Gage POV:
I was standing behind Ember, waiting for Niko to shift back. He wasn’t showing any signs of it which didn’t surprise me. The only reason I had shifted back is because Ember was crying and pleading with us. I couldn’t stand to see her like this. She yelled at Niko that I was her mate. I knew to shift back to my wolf as soon as the words left her mouth. Niko howled alerting his pack that I was there. It was going to be a blood bath and I knew I was outnumbered. I had already called for backup, but it would take them at least 30 minutes to get here. The warriors that were sent as a distraction would be here in minutes but even then, Niko had the numbers on his side. I wasn’t too incredibly worried about it though; my pack lives for battles like this. We love to show our strength when the odds are against us. Ember was shaking and crying, trying to plead with Niko, but if he was listening to her before he damn sure wasn’t anymore. Not after she told him about us.
Niko made the first move, lunging at me trying to go for the kill right off the bat. Wrong move on his part; I figured he would do that. My wolf is fast, faster than average, and I was easily able to dodge him. A gorgeous white wolf jumped in front of him. It was amazing. I had never seen a wolf like this in my life. Solid white with light baby blue on her tail and paws. One eye was black, and one was blue, the wolf was on the small side, a lot smaller than me, but I knew that was
Ember.
I stepped up beside her to face Niko. The other wolves were fighting around us. Niko was frozen. He was surprised, like me, that Ember had shifted. She was growling low at him, and they weren’t moving. I knew she had mind linked with him. She turned and nuzzled into my side for a minute. I didn’t know what was being said, but I had a feeling it wasn’t any good.
Alpha Niko’s men stopped fighting and I ordered mine to do the same. Ember and Alpha Niko shifted back so I did the same, even though my wolf didn’t want to, he didn’t trust Niko or his men to not attack. Ember walked up to me, still crying, and gave me hug. I wrapped my arms tightly around her. I leaned down when I seen her trying to tip toe and kissed her. She whispered in my ear “I’ll love you forever” and turned to Niko’s men and shifted running back to her house.
I didn’t know what had just happened. I was trying to figure it out and my wolf wanted to run after her. I was fighting him to stay in control. Alpha Niko stepped forward and I focused my attention on him.
“You will never see Ember again. You will stay away from now on. The only reason I called off the fight was because Ember agreed to call off her relationship with you. I will not allow my daughter to mate with the enemy, especially YOU. If you try to get her, I will kill you. Ember is special and isn’t going anywhere.”
I was furious. He couldn’t kill me even if he wanted too. I wanted to rip his throat out right then, but I knew Ember would never forgive me. As Niko walked away, I gave him a warning, “You will not be able to keep us apart. You know this as well as I do. Our bond is stronger than the average. I will have my mate, and if I ever find out you have hurt her, I will make sure not a single person in your pack remains alive.” And I meant every word of it. Alpha Niko never stopped walking and never acknowledged me, but I knew he heard me. Once Alpha Niko was out of sight, I ordered my pack back home. I grabbed some sweats from the backseat of my truck and slipped them on before getting in. I couldn’t shake the bad feeling I had, and my wolf was telling me something was wrong. All I could do was call Ember. After several rings, her voicemail came on. I hung up not wanting to leave a message on there for her. I needed to hear her. I opted for a short text. Hey darlin’ are you okay? And honey I’ll love you forever too.
I couldn’t stop myself from thinking back to that moment. The way she said it and the look in her eyes. She looked sad, defeated even; like she really thought she would never see me again. The thought broke my heart and made my wolf cry. Did she really think I would just walk away now? And why would she make that deal with Niko in the first place? I could have taken him, easy. Does she doubt my ability to protect her? And Ember’s wolf… I had never seen anything like that before. She was stunning but I had a feeling there was more to her than I knew or anyone besides Niko knew. I let my mind wonder as I drove home. I would have to address the pack later and explain what all this was about. Ember still hadn’t responded by the time I got home, and it worried me. My wolf was on edge, and something told me Ember was in danger, even if she didn’t know it.
