Soon after that, Mr Nik pulls up to pick Ruth up from the university. Lucy insists on going with her, and Ruth has to work hard to find a good excuse not to let her see her place. She doesn't feel she is ready to have a girl she has just met know everything about her life, especially as she isn't in an exactly comfortable position at the moment.

She and the old man say very little during the entire ride home.

Ruth is once again worrying about her life. The questions from her friend makes her feel the condition she is living in isn't right.

She is completely at Adam's mercy, and she feels he would be capable of doing anything to her whenever he wished, because he is giving her too much help. True, she works for the money, but the amount he pays for her tuition fees and making sure she has everything she needs, no maid, or whatever she is called now, has ever gotten that much in living history.

She appreciates his kindness while it lasts, but she can't help feeling like she is walking on a narrow pole set high over a body of water; a misstep and she will find herself tumbling into the water with no way of getting out.

She hates feeling like this.

She can sense that Adam is attracted to her, but he hasn't done anything that would make her uncomfortable yet, so she tries to pretend she doesn't know anything.

A sudden helplessness like she has never felt before overwhelms her. She wishes she was not herself but someone, anyone, else.

Apart from Adam there's also Brian. He gives her even worse discomfort than Adam, especially after the last encounter she had with him. He had looked at her in a very strange way as he talked about having something to confess to her.

She has no clue what he wanted to confess, because he had been interrupted by Mr Nik, who had come to ask for her to go inside. Whatever it is that he wants to say, she is not sure she wants to hear it because she has a feeling it is not something she is going to like.

When she gets home, she gets out of the car, then pauses in surprise as she sees the gorgeous man she had seen at school get in his car with those same bodyguards, Adam standing by to watch the car leave.

She had to arrive when he was just leaving. Ruth feels her heart jump excitedly.

Is the man friends with Adam? If so, the chances of seducing him have risen a little bit more.

She has something to set a smile to her glum face now.
