Becoming Royal — 4

The tension among us is soon broken by the loud claps from the king’s brother Julian and I pull my hands successfully out of their tight holds. What’s this supposed to mean? Mate, what? “This is a very interesting family twist.” Julian comments as he approaches his brother. He moves to sit on the supposed Luna or Queen’s chair and I shift my gaze to Adrian who seems to be sending a death glare his half-brother’s way. “Lucas, your cousins are having so much fun.” He tells his son who in turn smirks and bury his gaze on mine. I hate that they are all handsome. I also still think Lucas and his father should stop flaunting their hatred in front of the people. This is becoming disgusting, by the way my heart is still racing but I can’t figure out who it is raising for. Is it Mateo? Or Adrian? The two brothers stare at each other and Adrian decides to turn away. “Adrian, wait.” I stop him and he waits. “That was a mistake.” He replies. What’s a mistake? “What do you mean?” I ask and he walks away without saying a word. What happens next? Can someone explain what’s going on to me? If I was sent back in time why isn’t there a handbook for me to follow? Why doesn’t the history book tell us they aren’t humans? If they aren’t humans, what are they? “Selena…” I murmur and everyone parts ways for me to pass as the King requests I come forward. Holding my hands, I walk through the parted ways and ascend the throne and Kaia smirks. “This is…” “Wait!” I cut the king off mid-way and everywhere becomes noisy as the people begin mumble to each other. “You are not meant to cut your King off.” Lucas says and I feel my palm sting from the slight cut I just gave my palm with my nails. “I am sorry, your majesty.” I apologize and the people begin to retreat. ‘I will explain to you, Olivia or should I call you the name of the body you possess?’ This time, I am sure this voice is sounding in my head… “Tell me where they are going and explain what all of this means. I keep looking like an outcast here because I am actually one.” I reply and Mateo’s brothers turn to look at me. “Calvin and Ace, move to the banquet hall to coordinate the people.” The king orders and I feel ignored as he still hasn’t said anything concerning my apology. Lucas and his father, Julian seem to have more dramas to exhibit as they still haven’t moved an inch and a woman who seems to be in her mid-forties, steps out of some curtain behind the king’s chair. She moves to take my hand and her smile softens my tensions a bit. “Is she the one?” She asks and the King nods. “You are my Mateo’s mate, aren’t you?” She asks and I look at her red eyes. Weird eyes color. “Sister-in-law, your son seems to have the same mate as your step-son. Even the moon goddess loves some drama.” Julian replies and she lets go off my hand. “Can my mother be brought in?” I ask and the queen nods. “You can’t leave your husband on the night he finds you. It is one of the kingdom rules. You are yet to be called his wife, but you are to stay in a room close to your husband’s which is to protect you from other unmated males.” She explains and I nibble on my bottom lip. “Your inauguration happens thirty one days after he finds you. in other words, you will be inaugurated in thirty one days and in those days you are meant to familiarize with the royal rules.” Another lady who seems to be in the queen’s league explains further. Is Lyra’s mother this carefree? Who leaves her daughter on a day like this? Why should I be looking for a mother? I do not have one. “Mateo, take her with you. “ The King orders and I step back involuntarily as Mateo approaches me. “Y-y-ou do not have to hold my hands, I-I-I- will walk behind you.” I hate myself for stuttering. “I wasn’t planning on holding your hands anyway.” He replies and give out a fake smile to his parents and the rest of the royal family present. We walk in the midst of guards and I feel my heart skip beats when I catch a sniff of blood. “Are you all vampires? Do you drink blood?” I ask and he continues walking like he has no ears. Am I being ignored? “Any plans on talking to me?” I ask and he stops walking. He turns to look at me and step back as he sends a death glare my way. “Can you be mute? I need to think.” He raises his voice and I nod repeatedly. “Is this how you speak to someone you called your mate few minutes ago?” “Who are you?” “What?” “You do not think I chose you because you are my mate, or do you think so?” He asks and I move my hand to my chest as he takes a hold of my hand. He drags me along with him and I just let him because I have no more strength to argue. All I need now is an understanding fellow who would explain what’s going on to me. “I really want to return.” I murmur and he finally let go of my hand after walking through a series of lamp lit hallways. He pushes a door open and I follow behind him. “You are meant to stay here, your maid would be let in.” He says and turn to walk way when I grasp his hand. “Mateo, do you remember me?” I ask and he brushes my hand off his arm roughly. “Let’s keep our distance dear mate.” He says and I feel my heart burn as he walks out and I notice Adrian through the opened door. “You got what you wished for already.” Adrian says as soon as Mateo is nowhere in sight. “What did I wish for?” I ask and he walks in further. “I am here to confirm who you are.” He says as he moves