Nova
Darkness envelops me again, and I feel I am alone. Even the voice has stopped speaking, and my heart aches to hear it again. Why am I trapped in this place? What have I done to deserve it?
‘Open your eyes,’ The voice echoes, and I don’t know where it’s coming from.
‘They are awake,’ I argue. ‘But all I see is nothing.’
Through the gloom, a set of silver orbs float towards me until I notice they are eyes, his eyes. I reach to them, and a hand reaches back. ‘Come with me, Nova,’ His smooth voice says to me, and I am pulled to my feet and led toward the light.
“Luna, Luna, she’s awake,” An excited voice yells as my eyes open.
I am lying on my back, staring at the ceiling. The incessant beeping from the machines surrounding the bed makes me cringe as I try to move or sit up.
An older woman comes into my view, “Raise the bed, Kelsey," she says.
I jump slightly when the bed begins to move, and the bed raises me into an upright position.
“Caspar wasn’t kidding when he said you have beautiful green eyes,” The woman smiles and reaches toward me.
I flinch away, and her smile falters as she pulls her hand back. “Caspar?” I ask. The name sounds familiar to me.
“Caspar, my son,” She chuckles dryly, “Your mate.”
My eyes narrow at her, “Mate?”
“Oh, you poor dear,” The woman sighs and looks at another woman I notice beside the bed.
My eyes look at her distended belly for a long moment. She touches it, “I’m Kelsey, a nurse,” she says nervously.
I flick my eyes to the other woman.
“I’m Kristina, Caspar’s mother,” she grins. “Do you know who you are?”
I shake my head, “No.”
‘Nova,’ the voice echoes.
“I think I am Nova,” I reply.
A man in a white robe walks into the room, and I scream as the room fades into another.
“Make sure the wench isn’t knocked up, Howard,” Master grumbles.
The man in the white coat rolls his eyes, “Maybe you should stop screwing her, Bram.”
“Don’t tell me my business, Howard, and check her out,” Master growls and steps out of the room.
I am sitting nearly naked on a cold metal table. Ellen is beside me, reading a magazine. She glares at me, “Be a good little cow and let the nice man examine you.”
I shake my head as the man in the white coat forces me to lie back. He spreads my legs painfully apart and puts him in stirrups. I start to cry as I feel his hand down there.
“Shut up,” Ellen swats me.
I black out and come too as I hear Master screaming at the man in the white coat.
“Get rid of it, Howard. I don’t want her to have any whelps,” Master snarls.
“I am not qualified for that procedure,” The man in the white coat argues.
“Then find someone who is,” Master yells. “The sooner it’s done, the sooner I can get her back to work.”
The man in the white coat nods, “I’ll call Kevin.”
“Who the f**k is Kevin?” Master snarls.
“My friend,” The man in the white coat responds.
“Nova,” The man in the white coat tries to touch me, and I scream again.
“No,” I start to cry. “Don’t take my baby."
He freezes with a frown on his face. I must admit he looks quite different, “I am not going to hurt you. I am Dr. Holman, and I need to examine you.”
I shake my head as tears stream down my cheeks.
“Perhaps you should give her a few moments, Lewis,” the older woman, Kristina, says.
“I need to examine her, Luna,” The man in the white coat argues.
“I know,” She touches his shoulder. “A minute?”
He sighs, “Yes, Luna,” He nods and exits the room.
Kristina smiles at me and approaches. I tense as she touches my hand, “It’s going to be alright, Nova. You are safe here. Dr. Holman is an excellent doctor. I can assure you. I have known him for many years.”
I open my eyes to Ellen hovering over me. She pulls her face into a grin showing off her s ugly teeth.
“Bram, she’s awake,” She shouts whiles staring at me. “We got rid of your whelp,” She sneers.
“Whelp?” I mutter.
“Baby, thing, whatever,” Ellen weaves her hands.
“Great,” Master steps into view. “We have orders waiting for you at home.” His eyes flick to Ellen, “Get her dressed and into the car, Elle.”
