THALIA
The room was filled with silent snoring which was coming from Jace.
I didn’t fall asleep. I couldn’t.
I needed to stay awake.
Freya and I needed to leave. We need to make sure they don’t know.
I knew Freya wanted to meet a guy, but we slept with werewolves.
Hell, I’m mated to one.
I slowly move my legs out of the covers and sit up, completely naked. My body feels sore after the s*x we had. I looked over my shoulder to look at Jace. My heart flutters at the sight of him, and he is so handsome.
I don’t want to leave, but I have to.
I don’t want anyone being killed, not my mate. I don’t want anyone to sacrifice anything for me. I don’t deserve it. I’m not special.
I’m just a Fae, trying to live a life she wants but three horrible men wish to have me. They want me for my power. They want me to be something I am not.
I can’t do that, not to Jace.
Suddenly, I felt wet on my cheeks, and I moved my hand to touch and realized that I was crying.
This is probably the first time I have ever thought about myself. I am constantly thinking about Freya and everyone else's safety, like Rosa, the people who have helped us. I never stopped to think about what we both need or want, but with three horrible Fae Lords after us, what the hell am I supposed to do?
I move out of the bed and head into the bathroom, grabbing my clothes and putting them on. I placed fresh ones out earlier in the bathroom, ready to leave. I dress quickly and remove last night’s makeup from my face. I headed back into the room as quietly as possible. I place my hair in a high ponytail.
I placed my bag in the office area, and I told the man who owns the motel that I would leave in the morning. I thought I would be getting my bags not having s*x with my mate, but hey, I’m not going to complain as it was scorching s*x we had.
I grab the dress, panties, and heels. I looked over at the bed once more to see my mate one last time. I know I have to do this. If we stay, we will put everyone in danger, but if we leave, at least they will all be safe and have a chance.
I open the door and leave, gently closing the door behind me without making a sound.
I headed to the office to pick up my bag, which, lucky for me, the man had left the key under the mat.
I walked in and grabbed my bag. I looked to see that Freya’s bag was still there.
I quickly grabbed both bags and headed out of the office, locking the door behind me and placing the key back where I found it.
Suddenly, a taxi pulls up with a teary-eyed Freya. She didn’t say anything to me. The driver places both bags in the boot while I climb in the back and sit next to her. She stares out the window.
The taxi driver climbs back in and leaves the motel.
I turned to look at the motel as we left. I leaned back on the seat and closed my eyes. By the time Jace wakes up, we will be long gone.
Well, hopefully.
I could feel Freya’s sadness sweep in, and I turned to look at her. I place my hand in hers and squeeze it. I know she is hurting, we wanted to stay longer, but it would have been a blood war if they found us.
We are both in leggings, sneakers with a t-shirt covered with an oversized hoodie. She gently squeezes my hand but still doesn’t look towards me. I look at her reflection, she has no makeup on, and her hair is in a braid.
The taxi driver continues down the highway to head to the following location. We stop at a train station and then three buses away, five states over from here. We will stay there for a week and then there is a plane ride to somewhere we have never been.
Nikki is helping us, she is one of the people who has been helping us move around, but her mate has no clue who we are. Her mate is a bear shifter, and they live in the middle of nowhere.
After what felt like hours of silence, the taxi driver stopped at the train station.
Climbing out of the taxi, the driver places our bags next to us, and I pay him for the fare.
He nodded to us, saying his goodbyes even though we never spoke to him.
We walked through the train station and got our tickets. We headed to the platform and sat down.
“He was my mate,” Freya says quietly.
I look at her, s**t.
She doesn’t look at me, but a tear escapes the corner of her eye, “I didn’t want to leave him. How am I going to live without him,” she says in a whisper.
I know exactly how she feels, but I'm pretty good at hiding my emotions from everyone.
I cleared my throat so my voice didn’t give anything away, “We will be back, Freya,” I said to her and turned to face her. I placed my hand on her arm to make her turn to look at me.
Freya looks at me, her eyes all bloodshot and red. “We will, but we need to get out of here for a few months, and then we will come back as long as...” I say, but she cuts me off, “As long as they are not following us,” she says quietly.
I look at my best friend and give her a small smile, “I'm sorry, Freya,” I say.
Freya wipes the tears away with the sleeve of her hoodie, “Why are you sorry?” She says, “They are after both of us, and we need to make sure we are safe, but Thalia,” she says, she turns to look at me, “Why not stay with the werewolves? They can protect us; they may be able to help,” she says.
I shook my head, “We can’t ask them to do that, Freya,” I said to her, “There are many lives in a pack, there would be bloodshed if they got involved. The twins want us because of what we can do, their father only found out because of...” but I cut myself off and closed my eyes.
Our mothers were trying to save us, but the king’s mistress got involved. Everything was set for us to leave as a family, but the mistress had to spy on us to find out why they would move two girls away from the realm.
She immediately went to the king and told him what she had found. Our fathers were killed while our mothers led us away and sent us through a portal.
The mad king did have a queen, but she died during a war when a dragon killed her. We were all devastated, but the mad king was never cruel before the queen died. He was a kind and gentle soul, but when she passed, all he wanted was powerful people left in his kingdom. They forced my mother to give up my older sister, Rose, who the mad king made marry, his oldest son. He was a monster, and my sister never saw our family again.
“Thalia,” Freya calls me, bringing me back to her.
I look at her and give her a small smile, “The train is coming,” she says as she places her hand in mine.
She knows how hard it is for me to talk about all of this, but we need to keep moving.
As the train pulls into the station and comes to a complete stop, we climb aboard and take our seats.
Freya sits in front of me with our bags at the side of us.
The driver comes around and checks our tickets.
I lean back and look at Freya, but she looks out the window and away from me.
I can’t help but close my eyes; an image of Jace comes into my head.
I need to try to sleep, but somehow, all I want to do is cry for my mate.
I can’t tell Freya that Jace is my mate. She would make me go back, but thinking about it, maybe she should go back to the werewolves. They would be able to help her and keep her safe. I know they can’t save us both, and I would do anything for my best friend to be happy, even if it meant I sacrificed my life for her.
