. Dirty words just don't belong in my vocabulary. I'm not that kind of girl. If a guy like Sky asked me out at the bar, I would probably suffer a heart attack from just having him flirting with me. Beautiful people make me nervous. Not going to lie. My heart is still pounding from seeing Sky naked, and I nervously take another gulp from my frozen strawberry daiquiri. I've mixed drinks for us both, and now I'm waiting for Sky to come in here to reject me. I still can't believe supernatural creatures are real and that I happen to be Sky's mate. He must be so disappointed that I'm a human. It hurts a little, but it is no surprise he wishes to get rid of me. My stomach churns, and I lift my eyes when I hear the bathroom door open. Sky waltzes into the kitchen with a white towel in his hair and boxer briefs that do nothing to hide his amazing physique. Holy s**t. Is this man even real?! I knew Sky was ripped from earlier but without the blood? Even if I should, I can't stop looking at his abs! "Did you start without me?" My eyes lift to his face. "Excuse me?" I sound so dumb, but I honestly didn't hear anything he said. Sky frowns and grumpily nods at my drink. "Drinking." My cheeks heat up. "Oh, yeah... I hope you don't mind? I just...today has been a lot for me, so I needed this," I laugh nervously. "But I made a drink for you too. It's right here." He looks at the frozen strawberry daiquiri, and I swoon when his lips do the faintest little twitch. "Thank you." Sky takes a seat by the kitchen bar table with me. It's made of stone, and we sit on high chairs facing each other. I know it's not a date, but it feels like it, which must be my imagination. This man doesn't want me. I clear my throat and stir the red drink with my straw. "So... you were going to reject me, right?" Sky is eyeing me while sucking on his straw. His eyes are intense and dark. They seem to take a different color depending on the light. Brown. Green. It's hard to tell, so I will call them hazel. "I definitely should. My pack doesn't allow the Alpha to mate with a human. The elders like to keep the bloodline clean, and if I mated with you, it could end badly for the both of us." I freeze in my seat, nearly not believing what I'm hearing. "Well... that doesn't sound good. You should definitely reject me!" "No shit." He breathes a laugh, and his eyelashes flicker as he meets my gaze with a hard-to-read expression. "I might be the Alpha, but the elders have too much control. If I mated with you, marked you, and you got pregnant, they might even take the baby." My heart drums against my ribcage. "Why are you telling me this if you're planning to reject me?" "Because..." he scowls and looks angry, not at me, but at the entire world. His thick eyebrows are turned downwards. "It's not like I haven't considered marking you... but I want an heir. And while keeping a mate a secret is possible, I'm not sure if a baby could be hidden from the pack." A bitter laugh leaves my lips. "No offense, Sky, but you haven't even asked for my opinion on all this, and I can say right now that you and I aren't happening." Silence falls. I lift my chin to meet Sky's large, surprised eyes, and my cheeks burn when I realize I've rendered him speechless by rejecting him. He didn't expect that, of course, he didn't—he is out of my league! It doesn't make sense for me not to want him, but I have a good reason. "You're beautiful, Sky. Gorgeous even. You're probably a good Alpha too, but you're right: a baby should not be kept a secret, and you lost my interest when you mentioned that part. I want children too, but I want them to grow up in a safe environment. Not with a werewolf pack wanting them all dead. That's where I draw the line." Sky continues to stare at me, but then he smirks. It's dark and wicked, and shudders creep up my spine. His eyes are even more intense now. It's like I've somehow fed his interest in me. "Determined and brave when it matters, huh?" I gulp. "That's right." The corner of his mouth quirks up higher. "Interesting. When you started talking, I didn't think there was more to you than nervous rambling and jittery nerves." My heart thuds faster, yet I manage to speak. "That's a very rude assumption to make—of course, there is more to me than that. Every person you meet has a story; perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to judge people without knowing them." To my surprise, Sky laughs. It warms his face, and suddenly, he doesn't look so scary anymore. Huge and larger-than-life, sure, but his eyes have a newfound fondness. I don't like it. Why? Because it gives me butterflies when I know we are wrong for each other. "You're right. Being judgemental is definitely a flaw of mine, but no one has dared to point that out before. It's a shame that you're a human," Sky says. "You seem like an interesting person to get to know." I fold my hands on the table and stare down at them, unable to meet Sky's eyes because it makes me feel things I shouldn't. I'm not used to men looking at me like they want me. And Sky does that, which is confusing. My pulse ticks against my neck, and I squirm in my chair, not sure how to handle the attention I'm given. "I'm not that special..." I say in a low tone. "But perhaps you find me interesting because I'm not your pack member." "What do you mean?" "Well..." I reach out for my glass. It's empty, so Sky bends down and picks up a bottle of whiskey from a cabinet inbuilt into the table. He fills a clean glass for me while I try to find the missing words in my head. When I hesitate to speak, Sky smiles at