“Nova,” Kristina snaps her fingers in front of my face, and I flinch. “Where did you go, honey?”
“I didn’t go anywhere,” I look around. “I- “I pause. “I saw others.”
“Flashbacks?” She asks.
I shrug, “I don’t know.”
“You mumbled a lot in your unconscious state,” She sighs. “Can Dr. Holman come back to examine you?”
I shake my head.
“I will be right here next to you,” She squeezes my hand. “I swear he will not hurt you.”
A stray tear slides down my cheek, “Okay,” I whisper.
She lets go of me and pokes her head out the door, “Lewis, you can come back now.”
The man in the white coat steps into the room. I tense up as he approaches me, “Hello, Nova, I am Lewis.” He smiles, and I am momentarily comforted. I yelp when his cold hands touch my skin, “I’m sorry.”
I close my eyes as he speaks to Kristina.
“Her physical injuries are healed,” Lewis says. “It’s her mental ones that we have to keep an eye on.”
“She seems to have gone through a lot, Lewis,” Kristina says sadly.
“I believe that too, Luna,” Lewis responds.
I open my eyes as he finishes touching me. He writes something down.
He smiles at me, “Everything appears to be alright, Nova.”
“Where am I?” I ask.
“You are in Silverstar Springs Pack,” Kristina responds. “You are my son’s mate. We have waited a long time for you.”
“Pack?” I look at her. “What is a pack?”
“Pack, we werewolves live in packs,” She huffs.
“I have to go check on the other patients now,” Lewis tells her.
“Call my son and tell him Nova is awake,” Kristina instructs him.
Lewis nods, “Yes, Luna.” He grins at me before exiting the room.
“Lewis is a human and can’t mind link,” Kristina chuckles.
I look at her with confusion. Werewolves, pack, mate; these are all strange words to me. “We aren’t human?”
“No, dear, don’t you know what you are?” Kristina pulls up a chair beside the bed.
“I barely know who I am,” I mention.
“Right,” Kristina sighs.
“Luna,” the pregnant one steps back into the room pushing a tray, and I can smell food, “Dr. Holman said we should try letting her eat.
“Oh, good, Kelsey,” Kristina motions her forward.
“Why does she call you Luna?” I wonder.
“I am the Luna of this pack,” She explains. Seeing my look of confusion, she continues, “The Luna is the Alpha’s mate.
The Alpha is the leader of the pack.”
I sit and listen to her, still utterly confused.
“My mate, Avery, was the Alpha of this pack. My son, your mate, is now the Alpha,” she tells me. “So, technically, that makes you the Luna.”
I narrow my eyes at her.
“Oh, I can’t wait until you are well enough to plan your ceremony,” Kristina giggles. “You would look beautiful in a long silver gown. And pups,” She laughs. “I can’t wait till you and Caspar have pups.”
I listen as she prattles on about things I know nothing about.
“I already have one grandson, but one is never enough,” Kristina says.
“My younger son Issak already met his mate. Fiona is lovely, and they have a two-year-old son, Noah. But you will have the next Alpha of this pack.”
“Mom,” His smooth voice says from outside the room, “She isn’t ready to be thinking about pups,” He steps into the room. I admire his handsome face. He is dressed in black pants with a black jacket over a white shirt.
“I was just daydreaming, Caspar,” Kristina approaches him.
“You are going to scare her,” Caspar laughs and looks at me.
‘Mate,’ The voice calls out.
“I’ll go and see what Ava is doing,” Kristina touches his shoulder and grins at me, “I’ll talk to you later.”
I nod as she exits the room.
Caspar slowly approaches the bed and then sits in the chair beside it. He touches my arm, and tingles spread through my body, making me jump. “It’s okay.”
I settle as he strokes my arm. The tingles calm me as the voice hums deep within my mind.
“Do you know who I am?” He asks with a soft smile on his face.
I stare at him for a moment taking in his beauty, “Mate,” I mutter.
