As Ross settled into his new routines, especially at the school, and people got a chance to see what he was really like, some of them were emboldened to try to speak to him. This basically meant that some of the women tried to talk to him, because of the two thousand who lived in and around the village, only a handful of the men could speak even only a few words of English, whereas most of the women could say something, if they really wanted to. Ross welcomed the short conversations, since he understood that Craig needed more time to himself to get on with the writing and promotion of his books. He also wanted to get to know more of the villagers and this seemed an ideal way to him. There was a cleaner at the school called Joy who tried particularly hard to get his attention. Ross had no