me. "Go on, explain what you mean." The attention he gives me is nothing short of frightening. Yet I open my mouth to talk. "When I was reading those werewolf stories online, it seemed like the pack members didn't dare to speak their minds to their Alpha werewolf. And then the guy always fell for the toxic, angry little girl who spoke her mind to him..." Sky snorts and pushes the drink over to me. "And that toxic, angry little girl is you, I take it?" I shrug with a grimace. "I don't know... maybe? I wouldn't say I match their personality, though. Those girls were always described as strong, but in my opinion, most of them were obnoxious." "Obnoxious?" Sky downs some whisky. I take a sip, decide I like it, and drink a good amount until I feel warmer in my clothes. Talking feels easier now. "Yes, because... those girls were angry at the Alpha for no reason. It was like reading a parody. The Alpha would do something, and the girl would be like, 'how dare you!' Then they fought and had hate s*x with each other." Sky hides a smile behind his glass. "Yet you still read those books." "I did!" I admit and laugh while Sky fills up another glass for me. I'm bad at handling alcohol, but who cares. "Those books are usually well-written and addicting, okay? It's a love-hate relationship. And I love the mate bond!" "Really?" Sky looks at me in disbelief. "Yes!" I'm feeling all sparkly and dreamy thinking about it. "But in many stories I've read, the girl rejects the Alpha, and then her second-chance mate is some other nicer Alpha." Amusement crosses Sky's features. "Are you saying there is a big chance you would reject me?" "No, because you're already rejecting me, remember?" The alcohol is making me much braver. "Your elders don't allow romance between us, and... you don't like humans either, do you?" Sky looks as if I've slapped him. He almost seems ashamed to admit what I already know, "No, I don't really like humans." "Mind if I ask why?" That question makes him pause and study my face in silence. Emotions that I don't understand are glimmering in his beautiful hazel eyes. I'm fascinated by their color. "I..." Sky swallows. "I've always deemed humans weak..." I laugh and drink a bit more. "That's probably true if you compare us to werewolves." He arches an eyebrow. "You're not offended?" "By being hit with the truth?" I show him my teeth in a shy smile and shake my head at him. "No, not really." More amusement flashes over his face. "Are you always this easygoing? "No, I'm usually too shy to speak... but this is some good whisky." He laughs. "It's been enchanted and designed to get werewolves drunk, so maybe you've had enough." Sky takes my whisky glass away from me and drinks it. I glare at him, insulted that my alcohol was confiscated by the kid I used to babysit. But Sky doesn't seem sorry. His expression is amused. "Are you angry that I took your glass?" "A little," I admit. "But I will get over it... eventually." He laughs, and I hate that everything inside of me flutters. I should be mad at him—not fall for his pretty boy face. He has a dangerous charm, and I don't want to be a victim. I bet he has broken many hearts. "So, Katy..." I shudder when my name rolls off his tongue, and Sky smirks as if knowing exactly what sort of power he has over me. "What is your taste in men like?" Despite the alcohol, I blush. "W-why the sudden interest?" He shrugs. "Just curious." "Oh, you know... I want what every other woman wants." "I hardly think all women have the same taste, but that's not the point... I want to hear what you're looking for in a man." "Appearance or personality?" "Appearance." "I want someone tall, dark, and handsome." What I said is a generic answer. Yet an amazed yet hesitant smile curls Sky's lips. "Did you... did you just describe me?" I laugh. "Really? You made that about you?" He laughs with me. "Well, yeah?" "You're not that tall." He repeatedly blinks at me. "Are you serious right now? I'm pretty goddamn tall. Most demons are." "But you aren't scary tall." There is an amused snort. "Get up from your damn chair, and let me prove you wrong." I slip down from the chair and lift my chin to face Sky, and then I widen my eyes when I realize my eyes aren't at n****e height. Shock ripples through me, and Sky smirks. "I dwarf you, shortie." My cheeks redden. "I guess you do." He steps forward, and I instinctively back up, but he grabs my wrist to move my hand to his hard chest. His skin is warm, and my heart pounds faster and faster until it feels like I might pass out. "So, do I pass?" Sky asks in a low, teasing tone. "Would you say yes if I asked you out, Katy?" I crane my neck to meet his amused face. He knows damn well that he looks beautiful and that no single woman with red blood in their veins would easily turn him down. And that confidence makes me grow bitter. "Are you playing mind games with me, Sky?" "No," comes his reply, and I exhale when his hand travels to my face. He tips up my chin and dips down slightly. The height difference is awkward, yet I'm already drowning in his eyes. I'm overthrown by his beauty, and my breathing is shallow as I wait for him to speak. "I'm not playing any mind games with you at all, Katy." My blood is boiling by now, and I whisper, "Then what are you doing?" "About to make a major mistake." With that, I'm hauled off the ground. My arms loop around Sky's thick neck. He is large, big, and sexy. I shock us both by kissing him first. For a brief moment, his entire body goes tense, but then he pushes back and controls my tongue with his. It's a match made in heaven.
