-Elena- “I can’t stand being cooped up here like I’m in prison!” I yelled, surprised by the forcefulness of my voice. “It’s not safe out there!” my aunt shouted back, her hands pressed against her face as she rubbed it tiredly. “No, Aunt Jen, it’s not safe here!” I retorted, meeting her gaze with defiance. Her eyes widened slightly as she paused her rubbing. “Right where you’re standing is where I was nearly strangled to death.” Her eyes dropped, filled with sadness and guilt.