closer to me. “Are you a vampire?” I ask and he stops moving. “Your attention is required in the hall.” One of the princes says and Adrian glances at me before walking out. “Why aren’t you leaving?” I ask and he smiles. “Do you want me to leave?” He answers my question with a question. “Not if you have a nice attitude enough to explain what this whole kingdom is all about.” I reply and he nods as he moves to sit on the only bed in the room. “I am Maximus one of the princes, but not known to be one.” He starts and I slip from the wall to the floor. “So do you have a mate too?” I ask and he smiles. “I do. You will meet her soon. Any more questions?” He replies and I nod. “What does having a mate mean? What are you all if you are not humans? Is the King and his brother on good terms? Why did Adrian and Mateo call me mate at the same time? Who is the moon goddess? Am I some Luna to be? Who is my actual mate? What are you and does what you are make me what you are?” I stop when his expression seems unreadable. “Woah, that’s a lot of questions in a minute.” He comments more to himself than me and I groan. Is he going to answer or not? “Lyra, right?” He asks and I nod. “Can I trust you?” “Actually, trusting someone shouldn’t be based on a question. Of course I would tell you yes and what if I am not trust worthy?” “I feel like telling you all…” I murmur. “I heard that.” He replies. “Are you also blessed with an extreme sense of hearing from afar?’ “Every wolf has the ability to hear from afar.” He answers. They are wolves? Does that include Lyra? Am I going to transform into some animal tonight? “I would explain who the moon goddess is first. She is the supreme being who is in control of all affairs. A mate is a predestined partner to be who one wouldn’t meet until it is night the moon goddess have destined they would meet. We all aren’t humans, we shape shift. About my father and uncle, that is meant for me to say, you would figure out yourself as you continue to live here. I do not know who your actual mate is, but your mind knows which of them actually belongs to you. A bonus answer would be, get your heart prepared against heartbreak cause it is going to hurt so bad. Even if you tell yourself you do not want to feel it, you would eventually because it is beyond your control. Once your wolf is hurting, you would be hurting too. You have got heartbreakers as mates.” He tells me and I stare right at him. “Why weren’t you mentioned when the princes were being called?” I ask and he sighs. “I am an illegitimate child. It is sad, but it is the truth.” He replies and I mouth an ‘oh’ “Well, I am an outcast here. I slept last night as myself Olivia and here I am in my history books on the verge of becoming a queen.” I start and he grins. His grins begins to disappear slowly as he studies my expression and he stops laughing. “You look serious about this.” He acknowledges and I narrow my eyes at him. “It is because I am.” I reply and he stands. “You think you came from the future?” He asks and I nod. “Yes.” “You aren’t Lyra?” He asks to be sure and again I nod. “I am Olivia Haynes. A twenty nine year old editor of a large company.” I answer. “You look exactly like Lyra.” “I look nothing like her. I just think I am trapped in her body. Don’t tell anyone about this and thank you for answering all my questions. I hope to know your mate she must be as nice as you are. Do you have kids, you seem older than Mateo?” “No kids yet, my mate will be happy to meet you the moment I tell her about you. So what name do I call you?” He asks. “Lyra, until I figure out how to return to my actual place.” “Maybe I can help.” “You can?” “I will ask a question. Where were you last night?” The same question I have asked myself multiple times. “I remember sleeping in my bed last night.” I reply honestly and he goes silent for more than a minute before parting his lips. “I will take you to the pack witch. She will be able to tell you what’s wrong.” “Can we leave now?” I ask and he sighs. “No. At least not tonight; most of the unmated females are finding extremely difficult to control themselves and you wouldn’t be an exception if you step out. You seem weird as of now, not burning up. Have you heard a voice in your head?” “I think I did thrice, but is that normal?” “Yes, it is your wolf trying to make a connection with you. She must be silent and achy now that she is away from her mate she just found.” The moment the words comes out, I feel my body get weak and I lie on the floor involuntarily. My eyes twitch and I can sense Maximus moving close, but I can’t move. “What’s wrong?” His voice is laced with so much worry and I feel my body being raised from the floor. The door swings open and the pain in my body lessens as Mateo walks in. “Your mate would be super disappointed to find out you are about to mark your brother’s mate.” Mateo’s words might not be nice but his voice lessens the pain further as Maximus places me carefully on the floor. With my back rested against the wall, I shut my eyes. “You do not care about her. You know she shouldn’t have been left alone.” Maximus snaps and I open my eyes. “She is my mate and I can do whatever I want with her.” He replies as he moves to take my hand, but I push it away. Standing up with all of the strength left in me, I run past them and I begin to appreciate it more when no one is following behind me.
